Former Gov. John Kasich (R-Ohio) may be joining a major cable news network as early as this week, according to CNBC.
The business news network, citing unidentified sources close to Kasich, reported Monday that he has "signaled to close advisors and some donors that he is looking to sign with either CNN or MSNBC as he finishes his two-term tenure as Ohio’s governor."
"These people would not say the role Kasich will play at a network, only to say that he’s ruled out joining Fox News Channel," the sources added.
Kasich, who just signed with United Talent Agency, hosted "Heartland" on Fox News from 2001 to 2007. He also occasionally filled in for former host Bill O'Reilly on "The O'Reilly Factor."
The 66-year-old former congressman and House Budget Committee chairman is also weighing a bid for the presidency in 2020, when he could run as a Republican or independent. He has been a staunch critic of President Trump and was the last of the remaining 16 candidates to drop out of the 2016 Republican presidential primary before the real estate mogul captured the nomination.
“Any announcement about a TV contract would have no bearing on his 2020 intentions,” Kasich spokesman Chris Schrimpf told CNBC on Monday. “All options are still on the table.”
Kasich has often appeared on CNN and MSNBC in the past two years since Trump took office.
MSNBC declined comment on the CNBC report, and CNN has not responded to a request from The Hill.
