Fellow NZ anon here, somewhat long term visitor here
Despite his donations etc to Trump, the case of the citizenship of Peter Thiel tells you all you need to know about the current state of NZ, if you ask me. Money was basically all it took to buy citizenship in a sovereign nation. As a natural-born citizen of said nation, that disgusts me. I understand that he has probably put more money into the NZ economy than I ever will in my lifetime, but things like citizenship still shouldn't be up for sale. There was also the case of the Chinese guy who, from what I remember, essentially bought into a seat in the National party. Both the Thiel and the Chinese case (forgive me for not remembering the name of the Chinese individual) were both actions of the National party, but I honestly can't bring myself to believe the practically-socialist Labour party is any better. People may criticize the one-party Chinese system, but the two-party system of the US and what essentially is a two-party system in NZ aren't much better - they're the illusion of choice. There is an underlying disease, of which these are the symptoms.
