Bolsonaro Pulls Brazil Out of U.N. Migration Pact: ‘We Will Define Our Rules’

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro announced he will pull his country out of the United Nations Migration Pact on Wednesday, declaring that the country will set its own migration rules without external pressures.

On Tuesday, multiple outlets reported that Brazilian officials had informed the U.N. of their decision. The move comes over a month after Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo revealed his government’s intention to exit the agreement, describing it as “an inappropriate instrument” to dealing with the issue. Bolsonaro’s government took power on January 1.

Explaining the decision on Twitter, Bolsonaro said that the country would determine its own immigration policy, but would continue to provide refuge for “those in need.”

“Brazil is sovereign in deciding whether or not to accept migrants … Not anybody can come into our home, nor can anybody enter Brazil via a pact adopted by third parties. NO TO THE MIGRATION PACT,” Bolsonaro wrote. “We will never refuse help to those in need, but immigration cannot be indiscriminate. There is necessary criteria, seeking the best solution according to the reality of each country. If we control who we let into our homes, why would we do differently with our Brazil?”

Mexico finds 20 bodies, 17 of them burned, near U.S. border

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican authorities discovered 20 bodies on Wednesday, 17 of them burned, near the city of Nuevo Laredo, close to the U.S. border, a security official said.

Five burned vehicles were also found near the bodies in the town of Miguel Aleman, across the Rio Grande from Texas in the northern state of Tamaulipas, the official said in a statement, without providing details.

Tamaulipas has become one of the most violent states in Mexico, convulsed by gangs fighting to control drug trafficking, extortion rackets and the exploitation of migrants.

Hundreds of bodies in unmarked graves have been found in recent years in the aftermath of the decade-long drug war led by the military to battle the cartels, which led to increasingly bloody turf wars.

Turkey to launch attack against Kurds in Syria

Turkey’s foreign minister said it will launch a military attack against US-allied Kurds in Syria even if the Trump administration delays withdrawing American troops from the war-torn country.

“If the [withdrawal] is put off with ridiculous excuses like Turks are massacring Kurds, which do not reflect the reality, we will implement this decision,” Mevlut Cavusoglu told state media Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

Ankara considers the Kurdish forces in Syria that have been trained by and are assisting US troops in the fight against Islamic State militants to be linked to groups trying to create instability inside Turkey.

President Trump last month announced that he would pull out the 2,000 US troops in Syria, a controversial decision that led to the resignation of Defense Secretary James Mattis, who wrote that the commander-in-chief was abandoning US allies.

National Security adviser John Bolton, speaking in Israel on Sunday, said the administration would delay the withdrawal until Turkey assures the safety of Kurdish fighters and ISIS is defeated.

Earlier this week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan refused to meet with Bolton during a trip to Ankara and said he is making a “serious mistake.”

“Bolton has made a serious mistake and whoever thinks like this has also made a mistake. It is not possible for us to make compromises on this point,” Erdogan said Tuesday in a speech to parliament.

He also doubled down on his recent threats to attack the Kurds.

“If they are terrorists, we will do what is necessary no matter where they come from,” Erdogan said.
