To the men in his command, sure. They loved him. To most Marines, they have no personal interaction with him whatsoever. Marine Corps officers are not like the other services' officers; they are down and dirty in the mud with their men, for the most part. Mattis' men seemed to love him, so he took care of them and looked after them. Above that, not much can be said. Except of course that when you make flag, you become less military and more politician.

Turkey got a lot of play by scooping up Pastor Bronson and using him as a chip against the USA in negotiating the release of their alleged coup leader living here in the States. Iran saw that it kind of worked, so they're scooping up US citizens as chips to negotiate a new nuclear deal.
