It's the responses to the emotions that are categorized, not the emotions themselves. As a diagnostic tool, yeah, it CAN be useful to determine what's within the range of "normal" for an individual and what's not necessarily within the range of "normal" for an individual.

The truth is that this manual exists primarily for insurance coding reasons, not treatment reasons. Maybe some novice practitioners rely on it or attach a great deal of importance on it? Most in the field do not, though.
