Democrats Crack on the Wall

Congressional Democrats are ditching House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s ardent opposition to any barrier or wall along the U.S. border with Mexico, as the partial government shutdown continues and President Donald Trump takes his case directly to the border itself.

““If we have a partial wall, if we have fencing, if we have technology used to keep our border safe, all of that is fine,” Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-IL), the chairwoman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), said on CNN.

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) also backed a barrier along the U.S. border with Mexico.

“Some fencing is useful, some barriers are useful,” Merkley said. “There’s a lot of surveillance technology. I’ve been to some cities on the border that have triple fencing and have more personnel and have the technology to see the people moving in the middle of the night.”

Nancy Pelosi Pushes ‘Technological Wall’ Instead of a Fence

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is reviving the establishment’s “virtual wall” policy on the southern border to soften her uncompromising opposition to President Donald Trump’s push for a real fence on the border.

“What the President is proposing is not the best way to protect our borders … We all support border security, and there is a better way to do it … The positive, shall we say, almost technological wall, that can be built is what we should be doing,” Pelosi said January 10.

21 Killed in Mexican Cartel Battle near Texas Border — 17 Burned

REYNOSA, Tamaulipas – Mexican authorities found the remnants of a fierce gun battle between rival cartels immediately south of the Texas border. The fighting left 21 dead and five torched vehicles.

Authorities believe the cartels used explosives and grenade launchers in the skirmish. One of the vehicles left at the scene was described as a white pickup with Texas license plates and makeshift armored plating. It featured logos to pose as a vehicle used by the Mexican Navy. The Northeast Cartel has a long history of using cloned uniforms and equipment to blame authorities for their atrocities.

U.S. Fertility Rate Declines for Seventh Year Running

The U.S. fertility rate has dropped for the seventh year in a row—and Americans are now having so few babies that the population will be sent into decline without immigration, according to new government numbers. The new figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, released early Thursday, show that the annual rate of births per 1,000 women of childbearing age was 1,765.5, or 16 percent below the number needed to keep the population stable without immigrants. The total fertility rate has been declining year on year since 2010, but the numbers for 2017 represent the biggest drop in recent history, NBC News reports. Experts say the decline is due to changing economics, delays in childbirth by women pursuing jobs and education, the greater availability of contraception, and a decline in teen pregnancies. “It may not be all doom and gloom,” said Donna Strobino, a professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. “I think it may stabilize once women who have been postponing pregnancy have the births they are planning to have.”
