Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) sent a letter to President Donald Trump on Wednesday asking him to postpone the State of the Union Address to a Joint Session of Congress scheduled for January 29. Pelosi cited security concerns over the partial government shutdown.

Pelosi posted her letter to Trump on Twitter, saying, “Today, I wrote to @realDonaldTrump recommending that we delay the State of the Union until after government re-opens, as the @SecretService, the lead federal agency for #SOTU security, faces its 26th day without funding.” (Text version of letter below tweet.)

US to begin INF Treaty withdrawal from February 2, Washington confirms

The US will begin its withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty with Russia on February 1, Under Secretary of State for Arms Control Andrea Thompson has said.

The US’ unilateral withdrawal from the treaty - originally signed by the United States and Russia in 1987 - comes after negotiations in Geneva, Switzerland, fell through on Tuesday. Thompson claimed that Russia is in breach of the treaty, and that Moscow’s 9M729 rocket violates the terms of the agreement.

Under the agreement, signed by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, land-launched nuclear missiles with a range between 500 and 5,500km are banned. The Russian delegation at Geneva accused the US of “exacerbating the situation,” and Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told reporters that “Russia is strictly complying with the INF Treaty.”

In an interview published on Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia “has no interest in a new arms race” with the US, but warned the Trump administration against withdrawing from the treaty, saying “such a course will have the gravest consequences.”

Trump first threatened to pull out of the landmark agreement last October, telling reporters “we’ll have to develop those weapons.” Reacting to Trump’s announcement, Gorbachev issued a similar warning to Putin, calling Trump’s planned withdrawal a “dire threat to peace.”

US Ambassador to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchison said on Wednesday that Russia will have six months after the US withdrawal to prove compliance with the treaty, if Moscow wishes to preserve the agreement.

The INF treaty was penned at a time when the United States and Soviet Union were the world’s chief nuclear competitors. Speculation has risen that regardless of compliance issues, the Pentagon feet hamstrung by the terms of the treaty, which does not restrict rising powers like China.

As such, Russia suggested that rather than dropping the agreement, both sides could negotiate expanding it to include China, Iran, North Korea and other states thought to possess short- and intermediate-range missiles.

Donald Trump, Jr. slammed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for trying to get President Donald Trump to delay his State of the Union address as the government shutdown continues, in an exclusive statement to The Daily Caller.

“Speaker Pelosi is clearly attempting to block my father from giving his State of the Union speech, not because 20 percent of the government is shut down, but because she is terrified of him having another opportunity to speak directly to the American people about her party’s obstruction, unfiltered and without her friends in the media running interference for her,” Trump, Jr. said.

“Pelosi correctly recognizes that the more President Trump shines a spotlight on the very real human tragedies that occur because of her and her party’s open border policies, the more of a political loser it becomes for them,” Trump continued.

Pelosi wrote to Trump in a Wednesday morning letter that the “State of the Union address has never been delivered during a government shutdown,” adding, “Given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29th.”

Pelosi referenced the lack of pay to the U.S. Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security employees, and the possible effect on security surrounding the annual landmark event.

Trump was expected to discuss the shutdown in the State of the Union address and make a further pitch to the American people on the need for a border wall. Democrats and the White House are engaged in a high-stakes fight over border wall funding, with Democratic leaders saying they’ll only offer $1.6 billion, and Trump demanding $5.7 billion.

Trump Jr. has excoriated Pelosi in recent days for downplaying the threat of illegal immigration, urging the speaker to meet with mothers of children killed by illegal immigrants.

Israel killing of Palestine children in Gaza protests amounts to ‘war crimes’

Israeli forces have killed Palestinian children during protests in the occupied Gaza Strip in “conduct amounting to war crimes”, according to a report submitted to a United Nations inquiry by Defense for Children International-Palestine (DCIP) and the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law.

The 57-page report was given to investigators working as part of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on the 2018 protests in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT), established during a special session of the UN Human Rights Council in May 2018.

According to a statement released Tuesday, the DCIP-CUNY report “provides background and context to mass protests in Gaza, highlights Israeli forces’ unlawful killing of Palestinian child protesters, and details serious violations of international law by Israeli forces”.

Of the 56 Palestinian children killed by Israeli forces and settlers in the OPT during 2018, the report states, “a total of 44 children were killed in the Gaza Strip”.

“In the overwhelming majority of cases, DCIP was able to confirm children did not present any imminent, mortal threat or threat of serious injury when killed by Israeli forces”, the statement added.

The report concludes “Israeli forces and officials are responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity and other serious violations of international law for the killing of Palestinian child protesters in Gaza”, the statement concluded.

“Israeli armed forces have regularly been implicated in widespread and systematic human rights violations against Palestinian children, yet systemic impunity is the norm,” said Brad Parker, Senior Adviser, Policy and Advocacy at DCIP.

“The Commissioners must pursue accountability by analysing alleged violations of international criminal law falling within the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court and naming perpetrators”.
