First responders say multiple people were killed and 17 were injured โ€” some critically โ€” after a double-decker OC Transpo bus crashed at the Westboro transit station in Ottawa on Friday afternoon.

The fatal collision occurred at 3:50 p.m, according to Ottawa police.

โ€œAs a result of the collision we have a number of injuries and some fatalities,โ€ Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau said at the scene around 6:15 p.m.

The bus appeared to have rammed into the shelter at the station located west of downtown Ottawa. Images taken at the scene show the front of the double-decker bus ripped off. Fire crews used ladders to get passengers off the top level of the bus.

City officials, police and other emergency services representatives are expected to provide further information at a 7 p.m. press conference at city hall on Friday.

The Ottawa Hospital confirmed at 6 p.m. that nine patients in critical condition have been admitted to the Civicโ€™s trauma centre following the crash in Westboro.

The Queensway Carleton Hospital tweeted that it has received one patient by ambulance and a few walk-in patients in connection with the collision and is expecting up to 10 more low-acuity patients.
