25 human traffickers convicted in 2018 – NAPTIP

The National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) on Tuesday said it had secured 25 convictions of human traffickers in 2018.

Arinze Orakwue, the agency’s Director of Public Enlightenment, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka that 1,922 human trafficking cases were reported to the agency last year while 192 of them were fully investigated.

The director said the agency had redoubled its efforts to drastically reduce the rate of trafficking in persons across the country in 2019.

Mr Orakwue said part of NAPTIP’s efforts to curtail the act was its plan to canvass for the inclusion of human trafficking-related issues in the nation’s school curriculum.

He said if the plan worked, it would help in no small measure in checking the act of human trafficking in the country.

The director said such a subject would also appeal to the conscience of the youths not to avail themselves to human trafficking and inculcate the zeal to live right in their minds.

Mr Orakwue urged religious leaders to also preach about the inherent dangers of trafficking in persons as a way of curbing the act.

He noted that the agency has nine offices across the country located in Enugu, Lagos, Kano, Benin, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Uyo, Osogbo, and Abuja.

PDP suspends deputy national chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended its deputy national chairman (North), Gamawa Babayo, over allegation of dereliction of duty and anti-party activity.

The National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said Mr Babayo was suspended by the National Working Committee (NWC).

The committee held an extraordinary session on January 5, where it reviewed the petition against the deputy national chairman.

“The NWC found merit in the petition on allegation of dereliction of duty and anti-party activity as contained in Section 58 (1) e, f, g, h of the PDP Constitution.

“Therefore, in exercise of section 29 (2) a, b and c, the NWC hereby invokes Section 59 (1) d of the constitution of the PDP on the Deputy National Chairman (North) and accordingly suspends him from the party immediately.”

The PDP has faced a fresh round of defections in the last few days.

On Monday, President Muhammadu Buhari received various members of the PDP Support Groups from the North-east, who defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In Kano, a former governorship candidate, Bello Sani-Gwarzo, dumped the party and also joined the APC.

IRS to Issue Tax Refunds Despite Partial Government Shutdown

The IRS will process tax returns beginning in late January and provide refunds as scheduled despite the partial government shutdown.

The IRS is one of the agencies that has not received renewed funding as President Donald Trump and lawmakers engage in a standoff over funding for the border wall.

The agency is able to issue refunds through a permanent, indefinite appropriation that gives it authority to pay them despite the lapse in funding.

Although in 2011 the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) directed the IRS not to pay refunds during a lapse, OMB has reviewed the relevant law at Treasury’s request and concluded that IRS may pay tax refunds during a lapse, the IRS said in a press release.

Alabama Attorney General Asks Feds to Probe 2017 Election

The Alabama attorney general on Jan. 7, called on federal authorities to investigate the state’s 2017 special election for the U.S. Senate.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall made the announcement after conducting an informal inquiry into reports of a false-flag operation designed to boost Democrat Doug Jones, who defeated Republican Roy Moore by a thin margin in a hotly contested race.

The New York Times reported in December that a secret social media operation funded by billionaire Democratic donor Reid Hoffman directed thousands of accounts designed to appear like Russian bots to follow Moore. A Facebook page then falsely portrayed Moore’s social media efforts as being amplified up by a network of Russian bots.

On Jan. 7, The New York Times reported on a second false-flag campaign which targeted Moore, this time by falsely promoting a non-existent Republican campaign to ban alcohol in Alabama.

Mexico’s president to raise pay, boost economy along border so residents ‘will have no reason to cross into US’

The minimum wage for Mexican border residents will double and gasoline prices will be set on a par with those in the U.S. as part of an ambitious plan by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to stimulate the economy, make the region more competitive and stop his countrymen from heading north.

The moves come in a region facing the worst drug violence in years and a looming humanitarian crisis set off by the rising number of Central American migrants in this city and elsewhere along the border with the United States. Many are there awaiting the opportunity to request asylum in the U.S. but have been deterred by the immigration policies of President Donald Trump.

Lopez Obrador and his team say they see the border as a place of opportunity, to build so-called economic curtains, or nets, not walls.

“The free zone on the border is part of a national development plan,” Lopez Obrador said Saturday in a speech in Ciudad Juarez, one of several border cities that he is visiting over the weekend. “The central idea is to create nets for economic development from south to north so that Mexicans won’t have to emigrate anymore, so that they can be happy where they were born, where their families live, to enjoy their culture and customs.”

His words generated big applause from the crowd, even though immigration from Mexico is at historic lows, down from 1.6 million overall apprehensions in 2000 to less than 400,000 last year. Mexicans accounted for the majority of the apprehensions.

Trump signs Forever GI Bill Housing Payment Fulfillment Act, two DHS acts

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump has signed into law the Forever GI Bill Housing Payment Fulfillment Act, the Hack DHS Act and the Public-Private Cybersecurity Cooperation Act, all of which were either co-sponsored or co-introduced by U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H.

Trump last Thursday signed into law the Forever GI Bill Housing Payment Fulfillment Act, bipartisan legislation co-sponsored by Hassan, to ensure that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs reimburses veterans for missed or underpaid Forever GI Bill housing benefits.

The legislation addresses the VA’s failure to fully comply with reimbursement rates set by the Forever GI Bill. The improper payments resulted from IT systems that had not been properly updated and the lack of internal processes to get the VA the necessary information about payment rates.

Iran’s deputy oil minister: Our customer are not willing to buy more oil

Jan. 7, 2019 - Amir Hossein Zamani, the deputy oil minister of Hassan Rouhani’s cabinet, said, “The oil customers of Iran aren’t willing to buy an extra barrel more than the quota the U.S. has defined.”

Zamani added, “The pressure and influence of the U.S. is to the extent that China, India, Japan, South Korea and other countries who have obtained exemptions from the U.S. are not willing to buy a single barrel more from Iran than the exemption they’ve received.”

The U.S. re-imposed sanctions on the Iranian regime following its withdrawal from the nuclear deal which had given Tehran relief from international sanctions in exchange for limiting its nuclear program. The U.S. government has demanded the Iranian regime to tone down its other nefarious activities, including the development of ballistic missiles and terrorist meddling in neighboring countries. The sanctions have targeted the oil and financial sector of the Iranian regime and will largely constrain its capabilities to fund terrorism in the countries of the Middle East.

The U.S. also gave exemptions to several countries that were previously importing oil from Iran on conditions that they take steps to gradually decrease their imports. The U.S. has stated that its goal is to reduce the Iranian regime’s oil exports to zero.

Since the sanctions came into effect, the price of oil has reduced. The deputy oil minister of the Iranian regime did not exactly state how much oil the regime was exporting and only declared, “The oil sector is trying sell as much oil as it can.”

Zamani also said, “Iran lost the opportunity provided by JCPOA,” using the acronym for the nuclear deal forged between the Iranian regime world powers.

An 'accidental' death? Protests break out outside home of Democratic donor, after body found inside

Protests have broken out outside the California home of wealthy Democratic donor and LGBT activist Ed Buck, after the second dead body of a black man was found inside in less than two years.

The dead man – an unidentified man in his 50s – was a “longtime friend” of Buck, Attorney Seymour Amster told Fox News. He apparently turned up at Buck’s door on Sunday night and began acting “in a bizarre way,” before dying in the Los Angeles apartment.

“As far as we're concerned, this is an accidental death,” Amster told Fox.

Neighbors aren’t convinced. Shortly after the discovery on Monday, they began turning up outside Buck’s Los Angeles residence. The protesters blame Buck for the man’s death, and say they have called the police on the wealthy donor before.

The protesters are now turning their anger towards the neighbors who live in Ed Buck’s apartment building, saying they are complicit in the deaths of the men who have died inside of his apartment. Neighbors say they’ve called police and they’re sick of Buck’s actions. @FOXLApic.twitter.com/OmkGS23Qqs
