Pro-Brexit Govt Whip Resigns to Vote Against May’s EU Deal

The Prime Minister’s chances of getting her Brexit deal through Parliament have suffered another blow, as one of her own whips resigns his post to vote against it.

Gareth Johnson, the Brexit-supporting Member of Parliament for Dartford, has abandoned the May administration on the eve of the so-called “meaningful vote” on whether or not to accept the terms the EU has offered the Prime Minister, having struggled to “reconcile my duties as a Whip to assist the Government to implement the European Withdrawal Agreement, with my own personal objections to the agreement.”

The Tory MP is evidently unimpressed by the “clarifications” on the “backstop” arrangement included in the deal, which would see Great Britain locked into an ad hoc customs union for goods with the European Union, controlled by the bloc, and the British province of Northern Ireland essentially annexed to the EU Customs Union proper.

Indeed, the Prime Minister’s “deal” with the European Union does not actually establish a new relationship with the bloc, but merely rubber stamps the multi-billion “divorce bill” she has agreed to pay it and signs her country up to a years-long “transition” period in which it will effectively remain an EU member — but without any representation or voting rights in EU institutions.

The backstop comes into force if no “future partnership” is agreed during the transition, with Britain unable to terminate the backstop relationship without the EU’s consent.

“Along with nearly two-thirds of my constituents and a majority of the country, I supported ‘leave’ in the referendum as I wanted the UK to take back the sovereignty we had lost during our membership of the European Union,” Johnson recalled.

“Unfortunately, this agreement prevents us from taking back control and instead could leave us perpetually constrained by the European Union… We need to rediscover our confidence and belief in our country’s ability to stand tall in the world without the European Union overseeing and managing our future,” he concluded.

New York Immigration Group Spending $1 Million To Convince Lawmakers To Allow Driver’s Licenses For Illegal Immigrants

New York’s largest immigration advocacy group is looking to spend $1 million to convince lawmakers in the state to allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses as President Donald Trump cracks down on unlawful entry into the U.S.

The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) plans to increase its lobbying efforts and invest at minimum $1 million on TV, radio and targeted ads on social media, the New York Daily News reported Monday. This could be NYIC’s biggest campaign.

“Our goal is to target every single legislator in New York State,” NYIC Executive Director Steven Choi said, according to the NY Daily News.

Choi said allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses would make roads safer by decreasing the number of drivers without licenses. The policy would also help lower auto insurance costs for New Yorkers, though it is unclear how this would occur. Around 265,000 people would benefit from NYIC’s proposed initiative, the NY Daily News reported.

“If Gov. [Andrew] Cuomo is looking to protect immigrants from Donald Trump and his administration, as he says, this is the No. 1 policy we can adopt to do that,” Choi said, according to the NY Daily News.

Choi has criticized Trump for shutting down the government after Democrats and Republicans failed to compromise on putting $5 billion toward building a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“Trump’s tantrum over his ridiculous border wall clearly demonstrates that he is morally bankrupt and fiscally irresponsible,” Choi said in a press statement on Jan. 8.

Cuomo, a Democrat, has supported progressive policies on immigration including creating a DREAM Act for the state, which would allow children of illegal immigrants to receive state tuition aid for college. He has also pardoned illegal immigrants with criminal histories.

Twelve states, including California, Illinois and Maryland, offer driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

NYIC and the New York Department of Motor Vehicles did not immediately respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s requests for comment.

Hollywood Director Whines About His Children, Compares Them To Dogs. Some People Applaud. They Shouldn't.

Duncan Jones, director of good sci-fi films like "Moon" and bad ones like "Warcraft," decided that Twitter was the right forum to vent his deepest parental frustrations. In a pair of now viral tweets, Jones had this to say:

I have 2 kids. 2 1/2 years & 9 months old respectively. I’ll tell you something I never see anyone admit… they are exhausting, frustrating & life-destabilizing. They are rarely fun. Sure, smiles are great, hugs are lovely, but it’s HARD & not obviously a good choice in life.

This is where people feel compelled to say “i wouldn’t change it for the world!” But you know… Of course I’d reconsider! It’s exhausting! Its banal! It’s like looking after a dog you can’t housetrain. What it is, is that it is. & they are mine. Hopefully they turn out ok.

What's most concerning is the reaction these tweets provoked. In the 24 hours or so immediately after they were published, a sizable portion of the responses were entirely supportive and sympathetic. A bunch of parents decided to join the fray and register public complaints about their own children. Until saner voices joined the discussion, the thread was a long litany of unseemly parental bellyaching. And not just vague "parenting can be tough" type complaints, but much more specific and personal "my life is miserable and my kids are awful" type complaints.

Some in the media have also come out in defense of Jones. According to Rebecca Cox in Harpers Bazaar, the director's comments were "so very important" and "accurate." She insists that he ought to be "applauded" for sharing his perspective. Others have echoed this sentiment.

I'm not sure I can join in the standing ovation. As a parent of three kids — two five-year-olds and one two-year-old — I will offer the standard disclaimer that, yes, sure, parenting is a challenge. You don't get a ton of sleep, especially in the beginning. And there's a lot of crying and a lot of noise and someone is always asking for a snack. Things are generally expensive and exhausting and anxiety-inducing. Nobody thinks, and nobody would claim, that parenting is some kind of non-stop amusement park thrill ride. It is, sometimes, much more like the line to get on the thrill ride.

But "rarely fun"? Like "looking after a dog"? "Not obviously a good choice"? If you see parenting in those terms, it's because there's something wrong with you. That's a character defect, not a defect of parenting per se. The defect is easy enough to identify: selfishness. Also, immaturity.

If you rarely have fun with your kids, it's probably because you haven't yet learned how to find joy in things that don't revolve completely around yourself. Once you develop the ability to look beyond yourself just a bit, and push your own needs and desires just slightly towards the back burner for at least a few moments, it becomes extremely easy to have fun with kids. Especially small kids, who are hilarious, creative, and energetic.

NY bishop punished for refusing to allow gay marriage plans to appeal

Bishop William Love issued a ban on same-sex marriages despite the church's decision

An Episcopal Church bishop in New York who was punished for refusing to allow same-sex marriages in his diocese said he plans to appeal the church's decision.

Bishop William Love of the Episcopal Diocese of Albany was placed on a "Partial Restriction on Ministry" after he issued a ban on gay marriages in his congregations despite the National Church's Resolution B012, the Christian Post reported.

The resolution reaffirmed same-sex rites and called for all bishops to "make provision for all couples asking to be married in this church to have access to these liturgies," according to the Episcopal News Service. Conservative clergy would be allowed to recuse themselves from performing gay wedding ceremonies.

"During the period of this restriction, Bishop Love, acting individually, or as Bishop Diocesan, or in any other capacity, is forbidden from participating in any manner in the Church's disciplinary process in the Diocese of Albany in any matter regarding any member of the clergy that involves the issue of same-sex marriage," presiding Bishop Michael Curry, head of the Episcopal Church, said in a statement issued Friday.

"Nor shall he participate in any other matter that has or may have the effect of penalizing in any way any member of the clergy or laity or worshiping congregation of his diocese for their participation in the arrangements for or participation in a same-sex marriage in his diocese or elsewhere," Curry said.

Gay marriage was originally approved by the church in 2015.

What's the back story?

Last July, at the 79th General Convention, the church approved Resolution B012, which makes marriage available to gay couples in all dioceses, including those where bishops theologically object. Clergy would still be allowed to recuse themselves from performing same-sex weddings but they would also be required to call in another clergy member to provide support and perform the ceremony.

Rockefeller Foundation faces $1 billion lawsuit for infecting hundreds with Syphilis

Score one for justice: at the beginning of the year, a federal judge in Baltimore, Maryland said Johns Hopkins University, Big Pharma drugmaker Bristol-Myers Squibb, and the Rockefeller Foundation would face a $1 billion lawsuit over their roles in a 1940s U.S. government experiment that gave hundreds of Guatemalans syphilis.

The experiment, purportedly conducted to better understand the treatment and prevention of STDs- with a focus on the drug penicillin, was a secret until 2010 when it was accidentally discovered by a professor at Wellesley College in Massachusetts.

The lawsuit was first filed in 2018 and then dismissed but U.S. District Judge Marvin J. Garbis suggested the victims’ attorneys refile. However, to do so the families had to outline the events of the experiment “including how and when the victims were experimented on, as well as the way in which it impacted their spouses, children, and grandchildren.”1

“The stories shared in the lawsuit are disturbing at best, dividing the victims into six different categories: people who were infected as part of the experimentation, the estates of these original victims, spouses, first-generation descendants, subsequent generate descendants and other relatives of those who died as a result of the diseases contracted from the studies. At least one story from each category was shared in the complaint, showing just how vast the impact of this experiment currently reaches.”2

The lawsuit alleges that the experiment involved employees and board members from each of the organizations named and a U.S. surgeon general. However, while the U.S. government has apologized to Guatemala “…the private institutions have not and have fought this every step of the way.”3 (Johns Hopkins said, “We feel profound sympathy for the individuals and families impacted, and reiterate that this 1940’s study in Guatemala was funded and conducted by the U.S. Government, not by Johns Hopkins. We will continue to vigorously defend the lawsuit.”4)

The experiment is incredibly similar to the well-known Syphilis Study at Tuskegee- utterly disgusting and a crime against humanity. However, it has been suggested that in this case, many of the infected didn’t even realize what had happened until President Barack Obama’s public apology to the Guatemalan president.

Gone: More cases emerge of Saudi students vanishing while facing Oregon charges

In December 2014, a university student from Saudi Arabia was arrested in Monmouth and accused of raping a classmate after giving her marijuana and shots of Jack Daniel’s.

Bail was set at a half-million dollars. The judge ordered the student, Abdulaziz Al Duways, to turn over his passport to the private defense lawyer hired to represent him, according to court records and the Polk County District Attorney’s Office.

A few days later, an official from the Royal Consulate General of Saudi Arabia in Los Angeles posted bail.

Al Duways disappeared.

The case preceded a similar one recently reported by The Oregonian/OregonLive involving Abdulrahman Sameer Noorah. The Portland Community College student jumped bail in the hit-and-run death of a 15-year-old Portland girl and apparently fled with the Saudi Arabian government’s help, law enforcement officials said.

But the two disappearances aren’t the only ones involving Saudi students facing serious criminal charges in Oregon.

Supreme Court Rejects Challenge to President Trump’s Appointment of AG Whitaker

On Monday, the Supreme Court rejected a motion challenging President Trump’s appointment of Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker.

The appeal claimed Trump’s appointment of Whitaker was illegal and asked the court to replace Whitaker with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

The President appointed Matt Whitaker to Acting Attorney General under the Federal Vacancies Reform Act (FVRA) after Jeff Sessions resigned at Trump’s request in November.

The Democrats immediately attacked Whitaker and claimed his appointment violated federal law because it was done without consent of the Senate.

On Monday, the Supreme Court decided it is staying out of the dispute, reported ABC News.

President Trump’s nominee for Attorney General, Bill Barr (Mueller’s best friend) will be on Capitol Hill this Tuesday and Wednesday for his confirmation hearings.

Beamed Energy Propulsion / Beamed Laser Energy Propulsion Documents

Background

Beam-powered propulsion, also known as directed energy propulsion, is a class of aircraft or spacecraft propulsion that uses energy beamed to the spacecraft from a remote power plant to provide energy. The beam is typically either a microwave or a laser beam and it is either pulsed or continuous. A continuous beam lends itself to thermal rockets, photonic thrusters and light sails, whereas a pulsed beam lends itself to ablative thrusters and pulse detonation engines.

The rule of thumb that is usually quoted is that it takes a megawatt of power beamed to a vehicle per kg of payload while it is being accelerated to permit it to reach low earth orbit.

This technology is also part of the research aim of the “To The Stars Academy of Arts & Sciences“. I compiled the below documents to explore the research the U.S. Government and Military has already collected and what they have tested in regards to the technology.
