as an aside, i generally find it most clear to talk about efficient causes of things. cuz thats what our time and culture accepts (thanks to Hume). course there will be some sense of causation (aristotle's final cause for instance) in which there were magic reasons for the killing. but the pharisees werent the types to be spending lots of time worrying over final causes. legal type thinking is going to be primarily around efficient causes. and the pharisees, with their fence around the law were the poster children for process driven law with no hint of an understanding of the spirit of the law.
