Earthā€™s magnetic field, the basis for modern global navigation systems, is constantly in some state of flux. However, it now seems to be going haywire, pushing the North Pole closer to Siberia, and no oneā€™s sure why.

The north magnetic pole sped across the International Date Line last year at a rate of 55 km per year, more than three times as fast as it moved before the mid-1990s. Now located in the Eastern Hemisphere, itā€™s moving away from Canada and approaching Siberia.

Scientists think a high-speed jet of liquid iron under Canada could be responsible for the poleā€™s movement, weakening the magnetic field below and allowing Siberia to draw over the pole, Nature reports.

ā€œThe location of the north magnetic pole appears to be governed by two large-scale patches of magnetic field, one beneath Canada and one beneath Siberia,ā€ University of Leeds geomagnetist Phil Livermore told a recent American Geophysical Union meeting. ā€œThe Siberian patch is winning the competition.ā€

In general, the World Magnetic Model (WMM) is updated at five-year intervals to ensure modern navigation keeps up with the changes in the Earthā€™s magnetic field. It was due to be reconfigured next in 2020, but was so out-of-whack by 2018 that a more urgent update was needed.Researchers at the British Geological Survey and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have been working to correct the WMM using three years of recent data, including a 2016 pulse that threw their last modelā€™s accuracy off.

The scientists were due to release the latest update next week ā€“ if the US government hadnā€™t shut down, hamstringing NOAAā€™s operations. Now the release has been postponed to the end of January. The team hopes this model lasts until 2020.

The Catholic Church must embrace homosexual kinship among the clergy, Philippines leader Rodrigo Duterte has said in his latest attack on the Vaticanā€¦ just after calling on the population to rob and even kill ā€œuselessā€ bishops.

Duterte, who has in the past openly revealed that he was sexually molested by a priest, once again criticized the Catholic Church on Thursday, this time for allegedly suppressing the widespread homosexual tendencies of its clergymen ā€“ and dared the ā€œsons of b****esā€ in the Vatican to abolish celibacy.

The Holy See had functioned just fine for over one thousand years before the Church adopted a policy of clerical celibacy at the Second Lateran Council in 1139. Duterte is an open supporter of same-sex unions who has even acknowledged fiddling with the notion of becoming a bisexual. He has repeatedly called on the Church to abolish the centuries-old canon law, suggesting that it only fuels homosexual tendencies among clergymen. Last month, Duterte boldly estimated that ā€œalmost 90 percentā€ of Catholic priests were homosexuals.

The revelations about UK government-funded propaganda outfit the Integrity Initiative are a ā€œreal scandalā€ and more questions need to be asked about its activities and motives, Labour MP Chris Williamson has told RT.

British media has been reluctant to cover the Anonymous leaks which exposed the Scotland-based organization in November 2018, revealing that it had used its hefty government funding to interfere in the domestic politics of other European countries and to engage in a smear campaign against Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn at home.

Speaking to RTā€™s Afshin Rattansi on Going Underground, Williamson said that the media might be hesitant to cover the leaks because they themselves are implicated.

One has to ask the question, therefore, is it because of their involvement that [journalists] are not covering this real scandal?

The leaks named a number of high-profile journalists, academics, politicians and military personnel, claiming they were part of special ā€˜clustersā€™ of influencers based in various countries around Europe. The documents showed that these so-called clusters are particularly interested in ensuring certain ā€˜narrativesā€™ about Russia remain prominent in the mainstream media

Poland Arrests Huawei Executive On Espionage Charges

Fri, 01/11/2019 - 06:08

In the latest sign that the US's western allies are heeding its warnings about the espionage threat posed by Huawei and its executives, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that Poland had arrested a Huawei executive based in the country and accused him of "conducting high-level espionage on behalf of a Chinese spy agency."

According to a source quoted by Reuters, the executive was well-known in local tech circles.

Officers from Poland's counterintelligence agency have searched Huawei's office, leaving with documents and electronic data. They also searched the executive's home on Tuesday.

The executive's name wasn't released. A Chinese national, he was identified only as a graduate of one of China's top intelligence colleges, as well as a former employee of the Chinese consulate in the port city of Gdansk.

But the Chinese national wasn't the only person arrested in the crackdown: Polish police also arrested a citizen who was identified as a former top official in the Polish intelligence agency's IT security department.

"Huawei is aware of the situation, and we are looking into it," a spokesman for the company said.

Both suspects have been charged with espionage, a crime that carries up to 10 yearsā€™ imprisonment. They have reportedly pleaded not guilty. The arrest comes little more than a month after Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Vancouver on charges of helping the company violate US and EU sanctions against Iran.

While little is known about this incident, we will be watching out for reports that Chinese authorities have arrested a handful of Polish nationals on vague "national security"-related violations.
