Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein to resign soon - report

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is expected to resign as soon as new Attorney General William Barr is confirmed, an ABC News report claims. Rosenstein’s departure has long been the subject of speculation.

Citing anonymous sources, ABC claims that Rosenstein will leave his position as the nation’s number two law enforcement officer around the time William Barr, President Trump’s nominee for Attorney General, takes office following a Senate confirmation. Barr’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing takes place next week.

The source said that Rosenstein is resigning of his own accord, and not being forced out by Trump. The Deputy AG had apparently planned all along to serve for two years.

SEAL to stand trial for murder, other alleged war crimes

Special Warfare Operator Chief Edward “Eddie” Gallagher will be arraigned Friday at Naval Base San Diego on a long list of criminal charges, including the premeditated murder of a wounded Islamic State prisoner of war.

Navy Region Southwest spokesman Brian O’Rourke said that the initial court-martial proceeding is slated for Friday.

His court-martial trial was greenlighted by Rear Adm. Yancy B."Lurch" Lindsey, the region’s commander, following a legal review of the SEAL’s two-day Article 32 hearing in November.

Prosecutors contend that Gallagher, 39, is a callous murderer who stabbed to death the teenage detainee on May 3, 2017 near the Iraqi city of Mosul and also gunned down unwitting civilians with his sniper rifle, bragged about racking up kills and threatened to intimidate and publicly out SEAL buddies who complained to superiors and investigators about him.

France to extradite African football chief to war crimes tribunal

PARIS - France will transfer Patrice-Edouard Ngaissona, a member of Africa's top footballing body, to the International Criminal Court in The Hague where he faces war crimes charges, a court ruled Monday.

Ngaissona, who is from the Central African Republic (CAR) and sits on the board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has been in a jail near Paris since his arrest on 12 December.

The one-time sports minister, who is head of the Central African Republic's football association, was controversially elected to the executive board of the CAF general assembly in February.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant in December for Ngaissona for allegedly coordinating so-called anti-Balaka militias which emerged after civil war broke out in the Central African Republic in 2013.

Bashir blames conspirators for protest violence

Khartoum (AFP) - Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Tuesday blamed conspirators for violence during deadly anti-government protests, as an impoverished town held a "martyrs' rally" to honour those killed.

Bashir, speaking at a military base near the town of Atbara where the first protest erupted last month, also slammed some political groups who have called for regime change in Sudan.

"Those who conspired against us and planted traitors amongst us are those who carried out arson attacks and caused damage," the official SUNA news agency quoted Bashir telling soldiers.

The veteran leader, who has been in power since 1989, did not elaborate on who the alleged conspirators were.

Protests have rocked Sudan since December 19, when unrest broke out over a government decision to raise the price of bread.

In the initial protests that erupted in towns and villages last month before spreading to the capital Khartoum, several buildings of Bashir's ruling National Congress Party (NCP) were torched.

Hague Prosecutor: Croatian Govt ‘Blocking’ War Crime Cases

The chief prosecutor at the Hague war crimes, Serge Brammertz, told the UN Security Council that the Zagreb government is effectively blocking cases against former Croatian Army and Croatian Defence Council fighters.

Serge Brammertz, chief prosecutor at the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals, said in his report to the UN Security Council in New York on Monday that the Croatian government’s actions have resulted the blocking of a large and growing number of cases against Croatian Army and Croatian Defence Council fighters.

Brammertz’s report said that the Croatian government has not reversed a decision it made in 2015 ordering the Justice Ministry in Zagreb not to provide court cooperation in certain war crimes cases, and is continuing to exert pressure on judicial processes.

Despite direct efforts by the prosecutor’s office at the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals to convince the Croatian authorities to change their policy, little progress has been made, the report said.

“Such a policy has an influence on promoting impunity to the detriment of victims throughout the region who deserve justice,” said Brammertz’s report.

The International Military Tribunal for the Far East

The International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE), Tokyo Trials, or Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal, was established by an executive decree of General Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander of the Allied Countries in Japan, who acted under US command. This decision was grounded in an agreement between China, US and UK to punish Japanese leadership. The IMTFE started on 29 April 1946, trying the leadership of the Empire of Japan for three categories of war crimes committed during World War II. The Prosecutors arrived from 11 Allied Countries, of which the Chief Prosecutor came from the US. In fact, the US was the dominant factor behind the Tribunal. The three categories of war crimes were the following. ‘A’ crimes referred to conspiracy to start and wage war, ‘B’ crimes entailed “conventional” atrocities or crimes against humanity, and ‘C’ crimes involved planning, ordering, authorizing or failing to prevent crimes. For ‘A’ crimes 28 leaders were indicted, of which nine civilian and 19 military. Of this group seven people were sentenced to death and 16 to life imprisonment. Also 5700 Japanese people were indicted for ‘B’ and ‘C’ crimes. As a result of the Tokyo Trials, war crimes in China were revealed, including the Nanking Massacre and the unconventional narcotics and bacteriological warfare. In 1947 and 1948, 50 suspects were released. The Emperor and his family were never indicted. The IMTFE was operational for two and a half years. On 12 November 1948, the IMTFE adjourned.

NAACP Screams White Supremacy Over Earthquake Signs Posted

The NAACP of Portland, Oregon, is claiming that earthquake warnings on old buildings are somehow connected to white supremacy.

The city government is requiring warning signs on brick buildings that are at risk of collapsing in the event of an earthquake, according to The Oregonian.

The policy was approved by the City Council in October, and signs were required in public buildings this week.

Most private buildings will be required to post the signs by March, but churches and nonprofits have two years to comply.

Officials eventually want old buildings to be upgraded because there’s about a 50 percent chance that Portland will be hit by an earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, also known as the Cascade Fault, off the Oregon coast in the next 50 years, according to The Associated Press.

The policy will affect roughly 1,600 buildings, with many of them in areas that have a predominantly black population.

Clearly, the policy isn’t meant to target blacks. The neighborhoods affected just happened to be predominantly black.

Morocco arrests Daesh cell

Moroccan security forces have dismantled a suspected Daesh cell in the North African country, according to the Interior Ministry on Tuesday.

In a statement, the ministry said three suspects had been detained for links to the Daesh terrorist group.

The suspects, aged between 18 and 31, had been active in the cities of Nador and Driouch in northern Morocco.

The ministry said the suspects were inciting support for Daesh and plotting to carry out terrorist attacks in the country.

"This operation confirms the continuation of terrorist threats and insistence of those who are obsessed with the extremist ideology of Daesh," the ministry said.

According to latest official figures released late 2018, Morocco has dismantled 183 terror cells since 2002.

House Democrats Move Quickly To Introduce Gun Control Legislation

Newly re-appointed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her Democratic majority are pushing for more gun control with legislation that would mandate a background check on anyone attempting to buy a firearm.

As The Hill reported, the Democrats introduced a bill Tuesday, eight years after former Democratic Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords narrowly escaped death after a gunman opened fire on her. They have named the “H.R. 8” to recognize the anniversary of the shooting and what they describe as the inaction of House Republicans
