WASHINGTON—The words “humanitarian crisis” are constantly being used on both sides of the aisle during negotiations over border security and the government shutdown.

President Donald Trump says a humanitarian crisis exists due to a weak southern border, while congressional Democrat leaders have said the crisis is manufactured.

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) said the sheer number of people crossing the southwest border illegally—most of whom are families and children hoping to seek asylum—constitute a humanitarian crisis. In fiscal 2018, almost 400,000 people were apprehended by Border Patrol after illegally crossing the border.

“So it [asylum] has created a draw. And so when that happens, you have dead bodies all throughout the southern border. It’s really sad to see this. Not only that, but you have a third of the women being sexually assaulted,” Crenshaw told The Epoch Times.

Two-thirds of migrants traveling through Mexico report experiencing violence during their journey, including abduction, theft, extortion, torture, and rape, according to Doctors Without Borders (MSF), which has been providing medical and mental health care for migrants and refugees in Mexico since 2012.

Almost 1 in 3 women surveyed by MSF said they had been sexually abused during their journey—60 percent through rape.

Prominent Saudi-Backed Opposition Leader Ready To Visit Damascus And Cooperate On Establishing Tribal Force

Ahmad Jarba, a prominent leader of the Syria opposition, made a secret visit to Baghdad where he asked senior Iraqi officials to help him start talks with the Damascus government, the al-Mayadeen TV reported on January 12 citing Arab officials.

“Jarba is ready to send a delegation to Damascus in order to hold meetings with officials,” al-Mayadeen quoted one of the officials as saying.

According to the Lebanese TV channel, Jarba wants to work with Damascus to establish a tribal force, similar to the Iraqi Tribal Mobilization Units (TMU). The force, which will operate under the Syrian flag, will administrate the Arab areas in the northeastern part of the country following the upcoming withdrawal of U.S. forces.

Jarba, who leads the Syria’s Tomorrow Movement, is well-known for his strong ties to Egypt and Saudi Arabia. He also has strong influence among the Arab tribes in northeastern Syria.

Fearing Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham Revenge, Hundreds Of Turkish-Backed Militants Flee To Occupied Afrin

Around 1,000 fighters of the Ahrar al-Sham Movement and Jaysh al-Nasir have withdrawn from their positions in the opposition-held part of Hama countryside to the Turkish-occupied area of Afrin, the Syrian news outlet Enab Baladi reported on January 13.

Both the Ahrar al-Sham Movement and Jaysh al-Nasir are a part of the National Front for Liberation (NFL) coalition, which was formed last year after pressure from Turkey.

The pro-opposition outlet’s reporter said that another 1,700 Turkish-backed militants are preparing to withdraw to Afrin in the upcoming 24 hours. According to the report, the militants took this decision because they don’t trust Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which took over their positions recently.

“The fighters’ withdrawal from the region is a loss for the frontlines with Assad’s forces in northwestern Hama, HTS can’t fill the gap immediately,” the reporter said.

New Evidence Links UK RAF Pilot to 1961 UN Sec Gen Plane Crash Death

Investigators claim that a 1961 plane crash in Africa that resulted in the death of United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld and all else aboard may have been the result of a missile shot from another aircraft piloted by Belgian RAF member Jan van Risseghem, who was a mercenary pilot on behalf of Congolese rebels at the time.

Hammarskjold, a key post-World-War-II Swedish diplomat, and 15 others were killed when their plane came down in the jungle as it approached Ndola in what is now Zambia. Hammarskjold's plane crashed nine months after Patrice Lumumba, the left-wing prime minister of the Republic of Congo, was ousted and executed by forces backed by the US.

According to film-makers investigating the crash for "Cold Case Hammarskjöld" documentary, Van Risseghem, who died in 2007, admitted to to a friend that he had shot down the UN plane. In addition, the film-makers collected testimony from another pilot that weakens Van Risseghem's original alibis, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.

The documentary, which will premiere at the Sundance festival in Utah in two weeks, notes that the Belgian-born Van Risseghem trained with the Royal Air Force, the United Kingdom's aerial warfare branch, and that he flew missions over Nazi-occupied areas during this period.

The documentary asserts that In 1961, Van Risseghem, flying for separatist rebels in Congo, was ordered to shoot down the Hammarskjöld's plane, according to the Guardian.

Hammarskjold's plane crashed en-route to a summit at which he was attempting to negotiate a ceasefire in the mining-rich Katanga province, in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Katangese separatists at the time were supported by powerful Western political and mining interests who were not eager to see Hammarskjold's diplomacy succeed, according to the documentary.

Van Risseghem's flight logs previously showed no record of him flying during that particular month. However, Roger Bracco, another mercenary pilot for the Katangese, alleged to the filmmakers that Van Risseghem's log books looked forged.
