Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg skipped opening arguments today for the first in her 25 years on the court.

Ginsburg underwent cancer treatment last month.

She is not even in Washington DC. She is in New York.

The Supreme Court says Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is missing arguments for the first time in more than 25 years as she recuperates from cancer surgery last month.

Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said Monday the 85-year-old Ginsburg is continuing to recuperate and work from home after doctors removed two cancerous growths from her left lung odn Dec. 21.

Ginsburg was discharged from a New York hospital on Dec. 25.

Ginsburg had two earlier cancer surgeries in 1999 and 2009 that did not cause her to miss court sessions. She also has broken ribs on at least two occasions.

US destroyer sails through disputed South China Sea as trade talks kick off in Beijing

A US Navy vessel, USS ‘McCampbell,’ has sailed past disputed islets of the South China Sea in a ‘freedom of navigation’ operation. In response, Beijing sent military ships and aircraft to warn it off, condemning the “provocation.”

The guided-missile destroyer sailed within 12 nautical miles of the Paracel Islands archipelago, the US Pacific fleet said on Monday. The operation was carried out to “to challenge excessive maritime claims,” according to the fleet’s spokeswoman Rachel McMarr.

The voyage of USS ‘McCampbell’ has triggered an angry reaction from Beijing. China’s Foreign Ministry accused the US of entering the waters of the Paracel Islands without permission, adding that it had lodged “stern representations” with Washington.

“We urge the United States to immediately cease this kind of provocation,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said, adding that China had sent military ships and aircraft to identify and warn off the rogue ship.

The troubled waters of the South China Sea are disputed by several nations of the region, namely Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, China and Taiwan – which Beijing sees as an integral part of the mainland.

China claims sovereignty over almost of all the waters, which are frequently visited by US military vessels. Washington insists that it has been exercising its “freedom of navigation” right.

The incident coincided with the start of high-level talks on trade between the US and China, which kicked off on Monday in Beijing. The negotiations, led by the deputy trade ministers of the two countries, are expected to go on for two days.

The talks have become the very first official contact on trade rivalry since early December, when US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping agreed to try and settle differences during the G20 summit in Argentina. Back then, the two leaders announced a 90-day truce on new tariffs, which is set to expire on March 1. The trade war between Washington and Beijing has been going on for nearly a year already, with the two countries slapping tariffs on $300 billion worth of each other’s goods.

Bolton updates White House message about US in Syria: Troops will remain until objectives are met and Turkey makes guarantees

In a tweet, President Trump said this was the plan all along

In Jerusalem, national security adviser John Bolton told reporters that U.S. troops will remain in Syria until the situation with ISIS is resolved and U.S. Kurdish allies are granted guarantees from Turkey. This represents a departure from previous Trump administration statements regarding an imminent departure from Syria.

What are the details?

"There are objectives that we want to accomplish that condition the withdrawal," Bolton said Sunday, according to Politico. "The timetable flows from the policy decisions that we need to implement."

On Monday, Bolton traveled to Turkey to negotiate regarding the government's treatment of the Kurdish people in Syria. One of the biggest questions regarding a rapid U.S. withdrawal from Syria concerns what happens to the United States' Kurdish allies after U.S. troops leave.

Turkey has had an ongoing conflict with the PKK, a Turkish militant group, within its own borders. Because of this, Turkey views all ethnic Kurds as terrorists and has been using the instability caused by the Syrian civil war to attack Kurdish positions outside of Turkey. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has promised to "descend on them [the Kurds] with more comprehensive and effective [strength]."

Bolton said a promise from Turkey that it would not attack the Kurds in Syria after U.S. forces left would be a condition of the withdrawal. A Kurdish leader told The Associated Press that his people were unclear on what the U.S. planned to do, and that they had asked for clarification.

"We don't think the Turks ought to undertake military action that's not fully coordinated with and agreed to by the United States, at a minimum so they don't endanger our troops," Bolton told reporters.

In an interview with Bloomberg that was published Monday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the U.S. campaign in Syria "hasn't changed one lick." He added that a "component of that is being altered, the reduction of the forces in Syria is being changed, but the mission set hasn't changed a bit."

Approximately 15 acid attacks per week in Britain, with 73% of them taking place in London

The United Kingdom’s surge of the previously unheard of phenomenon of acid attacks has seen an average of 15 a week over the past three years, with the vast majority taking place in the crime-struck capital.

There were 2,602 acid attacks in Britain between January 2015 and May 2018, according to government figures accessed by The Mirror.

Comparing that figure, the newspaper notes that between 2007 and 2011 there were just 100 such attacks, or just one a fortnight over the period.

The paper also reports instances of particular attacks that have taken place in recent years, some of which have child victims and even child perpetrators – one being as young as six years old.

Breitbart London has reported on the rising prominence of acid attacks in the United Kingdom and in London in particular, with the city being crowned the world acid attack capital in 2017, with incidents reaching “epidemic” levels, according to medics working on acid victim care.

While the attacks are often severely debilitating and leave victims with what are euphemistically called “life-changing injuries”, Britain saw its first prosecution for an acid attack killing in 2018. The victim, who had just come from the grave of her daughter, died 11 days later.

In another attack a three-year-old boy was splashed with acid during a “deliberate” attack which police attributed to “community violence”. Five were subsequently arrested, with the case soon going to court.
