ALS is thankfully rare and therefore unlikely.

Progressive senile dementia is likely.

When the frail and elderly become ill, say from rib fractures, pneumonia is a fellow traveler. When sick on a vent from pneumonia there is associated stepwise decline that may occur with the sick never recovering to prior functionality.

Variable progression with other chronic disease states serving as modifying variables. If very severe COPD is an associated diagnosis for the patient it causes frequent illness and more rapid decline. Senile dementia is actually a wastebasket diagnosis and would better be named as dementia NOS (NOS= not otherwise specified). It is usually Alzheimer’s type, or vascular dementia. She likely wares gloves from either Raynaud’s disease or bad peripheral arterial disease.
