MIL-OSI Canada: Statement on International Anti-Corruption Day

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development, today issued the following statement:

“Corruption is one of the greatest obstacles to economic and social development. It stands in the way of strong foreign investment and trade, and decays the fabric of society.

“It breeds organized crime, contributes to inequality and has a disproportionate impact on marginalized populations and women. It leaves little room for democracy to flourish and for justice to prevail. Equally disturbing, it threatens human rights and endangers lives.

“All countries must take meaningful action to prevent corruption. When it occurs, they must ensure that it is appropriately investigated and prosecuted.

“The Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act gives Canada the ability to impose asset freezes and travel bans on individuals responsible for gross human rights violations and significant acts of corruption around the world. We have already imposed sanctions against 70 individuals under this act.

“Today, Canada reiterates its commitment to combat corruption, at home and abroad, in collaboration with other governments, the private sector and civil society actors.”

Xi Jinping calls for greater victory in anti-corruption

The general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Xi Jinping urged for the consolidation of the efforts in fighting corruption, an improved national inspection system and greater achievements in full and strict governance over the Party.

Xi made the call during a speech at the 3rd plenary session of the 19th CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection on Friday.

During his speech, Xi mentioned six directives in accelerating the country's anti-corruption campaign, including strengthening CPC party regulations, stepping up efforts in tackling corruption in the financial sector, and deepening reform in the country's inspection system.

Xi said party officials should hold oneself to party standards and avoid any corruptive behaviors, such as playing favorites or engaging in nepotism at the expense of public resources.

He added that the officials in the system for discipline inspection should always impose strong self-discipline and rid the team of any corruptive personnel.

China releases detailed 360-degree photo from the first mission to land on the far side of the moon

China has released a detailed panoramic image taken by the first-ever spacecraft to land on the half of the moon we can't see from Earth.

The mission, called Chang'e 4, touched down on the moon's far side ("dark side" is a misnomer) on January 3. The car-size lander and smaller rover it deployed, called Yutu-2, are designed to probe the region over the next six months.

Shortly after the lander and rover began their work, however, the China National Space Administration put the two spacecraft into a planned three-day "nap," as Space News reported. This helped the mission survive the equivalent of high noon on the moon, during which lunar surface temperatures can reach more than 240 degrees Fahrenheit.

California officer shot, killed; suspect found dead

A Davis officer was shot and killed Thursday night and the suspected gunman was found dead in a home, police said.

Natalie Corona, 22, was taken to the hospital, where she later died, Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel said.

The gunman was found dead early Friday morning. Police said it appears he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The shooting happened just before 7 p.m. Thursday near 5th and C streets in downtown Davis. Corona was shot while responding to a three-vehicle crash, police said.

"She passed despite lifesaving efforts that were provided by firefighters who were immediately there – the fire department is across the street," Pytel said.

Yellow vests protesters continue their roundabout fight

A roundabout next to the busiest of France's motorways has been transformed into a symbol of the yellow vest revolt — and the protesters camped out here for the past two months are digging in for the long haul.

With its makeshift grocery, camp beds and community spirit, the large central island about 60 kilometers north of Paris is home to dozens of yellow vest protesters who gather there day in, day out to organize their fight against the French government.

Like the reflective safety vests, occupied roundabouts have become a trademark of the protest movement shaking up France. Ahead of a ninth straight weekend of planned protests in Paris and across France, demonstrators in Senlis are adamant they are digging in for the long haul.

US official says troop withdrawal from Syria has started

After days of conflicting statements about a timeline for U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to pull out American troops from Syria, a U.S. military official said Friday that the withdrawal process has begun, declining to comment on specific timetables or movements.

Col. Sean Ryan, spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group, said "the process of our deliberate withdrawal from Syria" has started.

"Out of concern for operational security, we will not discuss specific timelines, locations or troops movements," the Baghdad-based official said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press.

Conservative MP Bob Zimmer said he's hoping to have a meeting of the International Grand Committee on Disinformation and ‘Fake News’ in Ottawa in late May

The international grand committee of elected officials that excoriated the absent Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg for his company’s recent issues with personal information could be coming to Canada this spring, the chair of Canada’s House of Commons privacy committee has revealed.

Conservative MP Bob Zimmer said while it is still in the planning stages, he’s hoping to have a meeting of the International Grand Committee on Disinformation and ‘Fake News’ in Ottawa in late May.

“We’re going to involve a little bit of Facebook, but we’re going to go a bit further,” said Zimmer. “We want to build on the legacy that was established in London.”

Man known as 'Catboy' is second Canadian suspected of working with drug lord El Chapo

Stephen Tello, 39, is serving a drugs sentence in Canada, but documents show he's suspected by the U.S. of trafficking with the biggest narco in the world

A drug trafficker known as “Cat” or “Catboy” is the second Canadian suspected of working with Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, whose landmark Brooklyn trial is ongoing.

Stephen Tello, 39, a former real estate agent who has lived in Montreal, Toronto and Kitchener, Ont., is serving an 11-year, eight-month sentence in Canada following a Nova Scotia RCMP drugs sting codenamed Operation Harrington.

However, court documents show he also faces a separate cocaine importation indictment in the U.S., which accuses him of trafficking with the Mexican kingpin for more than five years, from October 2008 to January 2014.

After the arrest of Toronto-based Mykhaylo Koretskyy, 43, in Curacao in January 2018, Tello is now the second Canadian firmly tied to Guzman’s Sinaloa Cartel which, even in its leader’s absence, runs enormous amounts of cocaine, meth and heroin into the U.S. and Canada.
