Because libel laws. When dealing with public figures which NRA would classify under, you have to prove harm and you have to prove knowingly lied. AND in legal terms requires both. Hard to prove either in a satisfactory manner in 99% of cases.

They were chosen because they already have a reliability problem. They're trusted less than MSNBC even though they are worse. CNN was the obvious choice because they'll try to extend story not knowing they're setup and by time it's found out, all resources are moved to MSNBC.

It's a war of attrition for them now.
