This is all scripted for the sake of the general public. The plot is so rambling, so elaborate, it needs to be doled out in small bites. Running this game within a "real" timespan would be too confusing, too incomprehensible. When looking at the individual pieces all together, the storyline makes no sense, but it doesn't have to because the expectation is that 90% are not going to be looking that closely, and most who try will be lost in the planted blind alleys. Things like Las Vegas and other events might be the defendants going off-script, but Kelly points his index at his eye and everybody rushes back to their marks. Justice will be served at a dinner theater.
