Chicago Seized And Sold Nearly 50,000 Cars Over Tickets Since 2011, Sticking Owners With Debt

According to a WBEZ analysis of thousands of towing records and invoices, the city regularly pulls residents into a nexus of ticket-related debt and car seizures that is stunning in its scope.

In 2017 alone, Chicago booted more than 67,000 vehicles for unpaid tickets. In about a third of those cases, the driver couldn’t afford to remove the boot, and the vehicle was later towed to a city impound lot.

Of those 20,000 impounded cars, more than 8,000 ended up like Botello’s: They were sold off, with the owners receiving none of the sale proceeds. Instead, the city and its towing contractor pocketed millions of dollars, while residents were left with ticket debt.

All told, there have been nearly 50,000 of these sales since 2011.

The vast majority of cars bound in these tow-and-sell operations hail from low-income and minority communities on Chicago’s West and South Sides, where experts have said residents are already hard-pressed to pay for effective transportation.

White Weatherman Fired For MLK Racial Slur

A deeply religious meteorologist for a local NBC affiliate in Rochester, New York, was canned Monday for making an on-air racial slur.

The slur was about the iconic Martin Luther King, Jr.

WHEC’s Chief Meteorologist Jeremy Kappell referred to a park with an ice skating rink as “Martin Luther Coon King Park.”

Court Cites Colorado's 'Hostility' Against Christian Baker, Says Jack Phillips Can Sue for Religious Discrimination

Colorado cake artist Jack Phillips may proceed with his lawsuit against the state for its targeting of him over his Christian faith, a federal district court has ruled.

Friday's court order comes in response to Colorado's decision to come after Phillips for a second time after losing their original case against him in a June ruling by the US Supreme Court.

In this latest round, Colorado sued Phillips for refusing to bake a cake to celebrate a gender transition.

Church Protested Because Their Sign Reads ‘Bruce Jenner is Still a Man, the Bible is Still True’

Trinity Bible Presbyterian Church, outside a Northern California town named Weed, posted a phrase on its marquee sign that reads, “Bruce Jenner is still a man. Homosexuality is still sin. The culture may change. The Bible does not.”

Cue the outrage.

Not everyone in Siskiyou County was pleased with the sign. A local NBC affiliate reported on the incident and the ensuing protests,

Pulpit & Pen reached out to Pastor Hoke, who estimated the protestors at less than one-hundred when church began. He also alleges that instead of simply reporting the news, the local newspaper actually helped to organize the protest.

Hoke also clarified the biased-nature of the reporting as done by NBC, stating, “The NBC news guy asked me why I hated homosexuals. And then edited my response to make it sound like I was saying I thought it was offensive for people to say the sign was hateful. While I affirm that the sign is a clear declaration of truth and as such identifies sin, as sin and is a warning and call to repentance, I am not offended by those who hate the truth calling the truth hate. I was offended by the NBC news personality assuming my motives for putting up the sign were hatred.”
