Pompeo: Trump Admin Will Help Iranian People Take ‘Control of Their Capital’

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia—Following meetings with top Saudi Arabian leaders in the country's capital on Monday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that one of the Trump administration's top regional goals is to "make sure that the Iranian people get control of their capital," a shot across the bow to a ruling regime that has spent billions to beef up its foreign military and terrorist operations.

Pompeo, speaking to reporters in Riyadh, said that the Trump administration's primary goal is to empower the Iranian people to rein in the ruling regime, which has spent a fortune on foreign wars and terror operations as its own people suffer from a collapsing economy.

While the administration has been careful to avoid characterizing its policy as regime change, it has become clear that it does supports efforts by the Iranian people to end Tehran's expansionist march across the region, particularly in Syria and Yemen. The administration also has stated that it opposes the hardline regime and would offer its support to opposition elements in the country.

"Our effort is to make sure that the Iranian people get control of their capital, and it becomes a nation that is normal and is not conducting terror campaigns that are unrivaled any place else in the world," Pompeo said.

This set of priorities was raised in private meetings between Pompeo, Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman.

Asked by the Washington Free Beacon if empowering the Iranian people amounts to a sort of passive backing for regime change in Tehran, officials made clear that the United States has no interest in taking the lead in such efforts. Rather, the Trump administration is working to build a coalition of Arab and European allies who can confront the Islamic Republic.

One piece of this effort includes convincing the Iranian people that their government's financing of terrorism and foreign wars is preventing ordinary citizens from seeing their country's economy rebound. U.S. and European economic sanctions, officials say, have decimated the Iranian economy and helped to stir popular protests across Iran.

"The end goal is to convince the Iranian people that America is serious about empowering them and creating opportunity for the Iranian people" to confront the regime about their anger over a foreign policy that spends billions on war and terror, Pompeo said in response to questions from the Free Beacon and other news outlets.

In Saudi Arabia, Pompeo pressed the issue of Iran's regional meddling and was met with what he characterized as great support.

The Government Shutdown Is Beginning To Cause Chaos For Defense Contractors

As the partial government shutdown continues into its third week, the defense industry trade group and at least one government contractor are warning that the stoppage is beginning to take its toll. Investors would do best to hold tight and weather the storm for now, though the ongoing fight can be viewed as a warning about uglier battles looming on the horizon.

Numerous federal agencies have been closed since Dec. 22 after Congress and the White House were unable to agree on a spending bill. The Pentagon was one of a number of agencies that already had its fiscal 2019 funding secured and has not been directly affected. That means we are unlikely to see a repeat of what happened when the entire government was shut down in 2013, when contractors crafted plans to furlough thousands of workers while the negotiations played out.

Still, the industry is feeling the pinch. The Aerospace Industries Association in a statement said that there are "ripple effects." For example, with the Departments of State and Commerce closed, contractors can't get export licenses needed for certain weapons sales and transfers.

In addition, research projects at NASA, the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and other agencies are stalled. Much of that research is a combination of in-house work and third-party contracts.

Overall, government contractors are estimated to be losing as much as $200 million per day due to the shutdown.

"Every day the shutdown lasts, the impacts grow and become more difficult and more expensive to fix," AIA CEO Eric Fanning said in the statement. "It's time to get these dedicated public servants back to work."

Uneven impact

Generally speaking, during a shutdown outside contractors working on specific projects can continue work to a point where civil servant participation becomes necessary. But the government services businesses that provide IT, consulting, and related work to a range of agencies, including those impacted by the shutdown, face the difficult choice of either continuing to pay their workers to sit home, or cutting off funds at the risk of losing employees.

For large contractors, such as Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) and Boeing, that have massive contracts with NASA and elsewhere, the work is likely complex enough that it can continue uninterrupted. Others, like Leidos Holdings (NYSE:LDOS) and General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), the two largest government IT vendors, should have enough scale and resources to ride out payment delays.

MASSIVE STRIKE: Over 30,000 Los Angeles Teachers Walk Out of Classrooms – Demand Higher Pay, Smaller Class Sizes

Over 30,000 Los Angeles public school teachers walked out of classrooms and joined the picket line as contract negotiations stalled on Monday.

The teachers wore rain coats and carried umbrellas to shield from the torrential downpour in Southern California.

The schools will remain open on Monday, according to LA district Superintendent Austin Beutner. Hundreds of substitute teachers were hired to fill in for those on the picket lines.

The Los Angeles teachers union is complaining about the 40+ students per classroom. The teachers are demanding smaller classrooms and higher salaries.

Perhaps the millions of illegal aliens living in Los Angeles, a sanctuary city, are causing the overflow in the classrooms? Just a hunch.

ABC news reported:

More than 30,000 public school teachers in Los Angeles, the nation’s second-largest school district, walked out of classrooms and formed picket lines on Monday in what their union president says is “the fight for the soul of public education.”

United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) said negotiations stalled and that the union didn’t receive a new contract proposal over the weekend, after a strike was delayed from Jan. 10because of potential court intervention.

“So here we are on a rainy day in the richest country in the world, in the richest state in the country, in a state as blue as it can be, in a city rife with millionaires, where teachers have to go on strike to get the basics for our students,” UTLA President Alex Caputo-Pearl told a group of boisterous educators outside John Marshall High School in the Los Feliz district of Los Angeles.

“Here we are in a fight for the soul of public education,” Caputo-Pearl, a Los Angeles teacher for 22 years, told ABC News early Monday morning. “The question is, do we starve our public neighborhood schools so that they are cut and privatized or do we reinvest in our public neighborhood schools for our students and for a thriving city? We are here to say from the picket lines of Los Angeles that we choose reinvestment.”
