Bastrop County Commissioner Bubba Snowden to be laid to rest Monday

Bastrop County Precinct 4 Commissioner Gary Lynn “Bubba” Snowden, 73, will be laid to rest Monday in Elgin after dying at his home on Thursday, three days into his new four-year term in office.

“It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of County Commissioner Bubba Snowden, late yesterday,” Pape said in a statement Friday. “He was a valuable and respected member of our Commissioners Court and the Bastrop County family.”

His cause of death has not yet been publicly released.

Snowden, who represented Elgin and the northwest portion of the county, was first elected to his seat in 2012. He won re-election to a third term in November, after defeating Republican Rosanna Abreo in the March primary and running unopposed in November.

In December 2017, Snowden was indicted by a Bastrop County grand jury on three counts of abuse of official capacity for using county property and personnel to resurface 0.8 miles of Wilbarger Creek Drive and put limestone base on Moon Brake Road, both private roads, “with the intent to obtain a benefit and harm and defraud another,” according to the indictment.

Bastrop County judge expected to make appointment to fill Bubba Snowden’s seat

Bubba Snowden’s unexpected death last week.

Snowden, 73, who served as commissioner for Precinct 4, died Jan. 3, just three days into his third term in office. County Judge Paul Pape is expected to make an appointment to fill the vacant seat but said he has decided to wait a beat before naming Snowden’s successor.

Snowden’s mid-term death is not the first to have happened in Bastrop County in recent history, according to county records. In those cases, the deceased officeholder’s spouse has been appointed to fill the seat until a successor is elected.

In 2011, Precinct 4 Commissioner Lee Dildy died while in office after 20 years of service. Former County Judge Ronnie McDonald appointed Dildy’s wife, Vivian, to that post. In 2001, Precinct 2 Commissioner Tam McKeown was appointed to that seat after her husband Charles McKeown died. In 1989, Elaine Seidel took the Precinct 2 commissioner’s seat after the death of her husband Robert Seidel. In 1985, when Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace O. B. Warnke died, his wife Katie Warnke was appointed to that seat. In 1964, the death of Precinct 1 Commissioner R. M. Wiley lead to the appointment of his wife Wilma Wiley.
