Trump: 'Surprising' if I don't declare national emergency for wall

President Trump on Thursday gave his strongest indication yet that he may declare a national emergency to circumvent Congress to build a wall along the U.S-Mexico border.

Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump said it would be “surprising to me” if he did not make an emergency declaration if talks with Democrats fail.

“If this doesn't work out, probably I will do it. I would almost say definitely,” Trump said.

Trump asserted that he has “the absolute right to declare a national emergency,” even though some legal scholars and Democrats say he lacks the power to do so.

But the president said his preference is still to work out a deal with Congress for wall funding.

The comments come one day after negotiations with top Democrats at the White House ended in acrimonious fashion, with Trump walking out of the room when Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) refused his demand for wall funding.

The failure of the talks raised the likelihood that Trump will act on his own to build the wall, which is one of his biggest unfulfilled campaign promises.

Trump laid into Democrats during his 15-minute session with reporters Thursday, saying they have “gone crazy” after being “taken over” by young lawmakers who don't “care about crime,” an apparent reference to freshmen members like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).

“I find China, frankly, in many ways, to be far more honorable than Cryin' Chuck and Nancy,” Trump said, referring to Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.). “China is actually much easier to deal with than the opposition party.”

The president also angrily denied Schumer’s claim that he slammed the table before getting up and leaving Wednesday’s negotiating session in the White House Situation Room.

“I didn’t pound the table. I didn’t pound the table. That is a lie,” he said. “I don’t have temper tantrums.”

Trump’s comments raised the question of if or how negotiations can move forward to end the shutdown, which started Dec. 22 and is affecting about 25 percent of the federal government.

The president is traveling on Thursday to the border town of McAllen, Texas, where he plans to press his case that a wall is the only thing that can stop what he says is a “crisis” of drug smuggling and illegal immigration at the southern border.

Some in Washington believe the trip is a chance for Trump to lay the groundwork for a national emergency declaration.

“I’m not prepared to do that yet, but if I have to, I will,” the president said of the emergency declaration.

Pedophile Reportedly Confesses to Killing 6-Year-Old Beauty Queen JonBenét Ramsey in 1996

On Thursday, The Daily Mail reported that a man who has been a suspect in the murder of six-year-old beauty queen JonBenét Ramsey in 1996 reportedly admitted he killed her. The crime has been unsolved for 22 years.

DailyMailTV obtained letters written by Gary Oliva, who is now 54, to a former high school classmate, music publicist Michael Vail. Investigators have conjectured that Oliva joined other men in in breaking into JonBenét's Ramsey’s house. A ransom note demanding $118,000 for the girl was found on the kitchen staircase before her body was found. The tiny girl was found with a broken skull from a blow to the head and had been strangled; a garrote was tied around her neck. In 2003, trace DNA that was taken from the child’s clothes showed it came from an unknown male; prompting the DA to send the Ramseys a letter of apology in 2008, declaring the family "completely cleared."

Oliva, a convicted pedophile who is currently serving a 10-year sentence in a Colorado prison for having child pornography on his phone, allegedly stated in a letter to Vail, “'I never loved anyone like I did JonBenét and yet I let her slip and her head bashed in half and I watched her die. It was an accident. Please believe me. She was not like the other kids.” He wrote in another letter, “JonBenét completely changed me and removed all evil from me. Just one look at her beautiful face, her glowing beautiful skin, and her divine God-body, I realized I was wrong to kill other kids. Yet by accident she died and it was my fault.”

Vail, 55, told DailyMailTV:

My suspicions began when Gary called me late at night on December 26, 1996. He was sobbing and said, 'I hurt a little girl.' I had known Gary from my time at high school and we had kept in touch. When he said he had hurt a little girl I tried to get more information out of him. The only other thing he told me was that he was in the Boulder, Colorado area. On December 27 I read on the front page of my local newspaper 'Girl, 6, slain in Boulder, Colorado'. I knew I had to alert the police. I immediately called the Boulder Police Department and told them what I knew about Gary and what he had told me just days earlier. They didn't get back to me. Three months later I called the police again to find out what was going on in its investigation of Gary, but instead I was sent to a police answering machine set up for tips on the JonBenét case. I left a message on the recorded line and again I never heard back from investigators.”

He continued:

I've continued this for decades now, even with him being in prison. But he has only just admitted to killing her. He believes he will go to hell if he doesn't admit to it. I have now sent these letters to Boulder police in the hope it will get Gary to provide them with firm proof and to name who else may have been involved in JonBenét's death. I hope it helps bring justice for JonBenét and peace for her family. Now they have this, a written confession, the police need to charge him with her murder. The thought that he could be released on probation next year chills me to the bone because he should never be allowed out. He is a danger to society. The day he walks free is the day I will be terrified for every child and family.

The letters were given to Boulder, Colorado, police. Police spokesperson Laurie Ogden told DailyMailTV, “The Boulder Police Department is aware of and has investigated Mr. Olivas’ potential involvement in this case. We have passed the additional information you provided onto investigators. We will not comment on any actions or the status of this investigation.”

JonBenét Ramsey’s body was discovered by her father John Ramsey in their home’s basement on December 26, 1996. DailyMailTV gained possession of a police report regarding Oliva’s 2016 arrest; the report stated hundreds of photos of JonBenét were found on the phone. Prior investigations showed Oliva had an address ten blocks from the Ramsay home in 1996.

NY Gov. Cuomo refuses to sign state budget until lawmakers approve bill legalizing abortion for any reason until birth

Hillary Clinton was alongside the governor when he delivered a pro-abortion speech earlier this week

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has refused to sign the state's 2019-20 budget until lawmakers approve a bill that would make it legal to have an abortion for any reason up until birth, the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle reported.

On Monday, Cuomo delivered a pro-abortion speech at Barnard College in Manhattan, where he vowed not to support the budget until the Legislature passes the Reproductive Health Act and the Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act. Hillary Clinton, former secretary of state and presidential candidate, stood alongside the governor at the event.

The 61-year-old Democrat also vowed during his speech to push an amendment to enshrine abortion in the state constitution. Cuomo first called for the constitutional amendment last year.

What does the Reproductive Health Act say?

Currently, only licensed physicians are allowed to perform an abortion, and only up to 24 weeks of pregnancy.

"Every individual who becomes pregnant has the fundamental right to choose to carry the pregnancy to term, to give birth to a child or have an abortion," the Reproductive Health Act reads.

If approved, any licensed health care provider acting in "good faith" would be able to perform an abortion at any time up until birth.

Abortion would also be removed as a crime from the state's penal code.

The bill has passed the Democrat-controlled assembly in the past, according to the Rochester Democrat. However, it stalled in the Republican-led Senate for more than a decade.

Democrats gained Senate majority after the 2018 midterm elections.

"This is only the beginning of the protections that we will have for our women, for our environment, criminal-justice reform, education — the list goes on," state Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins said Monday, according to the report. "But in January, the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we will make our statement, we will make our mark."

Stewart-Cousins first sponsored the Reproductive Health Act in 2007.

What about enshrining abortion in the NY Constitution?

Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has a conservative majority, some pro-abortion lawmakers and activists fear Roe v. Wade could someday be overturned.

The bill to enshrine federal abortion rights would require a separate vote and approval by the Legislature to start the amendment process. The 2021 Legislature would also have to approve it before it could be sent to voters, who would have to pass the measure before it would become law.

What did Clinton say?

Clinton praised the governor for pushing for abortion protections, describing him as a "lifelong champion of these rights," according to the Rochester Democrat.

"New York led the rest of the country even before Roe v. Wade in making abortion legal," Clinton said during her speech.

"But the struggle for women's equality is not something simply to be read about in the pages of your history books," Clinton said. "It continues to be the fight of our lifetime."

Pompeo's Middle East Speech - A Blustering Promise Of Less U.S. Involvement

Today Mike Pompeo, the U.S. Secretary of State, visited Egypt. He held a somewhat delusional speech at the American University in Cairo. It is headlined:

A Force for Good: America Reinvigorated in the Middle East:

There is little in the speech that supports the headline. It starts with blustering:

[B]ecause I’m a military man by training, I’ll be very blunt and direct today: America is a force for good in the Middle East.

We need to acknowledge that truth, because if we don’t, we make bad choices – now and in the future.

Pompeo blames Obama for the trouble the "force of good" caused:

Remember: It was here, here in this city, that another American stood before you.

He told you that radical Islamist terrorism does not stem from an ideology. He told you that 9/11 led my country to abandon its ideals, particularly in the Middle East. He told you that the United States and the Muslim world needed, quote, “a new beginning,” end of quote. The results of these misjudgments have been dire.

In falsely seeing ourselves as a force for what ails the Middle East, we were timid in asserting ourselves when the times – and our partners – demanded it.

The good news. The good news is this: The age of self-inflicted American shame is over, and so are the policies that produced so much needless suffering. Now comes the real new beginning.

It follows a list of false claims and fake history:

For those who fret about the use of American power, remember this: America has always been, and always will be, a liberating force, not an occupying power. We’ve never dreamed of domination in the Middle East.

Pompeo ignores the still valid Carter doctrine which demands exclusive U.S. domination of the Middle East: "An attempt by any outside force to gain control of the Persian Gulf region will be regarded as an assault on the vital interests of the United States of America, and such an assault will be repelled by any means necessary, including military force."

When the mission is over, when the job is complete, America leaves. Today in Iraq, at the government’s invitation, we have approximately 5,000 troops where there were once 166,000. We once had tens of thousands of U.S. military stationed – personnel stationed in Saudi Arabia. Now that number is a tiny fraction.

In 2011 the Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki rejected to sign a Status of Force agreement that would have given U.S. troops in Iraq special rights. In consequence the U.S. had to retreat from Iraq. A few troops came back to fight the Islamic State which Obama let grow to eject Maliki. Those troops will too have to leave. After the 1991 war against Iraq, Saudi Arabia came under pressure from radical Islamists to kick the many U.S. troops out of the country. Several thousand sill stayed. After the Kohbar tower bombing in 1996 the rest had to go too. In both cases the retreat was not voluntarily.

The speech goes on with a long passage of bashing Iran and lauding Israel. Pompeo says that the Trump administration wishes to establish the 'Middle East Strategic Alliance', an Arab NATO that allies with Israel. A pipe dream born out of sheer ignorance that is destined to fail.

We’re also seeing remarkable change. New bonds are taking root that were unimaginable until very recently. Who could’ve believed a few years ago that an Israeli prime minister would visit Muscat?

Pompeo: Turkey’s Threats Won’t Delay US Pullout From Syria

Speaking in the Iraqi Kurdish capital of Irbil on Wednesday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo dismissed the idea of Turkish threats of military action against the Syrian YPG having any impact on the US withdrawal from Syria. He said that the pullout would not impact a US commitment to protect the YPG.

Pompeo’s position seems to be to overtly ignore the comments made by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on how no concessions can be made with respect to the YPG. Instead, Pompeo is insisting that Erdogan “understands” the US determination to see the YPG protected, and that he had made some unspecified “commitments” in that regard.

What was actually said isn’t entirely clear, but Pompeo has repeatedly made reference to Turkish promises to “protect” the Syrian Kurds. Erdogan, on the other hand, has said as recently as yesterday that Turkey “cannot make any concessions” on the YPG.

In the end, Pompeo seems to be willfully ignoring what Turkey is actually saying publicly with the respect to the YPG, and insisting that everything will fall into place, without any suggestion of how this might happen.

Taking Turkey at their word, the more likely scenario is that they follow through on years of threatening to invade YPG territory. The US reaction will likely be minimal, publicly criticizing Turkey, but ultimately not doing anything too serious to the NATO member.

WashPo: 'That Sophisticated, Specific Russian 2016 Voter Targeting Effort Doesn't Seem to Exist'

Facebook data indicates Russians did not specifically target voters in swing states to sway the 2016 election in favor of Donald Trump, according to a report shared Wednesday in The Washington Post.

Philip Bump writes in The Washington Post, "That sophisticated, specific Russian 2016 voter targeting effort doesn’t seem to exist":

The revelation on Tuesday that Donald Trump's 2016 campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, had shared polling data with a colleague in Ukraine who had ties to Russian intelligence predictably kicked up a furor of speculation about the significance of the move. This is what one of the Russia-Trump collusion scenarios looks like: someone from Team Trump passing data to the Russians that the latter group could use to target voters and influence the election. After all, the common understanding is that Russia's interference efforts included sophisticated targeting of specific voting groups on Facebook, which could have made the difference in states that Trump narrowly won on his way to an electoral-vote victory.

That understanding about Russia's sophisticated targeting, though, is not supported by the evidence – if it's not flat-out wrong.

[…] Most of the ads purchased by the Russians didn't specify a geographic target smaller than the United States on the whole, according to a Post review of the ads released by the House Intelligence Committee. Those that did target specific states heavily targeted those that weren't really considered targets of the 2016 election, such as Missouri and Maryland. And of those ads that did target specific states, most happened well before or well after the final weeks of the campaign.

We looked at this broadly in May when the data were first released. The Russian effort included launching Facebook (and subsidiary Instagram) ads each month from June 2015 to May 2017 (plus some in July and August of that year).

'There will be two civilisations in Europe – one Christian, one mixed Islamic': Hungary's PM calls for 'anti-immigrant forces' to take over EU and says he'll 'fight' Macron to save his country

Viktor Orban predicted two civilisations divided by religion within Europe

Orban said 'I must fight' French President Emmanuel Macron over immigration

He called for 'anti-immigrant' coup to break Franco-German dominance in May

Dubbed Italy's Deputy PM Matteo Salvini a 'hero' for urging a 'European Spring'

Hungarian PM Viktor Orban warned of two civilisations in Europe - one Christian, the other mixed Islamic - as he called for an 'anti-immigrant' coup in the EU.

Speaking at a news conference in Budapest, Orban predicted there would be two civilisations, 'one mixed Muslim-Christian in the West, and one traditional European-Christian in Central Europe.'

The nationalist leader called for 'anti-immigration forces' to seize power in May's European elections and said he would 'fight' French President Emmanuel Macron, who he claimed was leading a pro-immigration agenda.

He welcomed a 'Warsaw-Rome axis' as he echoed calls for a 'European Spring' made by the Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini who challenged the 'French-German axis' on Wednesday during a visit to Warsaw.
