In my opinion, the 'militias' you refer to are nothing more than an attempt to create a local political party. I have been to all kinds of meetings. Here is when I know they are full of shit: towards the end of the first gathering there is always someone that suggests there should be an official leadership of the group. They always put themselves up for consideration as leader of the group.
Here is what I do. I put myself up as leader. I argue against the proposed leader. The group falls apart. Why? Because the group was never about its stated purpose. It was always about giving one person, or a very few people, 'control' of this new group.
