HW Brands did a book titled First American or The First American a while back. it's a good read if you can get ahold of a copy.
Primarily about Ben Franklin, but there's a lot of background info/current events of the time referenced that gave a lot of insight into the founding and the war for independence.
YMMV, but I got a lot out of it.
