Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Cancels Public Appearance in Los Angeles Set for January 29

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has canceled a planned public appearance in Los Angeles set two weeks from now on January 29 due to her recuperating from lung cancer surgery. Ginsburg was scheduled to appear at the Skirball Center as part of a celebration of her career. An exhibit being shown at the center through March 10 is called “Notorius RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

The Skirball Center released a statement Tuesday evening that said, “Update: An Evening with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is CANCELED. The Justice regrets that she is unable to visit the Skirball on 1/29. She is curtailing travel and focusing on her work while recuperating from recent surgery. Thank you for your understanding.”

Ginsburg’s appearance had just been announced on December 20. That turned out to be the day before she had surgery to remove two cancerous nodules in her left lung. Ginsburg was released from the hospital four days later and has reportedly been working from home. Ginsburg has missed every session of the Supreme Court since hearings resumed last week following the holiday break.

Supreme Court PIO Kathy Arberg issued a statement Friday on Ginsburg’s status indicating Ginsburg is free of cancer following the surgery:

“Justice Ginsburg will continue to work from home next week and will participate in the consideration and decision of the cases on the basis of the briefs and the transcripts of oral arguments. Her recovery from surgery is on track. Post-surgery evaluation indicates no evidence of remaining disease, and no further treatment is required.”

Ginsburg has previously been successfully treated for colon and pancreatic cancer in 1999 and 2009, respectively. She broke three ribs in a fall at her Supreme Court office in November. Her absence from the Court this month marks the first time she has missed oral arguments since joining the court.

The 85-year-old Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1993 by President Bill Clinton. She is the oldest on the Court, however her fellow Associate Justice Clarence Thomas, 70, is currently the longest serving having been appointed in 1991 by President George H. W. Bush.

Venture Capital Investment in US Companies Hits a New Record

WASHINGTON—U.S. startups received a record-breaking amount of venture capital (VC) investment last year, surpassing the high-water mark set at the height of the dot-com boom in 2000.

Venture capitalists invested $130.9 billion across nearly 9,000 American companies last year, according to a report by PitchBook and National Venture Capital Association (NVCA).

The rise in VC investment was primarily fueled by an unprecedented level of mega-deals (valued at more than $100 million). These deals surged nearly 150 percent in value and 90 percent in number.

Capital invested into life sciences companies reached a decade high, and unicorns (startups valued at more than $1 billion) received the lion’s share, accounting for 34 percent of total VC investment.

The PitchBook-NVCA called 2018 a “truly exceptional year for the venture industry.”

“Looking ahead to 2019, it appears likely that the arms race of mega-deals into startups backed by a growing number of mega-funds will continue,” the report said.

VC exits, or successful conclusions of early-stage investments, also were strong last year, surpassing $120 billion for the first time since 2012.

The number of investments sold by venture capitalists was 864, equating to a 33 percent rise in terms of total exit value. Strong mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity and initial public offering (IPO) markets fueled VC exits, creating optimism in the venture capital industry.

“Despite the public market volatility and slight cooling of exit counts, 4th quarter posted one of the stronger recent quarters on an exit value basis,” said the report, adding that the number of VC-backed companies entering the public markets in 2018 was the highest in four years.

Meanwhile, strong M&A activity was mainly led by Microsoft’s $7.5 billion acquisition of GitHub, and Cisco’s $2.4 billion acquisition of Duo Security.

In some sectors, the IPO logjam broke in 2018, and several unicorns including Airbnb, Uber, and Lyft have indicated that they are planning to go public this year. Hence, investor sentiment surrounding big-ticket IPOs in the first half of 2019 suggests that the IPO window could stay open for at least the near future.

PANIC

Bill Maher: Trump Is a ‘Traitor’ — We ‘Have to Go Ahead’ with Impeachment

Tuesday on MSNBC’s “Hardball,” comedian Bill Maher said President Donald Trump is a “traitor” who must be impeached.

Maher said, “I’ve been using the word treason and traitor for the whole time he’s been in office and every guest I had on the show has been saying I was an alarmist and overstating the case. I hear those words used a lot more. That’s what it is. What is it when you’re plainly with the people who are not us? Didn’t we see that in Helsinki? Plainly he was saying given the choice I’d go with President Putin, ‘President Putin says he didn’t do it. I don’t know why he would?’ Can you imagine if Bush after 9/11 had stood on the it rubble and says, ‘Well, Bin Laden said he didn’t do it. I don’t know why he would have.'”

He continued, “I think what you have to understand about him is he’s this political narcissist. I think every article should begin President Trump who suffers from being a political narcissist and go on with the story. Because there is no difference in his mind, his sick mind between doing what is right for him and doing what is right the country. I don’t think he thinks in terms of whether he’s betraying anybody. There is no betraying. There is only what is right and good for Donald Trump. I don’t know how we get out of this except getting him out of office. I wasn’t necessarily for impeachment until recently but I think you have to go ahead and do it. I know it’s pretty hard to convict. If you don’t do it with him, where is the bar? And what sort of damage is he going to do for the next two years he is there in this office?”

He added, “I think the question for everybody is who’s side are you on? Are you on the FBI’s side. He’s got Republicans attacking the FBI and all our institutions. Are you with Trump, this one sick man? Or are you with the FBI? Are you with the rule of law? Are you with Donald Trump? Are you with judges, are you with everything we’ve basically built our country on? Or are you going to throw it away for this one guy? I want to know what the Republicans, those enablers, the Lindsey Graham’s are thinking? What are you lying to cover up for this guy and you don’t even know what you’re lying to cover up?”

Israeli Air Force Anti-Radiation Missiles

Anti-Radiation Missiles (ARMs) are guided air-to-ground (in some cases ground-ground) missiles with a passive radar-homing guidance system. They are used to defeat enemy radars, including air defense, counter-battery, or surveillance, and they can be used to strike ships equipped with radars. This article covers such weapons used by the Israeli Air Force.

The War of Attrition was ended by a ceasefire between Israel and Egypt at midnight of August 7/8, 1970. The ceasefire which was to last 3 months actually survived until the Yom Kippur War of 1973. Right after the ceasefire entered into force, Egypt moved its SAMs to the Suez Canal zone, which was a major violation of its terms. Israel wanted to react immediately, but the US exerted diplomatic pressure to prevent it. Among other things, the US promised to increase IAF capabilities, including against SAMs, allowing Israel to purchase several previously banned weapons systems. Among them, Israel obtained AGM-45A Shrike ARMs, the first of which arrived in 1971. The IAF named them Egrof (according to Jane’s—Egrov Barzel for AGM-45A, and Egrof Nehoshet for AGM-45B).

On September 17, 1971, an Egyptian S-75 (SA-2 Guideline) downed an Israeli Boeing 377 Stratocruiser (Anak) electronic surveillance aircraft over Sinai, 22 km east of the channel. Seven crew members perished. In retaliation, on September 18, 1971 the IAF launched 12 Ergof missiles against Egyptian radars. However, since Egyptians turned off their radars, only one of the missiles struck the concrete base of a radar installation, inflicting some damage. The remaining 11 missiles exploded at distances between 1 and 5km from their targets.

Shrike missiles were carried by Skyhawk attack planes, initially only the A-4E model. When Israel signed the agreement for the purchase of the first Skyhawks in 1966, the current production model was the Shrike-capable A-4F. However, the US refused to supply Israel with several weapons and equipment for this model, and instead created the special A-4N model which didn’t have the Shrike capability. A-4N entered IAF service in December 1967, and on February 18, 1971 IAF received the first used A-4Es, which entered the 116th ha-Kanaf ha-Meofef (Flying Wing) and the 110th Abirey ha-Tzafon (Northern Knights) squadrons. Israel later received A-4N (after 1973, A-4M Skyhawk II for Israel) and used A-4F (during the last days of Yom Kippur War and shortly afterwards). During Yom Kippur War, only the 115th ha-Drakon ha-Meofef (Flying Dragon) Squadron had A-4N, the A-4F arrived too late. Phantoms could also use Shrikes, but the division of labor between squadrons meant only Skyhawks used Shrikes, including after the war.

In simple terms: know the difference between Russian S-400 and S-500 anti-aircraft systems

MOSCOW, Russia – Military expert and retired colonel Viktor Baranets compared Russia’s new anti-aircraft defense systems and explained under what circumstances the military would opt for an S-400 or an S-500.

The difference in the use of S-400 and S-500 air defense systems for professionals is evident: the S-400 system is used for common tasks, while the S-500 is used to repel more global air strikes, explained the Colonel retired to the Russian portal Tsargrad.

According to Baranets, the S-400s are armed with only one type of missile designed to ward off specific enemy threats. The S-500s, in turn, are equipped with various types of missiles.

“There is a missile designed to repel an attack from a plane or a helicopter, and there is also a missile designed to destroy a sophisticated ballistic missile, a combined method,” he said.

“The S-400 detects an enemy target at a distance of 600 kilometers and is capable of knocking it down at about 400 kilometers. At the same time, the S-500 air defense system detects [targets] and overturns them at a distance of about 600 kilometers,” added Baranets.

Although there is little information on the S-500 system, it is known that the system will be able to attack targets at a height of 95-97 kilometers – unachievable to other existing systems. This means that the system will not only be able to shoot down cruise missiles and enemy aircraft, but also intercept ballistic missile warheads out of the atmosphere.

The S-400 anti-aircraft system is capable of knocking down stealth technology, cruise missiles and tactical-tactical-tactical ballistic missiles.

US military experts are once again discussing the promising Russian S-500 anti-aircraft missile system, alarmed by the lack of new information on the subject in Russian media, reports The National Interest.

The publisher, Mark Episkopos, begins with the fact that 2019 promises to be a successful year for Russian anti-aircraft missile systems. For example, in the near future the new S-350 Vityaz system, additional S-300V4 brigades and dozens of other modernized artillery systems should enter the Russian Army service.

Episkopos then lists some features of the S-500. In particular, the ability to use anti-ballistic missiles at a distance of 600 kilometers.

This represents 200 kilometers more than the reach of the S-400. The system is also capable of intercepting up to ten warheads flying at a speed of 6.5 kilometers per second.

“The S-500 is a coup against US prestige. Our system neutralizes US offensive weapons and outstrips all US-wide anti-aircraft missile systems,” said the Russian engineer.

As new U.S.-bound caravan grows to more than 2,000, Mexicans lash out

As a new caravan that began in Honduras and quickly swelled to an estimated 2,000 people made its way toward Mexico on Tuesday, Mexicans who live along the border towns that will likely be most affected took to the Internet to lash out against another wave of migrants.

“Work? Yes, there might be work for people who actually want to work, not for the lazy bums looking for entitlements,” said one commenter, with the screen name Azucena Santos, in Spanish on a YouTube page belonging to Shialeweb, who was recording the caravan. “Poor Mexicans, what’s in store for you!”

Juan Palomina remarked: “Now look, let’s see if whacko [Mexican President} Lopez Obrador mobilizes the Marines and keeps these idiots from coming to Mexico. Give them enough to eat, at least.”

Some urged the migrants not to be blindly optimistic.

“People of Honduras, all of you who are spinning these grand illusions and getting ready to come on this caravan and in any future others, before you leave your country, please inform yourself about how people who’ve already come on previous caravans are faring in Tijuana,” said Belem Gonzales.

“Mexico is just like your country,” Gonzales added. “There are many problems and needs, and you’re not going to be much better off than you were in Honduras. Please don’t trust these manipulative agitators who are encouraging you to risk everything for nothing.”

Luis Mendez was far more unwelcoming. “We do not want caravans of (emojis of rats). Fight conditions in your own country. You are not welcome here.”

By Tuesday afternoon, a caravan that started with about 500 people grew to about 2,000, according to a representative from the Honduras National Commission of Human Rights, which travels with the caravan.

Word of the caravan’s departure was out at least as far back as last week. The newspaper La Prensa, of Honduras, reported on Jan. 9 that a caravan was scheduled to leave from San Pedro Sula on Tuesday - though the first group left the evening before.

'Only positive solution': EU chiefs hint at 2nd referendum after May's Brexit deal defeat

Led by European Council president Donald Tusk, EU officials sensed an opportunity in the chaotic aftermath of Theresa May's humiliating Commons defeat, to suggest reversing the results of the 2016 Brexit referendum.

"If a deal is impossible, and no one wants no deal, then who will finally have the courage to say what the only positive solution is?" Tusk winked and nudged on his Twitter, to exclamations of "Remain!" from his audience.

The former Swedish foreign minister and current co-chair of the European Council on Foreign Relations, Carl Bildt, even has a date for a potential second referendum lined up, though after May's deal was rejected by a historic margin, it is not clear what question could be asked.

One of the most vocal advocates of ever-closer European integration, Europarliament Brexit coordinator Guy Verhofstadt, proposed a "new deeper comprehensive" relationship with the UK. He spoke to reporters outside a meeting in Strasbourg with Michel Barnier, the chief EU Brexit negotiator.

Barnier himself was less keen to dance on the embers of an agreement he himself helped create, telling the media that Brussels was still "determined to reach a deal," though he did notably retweet Tusk's message above.

EU commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker, who will step down from arguably the most senior European post later this year, merely chose to ramp up the pressure on May's embattled government.

Meanwhile, if the UK prime minister thinks that her failure to squeeze past a Brexit deal that included an EU-sanctioned and controlled backstop and a £39 billion "divorce settlement" would engender more concessions from Brussels, she is likely to be disappointed.
