It wasn’t perfect when it premiered last year— a little too long, a tiny bit confusing — but Rosie Kay’s MK Ultra was so rich in ideas, imagery and movement language that it was well worth the cost of repairs. Eighteen months later, a fresh edit of this dazzling multimedia exploration of the myths and realities of the CIA’s postwar brainwashing experiments has been back on the road.
The CIA’s MK Ultra programme was halted in 1973 but lived on in a mass of “Illuminati” conspiracy theories, chief of which (for Rosie Kay’s purposes) was the idea that the Disney Corporation was grooming child stars such as Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears, whose pop videos would transmit messages using a gallery of occult iconography — chessboard floors, eyes, butterflies, pyramids, birdcages (vintage episodes of The Prisoner and The Avengers will never seem the same).
This complex narrative is held together (just about) by snatches of voiceover by documentary-maker Adam Curtis, whose trademark chef’s salad of archive film clips is matched by Kay’s pick-and-mix movement vocabulary, an exhausting mash-up of twerking, jazzercise and street dance delivered with relentless panache by her seven dancers encased in Gary Card’s trippy catsuits. Carina Howard is touching and terrifying as the falling star at the heart of the piece. Lizzie Klotz, with her shiny bob and wide-eyed stare, perfectly catches the sanitised, cheerleader-ish sexuality of the pop routines, her smiley face entirely at odds with what her pelvis is up to.
Kay was glad of the opportunity to fine-tune her creation: “We demand too much of artists to get it right first time. It’s like trying to write a novel in eight weeks and then put it on stage immediately, win or lose.” The 2018 remix is a much tighter, more focused show. Ten minutes have been slashed from the running time and much of Curtis’s explanatory preamble has been cut, largely, Kay feels, because MK Ultra has itself given the issues fresh currency: “The world has changed so I don’t need to explain what the Illuminati are any more.”
This busy, brainy dancemaker’s next project will be a new, expanded version of her award-winning 5 Soldiers with twice as many dancers, including a bona fide, ballet-trained soldier, Alexander Smith, on secondment from the Welsh Cavalry. The supersized edition has an entirely different dynamic: “With five dancers you are struggling to make it look real; with 10 it looks like a real army unit. It looks fab: it’s like there’s a tank running towards you.”
Kay’s future plans also include a new BAME version of Romeo and Juliet for the Birmingham Hippodrome in May and, in the autumn, an abstract piece, Fantasia, about music, pleasure and the brain. Kay, a huge Paul Taylor fan, will be using a classically derived score, “things it’s politically incorrect to use in contemporary dance”, and designs that will ravish the eye in a synaesthetic overload: “I’m really anti-miserableness at the moment,” she says.

In time, Penn won Cooper over.

Before seeing the show it’s well worth reading the programme or our feature on the making of MK Ultra, both of which have excellent and extensive notes by Kay on the background to the work. They give useful context, but you don’t have to read up – the show itself is self-documenting with Panorama-style filmed interludes made and narrated by full-on television journalist Adam Curtis. MK Ultra was a CIA programme of experiments around mind control that ran from the 50s to the 1970s, and the documentaries feature much period film. But this dance show also features material on the ‘Illuminati’ – for those that don’t know, to quote Kay: “They are a supposed shadowy elite who control the media through messages in pop music, entertainment with the intent on somehow ruling the world, spreading a ‘New World Order’ agenda of state control.” Older folks (like me) aren’t so aware of the Illuminati concept, but the young seem to be and some of the filmed interludes are with teenagers talking about their perceptions around what they see, particularly pop videos and associated imagery.

Abstract
Scopolamine (hyoscine) is a naturally occurring alkaloid found in solonacea, the so-called "night shade" plants. Therapeutic applications of scopolamine are in ophthalmology to cause mydriasis and for the prevention of motion sickness, among others. It is known to induce hallucinogenic effects at a high dose. The N-butyl bromide derivative of scopolamine, available commercially as Buscopan, is commonly used as an antispasmotic. The possibility of forming scopolamine from N-butyl-scopolammonium bromide when burning cigarettes fortified with Buscopan was investigated based on a record of a prison inmate who claimed to experience hallucinations after smoking Buscopan. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry in electrospray ionization mode was used to monitor the formation of scopolamine. Various series of eight cigarettes spiked with 10 mg of N-butyl-scopolammonium bromide with and without filters and in different smoking modes were investigated. The smoke of the burning cigarettes, the ashes, and the filter were analyzed for the presence of scopolamine. Scopolamine was detected in all cases.
