Iran fails to launch satellite into orbit after ignoring warnings from US

Iran‘s attempt to launch a satellite failed to reach orbit, the country’s telecommunications minister has said.

The rocket carrying the Payam satellite failed to reach the “necessary speed” in the third stage of its launch, Mohammad-Javad Azari Jahromi told Iranian state television.

Mr Jahromi said the rocket had successfully passed its first and second stages before developing problems in the third. He did not elaborate on what caused the rocket failure, but promised that Iranian scientists would continue their work.

It came after Iran ignored US warnings to avoid undertaking three planned rocket launches Washington said would violate a UN Security Council resolution because they use ballistic missile technology.

The US is concerned the long-range ballistic technology used to put satellites into orbit can also be used to launch missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

McCabe’s FBI Tried to Re-engage Christopher Steele After Comey Was Fired

Congressional testimony by DOJ official Bruce Ohr shows FBI went back to disgraced source between Comey’s firing and Mueller’s appointment

In the days following the firing of FBI Director James Comey by President Donald Trump, the FBI, under Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, sought to re-engage with former MI6 spy and author of the Steele dossier, Christopher Steele.

The FBI’s attempts to re-engage Steele, who had been fired by the FBI six months earlier for breaking protocol by talking to reporters, were soon thwarted by the appointment of special counsel Robert Mueller.

McCabe appears to have been blindsided by the appointment of Mueller, who was appointed as special counsel on May 17, 2017, the day after a meeting with Trump and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in the oval office.

It is delivering a new form of power…It sets the stage for draft legislation to be written by people who weren’t elected to do it.” In other words, the committee of appointees that this proposal forms will entirely circumvent the will of the American people.

Russia: Expect a national AI roadmap by midyear

Russia is adding details, deadlines, and dedicated funding to its draft national roadmap for the development of artificial intelligence technologies, and expects to release the final version in mid-year.

The roadmap “provides for the creation of a list of projects that will help identify and remove barriers to the development of end-to-end technologies, as well as predict the market demand for artificial intelligence in the country,” as state media put it in October 2018. Moreover, the new document will form a cornerstone of the larger Digital Technologies national program.

Already, it appears that Moscow is increasing the amount of money it intends to devote to AI R&D. In late 2017, the government was planning to spend about $419 million (28 billion rubles) by 2020. But last October brought a new version of the 2019-21 plan for Digital Technologies which appears to call for spending nearly twice that much: $287 million for leading research centers and start-ups, $145 million to develop products, services and platforms, and $287 million for technology “at the extreme degree of readiness.”

Russia’s interest in AI seems to have swung into a higher gear after September 2017, when President Vladimir Putin said that artificial intelligence is “humanity’s future” and that the country that masters it will “get to rule the world.” In March 2018, government officials held a conference to encourage cooperation on AI between private companies and organizations and various government agencies. Organized by the Ministry of Defense (MoD), Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Ministry of Education and Science, the event saw Defense Minister Shoigu call for public-private cooperation. Then-Defense Minister Borisov added that AI would help Russia prevail in cyberspace and win in information wars.

Hal Martin's defense says prosecutors have yet to provide essential evidence

Attorneys for Harold T. Martin III, the former U.S. National Security Agency contractor accused of perhaps the largest theft of government secrets in American history, said in a court filing that government prosecutors have not allowed access to evidence necessary to mount a sufficient defense.

The defense also said it is concerned about the government’s stated intention to provide “rolling supplements” to expert forensic reports, a tactic the defense says could result in their not knowing the “entire substance of reports until mere weeks, or perhaps days, before trial.”

Without access to evidence in question the defense would have no choice but to accept the government’s forensic analysis of the data taken from Martin’s Maryland home at face value, the defense said.

If there’s a gene for hubris, the 23andMe crew has certainly got it. Last Friday the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered the genetic-testing company immediately to stop selling its flagship product, its $99 “Personal Genome Service” kit. In response, the company cooed that its “relationship with the FDA is extremely important to us” and continued hawking its wares as if nothing had happened. Although the agency is right to sound a warning about 23andMe, it’s doing so for the wrong reasons.

At first, 23andMe seemed to angle its kit as a fun way to learn a little genetics using yourself as a test subject. (“Our goal is to connect you to the 23 paired volumes of your own genetic blueprint… bringing you personal insight into ancestry, genealogy, and inherited traits,” read the company’s website.) The FDA had little problem with the company telling you why you had dry ear wax (rs17822931) or whether you’re likely to sneeze when you look at a bright light (rs10427255).

“Green New Deal” pushed by Democrats would cost 3,600 times the price of a border wall

The up-and-coming Democratic Party has many ambitious plans for the country. First, they want a “Green New Deal” which would force the economy to run on 100 percent renewable energy. This multi-trillion-dollar plan would provide taxpayer-funded incentives for wind and solar, while shuttering American coal, oil, and steel independence.

The Democrat leaders of the House and Senate have voiced their concerns about the President’s proposed border wall, calling it outrageously expensive at a price tag of $5.7 billion. However, when it comes to spending money, these same Democrat leaders are all for a $2 trillion plan to dictate American energy production… and that’s just the initial cost (see the ten-year cost, below).

When comparing the spending proposals, the Democrats want to control energy in the U.S. and spend far more than what the President wants to spend on improving national security. This cost comparison is for year one only. When PJ Media calculated the cost of the “Green New Deal” over the course of ten years, the price tag was a stunning $18.26 trillion. Over the course of ten years, this wealth redistribution plan could fund Trump’s border wall 3,600 times over. Democrats believe that the cost savings of switching to green energy would offset the initial sticker shock. Examples of this could not be found, because many of the renewable energy incentives passed under former President Obama failed to translate to real world savings.

Transgender activists gearing up to rewrite Harvard Medical School’s curriculum

Comprehensive review’ of ‘assumptions or errors about sex and gender’

Harvard Medical School recently unveiled a project called the Sexual and Gender Minorities Health Equity Initiative styled as “a three-year plan to amend the core MD curriculum” to reflect recent beliefs about transgenderism and gender ideology. The program is meant to teach medical students how to “provide high-quality, holistic health care for sexual and gender minority patients of all ages.”

The new program seeks a broad overhaul of the medical school’s curriculum in order to eliminate “assumptions or errors about sex and gender, such as conflating sexual orientation with gender identity, presuming gender is immutable or treating heterosexuality as a default.”

“The plan encompasses curriculum reform, faculty development, continuous quality assessment and global dissemination, as well as increased efforts to recruit and support students, faculty and staff with interests or experience in [sexual and gender minority] health,” the announcement on Harvard Medical’s website reads.
