Trump Lauds Volkswagen’s $800 Million Expansion in US as ‘Big Win’

President Donald Trump lauded German automaker Volkswagen for choosing Chattanooga, Tennessee, 0n Jan. 15, as the company’s North American base for manufacturing electric vehicles.

Volkswagen’s U.S. expansion includes an investment of $800 million in the facility, which is poised to create 1,000 jobs at the plant and additional jobs at suppliers.

“Congratulations to Chattanooga and Tennessee on a job well done. A big win!” Trump said on Twitter, in part.

The Chattanooga plant is the first dedicated location in North America for the production of a vehicle using Volkswagen’s modular electric toolkit chassis or MEB. Electric Vehicle (EV) production at the site will begin in 2022, according to the automaker.

Dr. Herbert Diess, CEO of Volkswagen AG said that the move is vital for the companies’ expansion.

“The U.S. is one of the most important locations for us and producing electric cars in Chattanooga is a key part of our growth strategy in North America,” said Diess.

Manufacturing in the United States under the Trump administration has made historic gains. In early January, the manufacturing industry reported a net creation of 284,000 jobs in 2018, the best performance in the sector since 1997. Meanwhile, in December, the Labor Department said manufacturers added 32,000 jobs.

Trump has pledged to grow the manufacturing sector and has made it one of his top priorities in boosting the U.S. economy. Many of the new jobs added were in fields such as fabricated metals and electronics. In 2017, factories added 207,000 jobs, for a two-year total of 491,000.

Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam praised the automaker’s move, saying it would provide massive benefits to the state.

He also added that it would help them “build a pipeline of talent for years to come.”

Eric Holder: Citizenship Question On Census 'Threatens American Democracy'

Asking census recipients whether they're US citizens "threatens American democracy," at least according to former Attorney General Eric Holder.

On Tuesday, an Obama judge struck down the Trump administration's move to ask citizenship status on the census.

Holder responded to the news writing: "The Trump administration's scheme to rig the 2020 Census threatens American democracy and was struck down in court today. The fight is not over though - we must make sure that the Census in 2020 is done in a fair, scientific way."

According to Holder, asking citizenship status is "rigging" the census, "unfair," "unscientific" and "threatens American democracy."

Counting non-citizens on the census to artificially boost the representation of states like California and New York is "good for democracy," whereas counting actual citizens to boost the representation of states like Montana and North Carolina is "bad for democracy."

New Poll: 65 Percent of Americans Support Overturning Roe v. Wade

On Tuesday, the Knights of Columbus (KOC) and Marist Poll released a survey showing that almost two-thirds of Americans would like the Supreme Court to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, even if they would not advocate directly against the decision.

"Almost two-thirds, 65 percent, would like the Supreme Court to reinterpret Roe in a way that would functionally overturn it," Andrew Walther, KOC's communications and government affairs executive, told reporters on a call.

Rather than asking Americans whether they support or oppose Roe v. Wade, Marist and KOC asked about the ideal outcome of a reconsideration of the Court's original ruling. The poll asked respondents, "Which comes closest to your view of what the Supreme Court should do when it reconsiders Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling making abortion illegal in the United States?"

Most Americans either wanted the Court to make abortion illegal (16 percent) or to "allow states to make certain restrictions" (49 percent). Both of these outcomes would effectively overturn Roe v. Wade.

Less than a third of Americans (30 percent) said abortion should be "legal without restriction." Another 6 percent admitted they were unsure.

The KOC/Marist poll found that even though 55 percent of Americans identify as "pro-choice," strong majorities of Americans in each party would restrict abortion to the first three months of pregnancy, or to cases of rape and incest or to save the life of the mother.

A full 60 percent of Democrats, 92 percent of Republicans, and 72 percent of independents support this kind of abortion restriction.

The simple terms "pro-life" and "pro-choice" do not capture specific policy preferences or even larger views about whether or not a human fetus is life, Walther argued.

A majority of American adults (52 percent) agreed that life begins either at conception (42 percent) or in the first three months of pregnancy (10 percent). Only 19 percent said life begins when a fetus is viable outside the womb, and 13 percent said life begins when the baby is born.

When Americans were asked about the "scientific view of a human fetus," 56 percent said "it is a unique life," while only 35 percent said "it is part of a woman's body."

McConnell Holds the Line – Blocks House-Passed Bill to Reopen Government For SECOND TIME

It is day 25 of the partial government shutdown and McConnell is showing no signs of caving to the Democrats.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) continued to hold the line Tuesday and blocked a House-passed bill to reopen the government for the second time.

Democrat Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Ben Cardin (D-MD) once again tried to bring a House-passed bill to the Senate floor that would reopen the government.

These are the same two Democrat Senators who asked for consent to take up votes on House-passed spending bills last week, and once again McConnell shot them down.

“The solution to this is a negotiation between the one person in the country who can sign something into law, the president of the United States, and our Democratic colleagues,” McConnell said Tuesday.

According to Senate rules, any Senator can try to force a vote, but any Senator can also block them.

McConnell blocking the Democrat Senators from forcing a vote reaffirms his commitment that he will not allow a vote on a Democrat bill that the President won’t sign.

Thank you, Leader McConnell!

McConnell blasted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democrats from the Senate floor Tuesday, accusing them of “engaging in increasingly acrobatic contortions in order to dodge a serious conversation” about the urgent border crisis.

On Tuesday, the House defeated an interim spending bill to fund government through February 1st. The vote required 2/3 vote for passage and the vote was 237-187 — SIX GOP lawmakers voted ‘yea.’

According to Fox News reporter Chad Pergram, the six GOP lawmakers who voted ‘yea’ are: Hurd-TX, Herrera-Beutler-WA, Stefanik-NY, Fitzpatrick-PA, Smith-NJ- and Katko-NY.

Farage: MPs Engaged in ‘Betrayal of Greatest Democratic Exercise in Our History’

Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage has said that the political class ignoring the will of the people is a “complete betrayal of the greatest democratic exercise in the history of our nation.”

Calling out the establishment for attempting to frustrate Brexit, Mr Farage said on Jeremy Vine on 5 on Tuesday, “Let’s be clear: we didn’t just vote [to Leave the European Union] in a referendum — we backed it up in a General Election where 80 percent of people voted for parties that said they would honour the result of the referendum.”

“And then 500 MPs voted for Article 50… they are our elected representatives, they took the decision, and now they are trying to wriggle out of that,” the Brexiteer said, alluding to MPs attempting to suspend or even stop Brexit to avoid leaving on World Trade Organization (WTO) terms if Prime Minister Theresa May’s EU Withdrawal Agreement is voted down on Tuesday evening.

“Our political class cannot accept the idea that we become an independent country. They haven’t got the vision, they haven’t got the breadth, they haven’t got the imagination and clearly none of them are looking for the Channel and seeing what is happening in France right now — what’s happening in Italy right now,” he continued, in reference to the populist riots against French president Emmanuel Macron’s progressive reforms and the election of the populist-nationalist government in Italy — both representing a rejection of the globalist European Project.

“The European Union is about to go through a massive wholesale change. Here’s our chance to lead the way to a better Europe of sovereign countries working together.”

“It’s very simple,” Mr Farage explained. “We want to govern our own country. We want to make our own laws, control our own borders… it’s very simple.

“We didn’t vote for a series of deals, we voted to leave and Article 50 helped us in that because it gave us two ways of leaving — one was a withdrawal agreement and the other was on WTO terms and that is what 500 MPs voted for.

“What you are seeing in Parliament is a complete betrayal of the greatest democratic exercise in the history of our nation.”
