>Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen called on the international community to defend democratic values by supporting the self-ruled island amid renewed threats from the Chinese regime.
FYI the ppl of Taiwan really really value their Democratic system:
From 1949 until around 1988 Chiang Kai Shek and the GMT party ruled with a mix of successfully overseeing a successful run of economic growth for the people.
The price was they endured a perpetual state of martial law, curfews, and govt officials of the mindset (right or wrong) that Communists from the mainland could have infiltrated anywhere anytime.
In 1988 the people there had their yellow vest moment (S. Koreans same year too, they leveraged media coverage of Olympics being held there then to raise notice worldwide.).
During that period of protest, an anecdote of their conviction: A business owner decided to immolate himself in his office in his chair behind his desk. The story goes that a journo, photographer was coming to interview him and instead took what ended up being a cover photo for whatever the mag. I have never seen this pic but if it's really out there I Imagine it's about on the level as Tianemen square tank man.
Anyway voter turnout in Taiwan is an outrageous number like 94%. Taiwanese that Live abroad fly back from wherever during election years to vote. That's what it means to them.
Kissenger was a dick for making the case that Chinese Communists were more deserving of a security council seat and that we should favor them at the expense of ROC
