Why the Kurds matter in Trump’s withdrawal of U.S. forces from Syria

Kurdish fighters in northern and eastern Syria are suddenly looking to make friends with two rivals of the United States, after President Donald Trump decided to withdraw the U.S. troops who fought alongside the Kurds to secure the region against the Islamic State.
Amounting to about one quarter of Syria, the Kurdish-held area is the largest chunk of territory still outside the control of President Bashar al-Assad, who is backed by Russia and Iran.

Trump said on Jan. 2 the United States would withdraw slowly “over a period of time” and would protect the U.S.-backed Kurdish fighters as Washington withdraws troops, but without giving a timetable.
Trump vowed in a series of tweets on Sunday to “devastate Turkey economically if they hit the Kurds.” However, he also warned the Kurds against provoking Turkey
Syrian Kurdish leaders fear Turkey will use the withdrawal as an opportunity to launch an assault. Ankara views the U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish forces as terrorists aligned with insurgents inside Turkey.

As a result, the Kurds are in contact with Moscow and Damascus in the hope of making arrangements to protect the region from Turkey while also aiming to safeguard their political gains.
How did the Kurds emerge as a force?
The main Syrian Kurdish faction, the Democratic Union Party (PYD), began to establish a foothold in the north early in the war as government forces withdrew to put down the anti-Assad uprising elsewhere. An affiliated militia, the People’s Protection Units (YPG), secured the region.
Early in the conflict, their control was concentrated in three predominantly Kurdish regions home to roughly 2 million Kurds. Kurdish-led governing bodies were set up.
The area of YPG influence expanded as the YPG allied with the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State (IS), becoming the spearhead of a multi-ethnic militia, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
SDF influence widened to Manbij and Raqqa as IS was defeated in both. It has also reached deep into Deir al-Zor, where the SDF is still fighting IS.
Kurdish leaders say their aim is regional autonomy within a decentralized Syria, not independence.

Bomb-packed car blows up near high-security compound in Kabul
1 MIN READ
KABUL (Reuters) - A bomb-laden car blew up outside a high-security compound that is home to several international companies and charities in the Afghan capital Kabul on Monday, causing a number of casualties, security officials said.
An Afghan government security source said the blast occurred on Jalalabad Road in eastern Kabul near the Green Village compound, which has blast walls and security checkpoints.
Police spokesman Basir Mujahid said that a vehicle full of explosives had detonated. “The area is cordoned off…and search operation underway for suspects and attackers,” he said.
“It was a powerful car bomb that knocked (down) a wall between Green Village and the (adjacent) customs office,” a security source told Reuters. The attack caused at least several casualties who were taken to hospital, he said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombing. Green Village has come under Islamist militant attack in the past.

Elite French police on trial in alleged rape of Canadian tourist
Two elite police officers go on trial in Paris on Monday, five years after a Canadian tourist alleged they raped her at the judicial police’s prestigious headquarters in the heart of the French capital after a late-night encounter at a nearby pub.
It was a scandal that rocked the elite police unit at the centre of the allegations. Five years on, the officers’ trial will take place just steps from the alleged scene of the crime, in the courthouse adjacent to the storied 36, quai des Orfèvres, an address synonymous in France with popular crime fiction and the real-life home for more than a century to Paris’s judicial police, who investigate major crimes. Those offices, on the Ile de la Cité near Notre-Dame, were relocated to northern Paris in 2017.
On the night of April 22, 2014, Canadian tourist Emily Spanton made the acquaintance of a group of off-duty police officers at Le Galway, a quayside Irish pub across the Seine from the headquarters where they worked. After midnight, a pair of officers from the elite anti-gang brigade invited a heavily inebriated Spanton back to the office for a late-night tour. One of the policemen, Antoine Q., ferried the then-34-year-old over by car while a second, Nicolas R., joined them on foot.
The daughter of a Toronto police officer, Spanton would later tell investigators, “I had had a lot to drink. I couldn’t see myself going back to the hotel in that state and I thought that, going to a police station, I’d feel safer.” But the Canadian visitor would exit the building at around 2am in tears, barefoot and no longer wearing her tights, alleging she had been raped by four policemen, an account she later revised to at least three.

A senior Interior Ministry official said the explosion destroyed at least three checkpoints.
"Residential buildings nearby have sustained heavy damage and several private guards around the Green Village checkpoints were critically injured," the official said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombing. Green Village has come under Islamist militant attack in the past.
The latest attack comes as U.S. special peace envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad was touring the region for meetings aimed at bringing an end to the 17-year war in Afghanistan.
Last week, Taliban leaders called off a fourth round of talks with U.S. officials in Qatar due to an "agenda disagreement" and refused to allow what they called "puppet" Afghan government officials to join the talk.

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is going to Canada for hernia surgery

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, one of the fiercest political critics of socialized medicine, will travel to Canada later this month to get hernia surgery.
Paul, an ophthalmologist, said the operation is related to an injury sustained in 2017, when his neighbor, Rene Boucher, attacked him while he was mowing his lawn. The incident left Kentucky's junior senator with six broken ribs and a bruised lung.
He is scheduled to have the outpatient operation at the Shouldice Hernia Hospital in Thornhill, Ontario during the week of Jan. 21, according to documents from Paul's civil lawsuit against Boucher filed in Warren Circuit Court.

The procedure is estimated to cost anywhere from $5,000 to $8,000, according to court documents. MDsave.com lists a hernia repair costing between $4,000 and $8,000.
Shouldice Hernia Hospital markets itself as "the global leader in non-mesh hernia repair," according to the clinic's website.
Paul, a Republican, often argues for private market solutions to American's health care woes.
In Canada, medical care is publicly funded and universally provided through the country's Provincial Ministry of Health, and everyone receives the same level of care.
Paul has called universal health care and nationalized options "slavery."
“With regard to the idea whether or not you have a right to health care … It means you believe in slavery," Paul said in 2011. "You are going to enslave not only me but the janitor at my hospital, the person who cleans my office, the assistants, the nurses. … You are basically saying you believe in slavery.”
A spokesman for Paul did not immediately return a request for comment.
Last year, Boucher pleaded guilty to attacking Paul after they reached a breaking point over lawn maintenance.

Paul was mowing his yard on Nov. 3, 2017, at his home in Bowling Green when Boucher saw Paul stacking brush onto a pile near his property, according to court records.
Boucher "had enough," ran downhill toward Paul — who was wearing headphones and only noticed Boucher at the last second — and tackled him. A medical expert said the tackle is comparable to a chest trauma that would be seen in a 25-mile-per-hour car crash, according to a Jan. 11 court document filed by Paul's attorney.
Paul is suing for $4,000 in medical costs related to the attack but said the final amount "will continue to be updated through trial and will certainly include the hernia surgery that is currently scheduled to take place in Ontario, Canada."
A jury trial related to the case is scheduled for Jan. 28 in Bowling Green.
