Indiana Grocery Store Can't Process Food Stamp Payments Due To Govt. Shutdown

We warned last week what could happen if the government shutdown continues into February…

If people are getting this restless already, what will things look like when tens of millions of Americans are suddenly cut off from their primary source of food money?

Well, as Daisy Luther reports from her Organic Prepper blo g, it's starting early. As we discussed previously, we weren’t expecting to see a loss of food stamp benefits until the end of January, but a grocery store in Indiana reported they are unable to process EBT payments.

In Clay City, Indiana, the local IGA discovered the problem last week. Initially, they thought it was a technical glitch.

“Our machines weren’t taking any EBT cards and we didn’t really know what was going on. We didn’t know if it was a technical issue. And then we found out it was due to the government shutting down,” Tristen Malone said. (source)

And although it’s for a slightly different reason, The Red Lion store in York County, Pennsylvania has also had issues. New owners recently purchased the grocery store and sent in their application to accept government benefits before the shutdown occurred.

“Right now we’re officially frozen because the government is shut down and we can’t process our application.”

Tom Lohr is the new owner of D & K.

He says they tried to get pre-approved for the license before the sale went through.

“We tried to be proactive and start this in December, late November, early December , set up the new entities with the businesses it just has not worked out.”

Lohr purchased the business, but doesn’t own the company name, so the license belongs to the original owners.

“We were trying to make it a smooth transition where it would happen the first day we opened, they said if we didn’t hear anything by January 4th to give them a call back. They went dead basically just before Christmas, I think,” said Lohr.

Sixteen percent of their business comes from people who use food stamps.

D & K wants to be able to serve those in need, they’re just waiting for the government to re-open. (source)

And by the end of January, these two stores may only be a drop in the bucket.

Yemen’s Loss Of Antiquities Is ‘Robbing Them Of Their Future’

In Yemen, tens of thousands of children have starved to death in a war led by Saudi Arabia that will soon enter its fourth year. Another 14 million — half the country’s population — are at risk of starvation.

A November 2018 report from Save the Children estimates that 85,000 children under the age of five “have died from extreme hunger or disease since the war in Yemen escalated.” The United Nations, meanwhile, has said the war in Yemen is the largest and worst humanitarian crisis in the world today.

Thousands of civilians have been killed, and in the backdrop of this bloodshed and destruction is another tragedy: the looting of the country’s history. Its precious antiquities plundered by criminals and violent extremists.

Deborah Lehr is the founder and chair of the Antiquities Coalition, an organization that works to stop the trafficking of antiquities and preserve cultural heritage.. She co-wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post this week with Yemen’s Ambassador to the United States, Ahmed Awad Bin Mubarak, about what the loss of antiquities means for Yemen’s future.

“There’s no question that there’s a humanitarian crisis and it’s very tragic the loss of life and displacement that has taken place, but these items, these symbols really, represent their rich history, their religion and quite honestly, their economic future,” Lehr says. “All of these are being taken away. The robbing of the past is really robbing them of their future.”

Lehr spoke with NPR’s Leila Fadel about what’s happening in Yemen as these antiquities are taken from the country and what she has proposed with the ambassador to stop the loss of Yemen’s history and culture.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

TV Networks Consider Not Airing Trump’s Border Security Address

Several major television networks are apparently unsure whether or not to air President Trump’s live address to the nation on border security Tuesday due to concern over what he will say.

According to The Hill, CNN and Fox News Channel are planning to air Trump’s address on border security, while the basic cable networks CBS, NBC, and ABC have not committed one way or the other.

MSNBC has not made a public comment one way or the other, and the network has repeatedly opted not to air Trump events before.

Trump plans to address the nation for the first time from the Oval Office Tuesday night on “the humanitarian and national security crisis on our Southern Border.”

The government shutdown over Democrats’ refusal to pass spending for border security is now in its third week.

Many media figures weighed in on social media Monday over the decision.

CNN’s Brian Stelter tweeted that a “TV exec” told him he was torn on what to do about the address.

“TV exec texts: ‘He calls us fake news all the time, but needs access to airwaves… If we give him the time, he’ll deliver a fact-free screed without rebuttal. And if we don’t give him the time, he’ll call every network partisan. So we are damned if we do and damned if we don’t,'” Stelter posted.

Last week, Stelter used his newsletter to promote the idea of not airing presidential events live because of Trump’s “lies.”

Glenn Kessler of the Washington Post, among others, pointed out that when former president Obama gave an address on immigration in 2014, networks did not run it because it was thought of as too political.

Others called for outright censorship, with Vox Media’s Matt Yglesias saying, “Don’t give Trump free airtime to lie about the shutdown with no interruptions, context, or fact-checking.”

Professors warn: German welcome culture is over, people focus on resistance and national identity

Two professors have warned for the future as more Germans are ‘radicalising’ and the welcome culture is over.

The professors made their statement after the vehicular attacks on migrants in Bottrop and Essen on New Year’s Day by a radicalised German citizen.

Professor in criminology Hans-Dieter Schwind warned that “the welcome culture in Germany is over”. According to Schwind the attack, that injured eight people, can be ‘related’ to the fact that Germans see migration increasingly as a threat.

“People are seething, and then suddenly there is an outbreak. This is a dangerous development,” the criminologist says.

Schwind himself had expected such a case much earlier. Amok rides like those in Bottrop and the attacks on refugee shelters in recent months are just the extreme tip of a more general development and he worries that this will continue.

Professor Andreas Zick, a conflict and violence researcher, says that people from the middle of society are increasingly radicalised. People who previously had no connection to right-wing extremist ideology.

The culprit had certainly been on the Internet before his amok ride and was infected by a movement that believes that the country is alienated and the policy proves a loss of control.

“There is a growing mood in the population that speaks of national identity, resistance and control that you need to take back into your own hands. This self-empowerment of the citizens worries me very much,” he says.

French PM says new, tougher laws on unauthorized protests coming in wake of Yellow Vest clashes

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has said that the government will crack down on unauthorized protests and toughen punishment for rioting in the wake of anti-government Yellow Vest demonstrations which began in November.

The new measures will significantly toughen punishment for people who participate in riots, Philippe said, while adding that it was still “necessary to preserve the freedom” to demonstrate in France. Those who want to protest peacefully should not be punished, he said.

The announcement comes as part of new “public order” measures unveiled by the government after the Yellow Vest protests resulted in violence against police officers and government buildings.

Philippe’s office said in a statement on Monday that the government would take “a very firm stance” against the “continued unacceptable violence across the country.”

Philippe also told channel TF1 that a major police force of 80,000 will be deployed in France next Saturday, including 5,000 in Paris. Over 1,000 people have already been charged in connection with the protests and rioting, he added.

“Over 1,000 sentences have been given in total. Around 5,600 people have been detained since the beginning of the [Yellow Vest] movement,” Philippe said.

“We cannot accept that some people take advantage of these demonstrations to break, to burn,” he stressed.

The priority of the state and the media has been to protect Islam from criticism – Anne Marie Waters

When 22 people were murdered by an Islamic terrorist in Manchester in 2017, Prime Minister Theresa May responded, in Parliament, by telling us (very matter-of-factly) that the murderers were following a “perversion of Islam”. She offered no evidence for this, because she didn’t need to, the comforting lie was enough.

The Mayor of Manchester was equally matter-of-fact when he declared that the killers weren’t Muslim at all. Labour’s Andy Burnham said on LBC: “The worst thing that can happen is that people use this to blame an entire community, the Muslim community.”

The worst thing? Blaming Islam is the worst thing that could happen? Yes, that’s what he means. Criticism of Islam is deliberately skewed into an attack on Muslims, therefore it should never be done, no matter how justified.

Two other major attacks took place in 2017, both in London, and both, according to our leaders, nothing at all to do with the teachings of Islam. This is despite the fact that Islamic scripture literally promotes terrorism. Mohammed is quite clear: “I have been made victorious with terror”. (Sahih Bukhari Volume 004, Book 052, Hadith Number 220).

The reason there would be no public discussion about Islam’s teachings is simple: such discussion would reveal the truth about Islam’s teachings

However, if you dare to suggest that the words of Mohammed may inspire the actions of a devout Muslim, you will find that you’re a hate-filled Islamophobic fascist.

On Westminster Bridge, Khalid Masood murdered 5, and at London Bridge, 8 died at the hands of Muslims using a van and several knives. Witnesses at the scene of the latter attack heard the cry of “this is for Allah”, but still, no serious discussion of Islamic scripture was to take place.

The reason there would be no public discussion about Islam’s teachings is simple: such discussion would reveal the truth about Islam’s teachings, and that would never do.
