Duterte's Philippines drug war death toll rises above 5,000

The official death toll from Rodrigo Duterte’s violent war on drugs in the Philippines has risen above 5,000 people, authorities have said.

Derrick Carreon, a spokesman for the Philippine drug enforcement agency (PDEA), said that, according to official figures, between July 2016 and the end of November this year, 5,050 lives were lost, mostly at the hands of the police.

Since taking power in July 2016, Duterte has made his crackdown on drug users and dealers the focal point of his administration, continuing the brutal campaign of violence that he enacted as mayor of the city of Davao.

Lawyer’s Status Throws Genocide Conviction of Khmer Rouge Leader Into Doubt

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — Barely a month after an international tribunal in Cambodia convicted two senior Khmer Rouge leaders of genocide, its historic verdict was being thrown into question by an unexpected twist: an unlicensed lawyer.

The lawyer, Victor Koppe, has worked as defense counsel since 2007 for one of the convicted men, Nuon Chea. His client, now 92, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the international tribunal last month.

But Mr. Koppe was dismissed by the tribunal this past week after the bar association in Cambodia said that Mr. Koppe, a Dutch national, had not been a member of the bar in the Netherlands for nearly three years. Without his foreign registration, Mr. Koppe could not be licensed as a lawyer in Cambodia, the bar association said.

Even though it rarely happens, but the snow fell on Wednesday evening in Mostar and stayed on the streets.

The town on Neretva River, used to warm winters and sun, was “surprised” by the snow, which made the youngest one happy, but on the other hands, made the traffic difficult.

Snow in Mostar is usually seen once in two or three years.

Earlier, the weather forecasts announced the snow, and the Civil Protection and Fire Department of Herzegovina-Neretva Canton has issued a warning on the upcoming snowfall.
