The born again Christian you are responding to is correct, imho. When you stray from the literal plain common sense meaning of the bible, you stray from God. If the bible intends you to understand it via simile, or metaphor, or parable, or symbolically, it will provide that context, explain that parable, and describe those symbols. Without the Holy Spirit, no "theologian" can understand the Word of God, no matter how long they try.

Jesus is in the entire bible; he spoke the universe into existence, walked with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, wrestled with Jacob, and went into the fiery furnace with Meschach, Shadrach and Abednego.
But Jesus is revealed in the New Testament, where he is only anticipated as the coming messiah in the Old.
