I was dreaming the other day, (clearly since I have no idea how one would go about doing such a thing other than to know it could be done). Well I could too I suppose, but there are quicker minds than mine is at my age, but man was I fast when I was younger. Employer said in a reference, everytime I promoted out of a position, it would take them 1 1/2 or 2 people to replace the quantity with quality work as was able to produce.. Even had the CEO tell me I had more wind in my sails than any of his other 350 staff. I digress

Russian MiG-31 jets ‘fight’ in stratosphere at supersonic speeds (VIDEO)

Published time: 17 Jan, 2019 10:18

A pair of Russian MiG-31 fighter jets engaged in a very high-speed chase – supersonic, actually – to intercept an “intruder” violating airspace, a newly released video of stratosphere drills shows.

The exercise took place in the central Russian region of Perm, the Central Military District’s press service said Thursday. The fighter unit is equipped with MiG-31BMs – the latest variant of the iconic long-range fighter jets.

The video, released by Zvezda TV channel, features the planes taking off and landing back at the airfield. The “fight” itself was not captured – which is not surprising, given extreme speeds, as well as large distances between the opposing parties.

“The crews have flown at supersonic speeds of over 2,800km/h (1740mph) at the altitude of 18,000 meters,” the press service said.

One MiG-31 impersonated an intruder, which had penetrated Russian airspace during a surveillance mission and tried to dodge air defenses. A pair of MiG-31s were scrambled to chase and intercept the violator.

The MiG-31 has been in service since the 1980s, and it has received several upgrades over the years. The MiG-31BM variant has an upgraded radar and fire control systems, which significantly boosts the plane’s capability to detect and track hostile aircraft.

Scientists return from Antarctica, face rough voyage across Drake Passage

efe-epaDrake Passage17 Jan 2019

A group of female scientists set to return to a port in South America following a week-long expedition to Antarctica were on Thursday preparing to cross Drake Passage, the body of water dividing the two continents that is known for its rough and unpredictable conditions.

It was the 17th day of the trip, and the 80 scientists and crew were gearing up to cross the Sea of Hoces, but the force of the waves they would encounter would not be known until the vessel was actually journeying across the Passage.

German law enforcement has conducted a nation-wide operation against a far-right group, seizing weapons and Nazi-themed memorabilia from its members. Around 40 people are under investigation, police confirmed.

Around 200 police officers, including special ops, took part in the operation, searching 12 addresses across eight German states, prosecutors of Baden-Wurttemberg said on Wednesday. Law enforcement targeted a far-right group which calls itself the National Socialist Knights of the Ku Klux Klan Deutschland.

“The members are united in their right-wing orientation, which includes a glorification of National Socialism,” investigators stated.

A cache of Nazi-themed memorabilia and around 100 weapons were seized, including gas pistols with ammunition, airsoft guns, various knives, swords, slingshots, and even throwing stars. Apart from that, police confiscated computers and digital storage devices, as well as documents, to further dig into the group’s organization and size.

The operation targeted 17 suspects aged between 17 and 59, though the whole investigation involves 40 individuals from all across Germany. No arrests have been made so far, according to local media, citing prosecutors.

The group was apparently well-organized and tried to keep its activities secret.

Members preferred to communicate via social media, recruiting new members online. The Knights’ members have been paying monthly fees to finance the group’s activities, it is said. At this point, however, there is no data on links to other KKK organizations.

The Ku Klux Klan – a white supremacist organization originating in the US – has been active in Germany since the 1920s. In the past, US Klan leaders visited the country, taking part in events staged by local chapters.

Currently, the German KKK is believed to be small in number and largely marginalized, yet a handful of minor chapters still operate. So far, investigators have not uncovered any links between the Knights and other KKK-related groups abroad.

Powerful blast at Russian chemical plant caught on VIDEO

Published time: 17 Jan, 2019 11:21

A powerful explosion has rocked a chemical plant near St. Petersburg. The blast leveled the two-story building and injured five workers.

Russia’s Investigative Committee released a video of the incident, which occurred at a concrete admixtures producing plant on Wednesday. The blast turned out to be massive indeed, yet luckily no one was killed.

Footage shows the small building on fire moments before the blast. A group of workers and a small tractor remained right in front of it despite the blaze. The explosion was preceded by a thick cloud of smoke being emitted from the building.

Luckily, the plume looked scary enough to send the workers running for their lives and the tractor’s driver accelerating hard to escape. Yet, five people were caught by the blast, which threw them to the ground. All of them were injured by the building’s debris.

The video indicates that the blast leveled at least a half of the building, leaving only a fiery foundation. According to the Investigative Committee, the blast was likely caused by negligence during repair works – a spark from an angle grinder got onto the admixtures storage and they caught fire.

[Twitter video of explosion WOW. there were guys walking around, some walking toward building while others we're distancing themselves, wondering what the smoke was, then BOOM!

Stacks of cash for bribes were often moved around Bosasa office - Agrizzi

2019-01-17 13:56

Jeanette Chabalala

A video clip played before the commission of inquiry into allegations of state capture on Thursday morning has laid bare how stacks of cash used for "bribes" were moved around at Bosasa headquarters.

In the video clip, which was apparently taken in 2017, and submitted by former Bosasa top boss Angelo Agrizzi as evidence to the commission - former Bosasa CFO Andries van Tonder is seen taking a box allegedly filled with money from one vault to another.

LIVE: 'Every single contract was tainted with bribes' - Agrizzi testifies #StateCaptureInquiry

The box is taken from a secretary's vault and moved to Bosasa CEO Gavin Watson's vault.

The video then shows Watson seated at his desk, and next to him is Bosasa's Joe Gumede.

Bosasa spokesperson Papa Leshabane also appears in the video and appears to be on his cellphone. Watson appears sitting in his vault, counting and dispensing cash.

LIVE ANALYSIS | #StateCaptureInquiry: Unpacking Agrizzi's testimony

Agrizzi also said that, in the video, Gumede is speaking with Watson in English and Leshabane is on his cellphone, speaking either Xhosa or Tswana.

Agrizzi mentioned Gumede in his first day of testimony on Wednesday.

He said, after Bosasa was awarded a contract by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) for handling the multi-storey parkade at OR Tambo International Airport, he often accompanied Gumede, who was a director at Bosasa, on official business.

'I knew what was in those bags'

Agrizzi added that, during these visits, they had met with other individuals from ACSA and that Gumede would hand them grey security bags that allegedly contained money.

"Grey plastic bags were handed to these and other officials at ACSA. The plastic bags were security bags, tamper-proof seals - in this case, not translucent. Cash would be packed in those bags and given to people," Agrizzi told the commission.

Asked if the money was not always visible, Agrizzi said the "way it was packed, you could see it was cash".

The Chinese Foreign Ministry says mutual ties between China and Russia serve as a model for relations for all states

BEIJING, January 17. / TASS /. Mutual ties between China and Russia serve as a model for relations for all states. This is what Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Hua Chunying, said during Thursday’s briefing, commenting on the statements made by Russian Foreign Ministry chief, Sergey Lavrov.

"Sino-Russian ties serve as a model for relations between countries in the international community. We have no limits to cultivating our friendship and expanding cooperation," the diplomat said.

We appreciate the positive remarks made by Sergey Lavrov regarding Chinese-Russian relations. Under the strategic leadership of [China’s] Secretary General Xi Jinping and President [of Russia Vladimir] Putin our bilateral relationship significantly progressed in all spheres in 2018," the spokesperson stressed.

She added that 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Chinese-Russian relations. "The past 70 years have shown that our relationship has reached a high level of development. Qatar donates 68 armored vehicles to Somalia as UAE’s role is strained

Published time: 17 Jan, 2019 11:54

Qatar donated 68 armored vehicles to Somalia on Thursday, Qatar’s Defense Ministry said. The armored vehicles, delivered in Mogadishu, will strengthen the Somali state, which is battling an Islamist insurgency, according to Qatar’s military. The move is also seen as a sign that Doha is pushing for influence in the country with the role of its Gulf rival, the United Arab Emirates, under strain, Reuters reports. Somalia, a Horn of Africa country located on key shipping routes, has refused to take sides in the rift between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, a UAE ally. However, relations with the UAE have become strained over the UAE’s investments in the breakaway region of Somaliland. In April, Somalia disbanded a UAE program to train some of its troops.

Incoming Pakistan Chief Justice opens new era for powerful court

Saad Sayeed

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan swears in a new chief justice on Friday, opening the next chapter for the Supreme Court which has made a name for an expansive agenda that has ranged from ousting a prime minister to pressing authorities to improve the public water supply.

Outgoing Chief Justice Saqib Nisar cultivated a high profile, launching multiple inquiries aimed at reforming public institutions and going after political leaders, attracting both praise for cracking down on abuse and criticism that he was exceeding the court’s role.

His successor, Supreme Court judge Asif Saeed Khosa, has a taste for literary quotation but is otherwise considered a more classical judge, preferring to stay out of the limelight.

“I think Justice Khosa’s tenure will be substantially different,” said Saroop Ijaz, a lawyer for Human Rights Watch, who has been critical of Nisar’s activist court.

In one of its best-known judgments, the Supreme Court removed three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from office in July 2017 and ordered a corruption probe into his assets that led to Sharif being given a seven-year jail term in December.

The court enraged hardline Islamists last year by overturning the conviction of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman condemned to death for blasphemy against Islam.

But it has also used so-called “suo motu” provisions in Pakistani law that allow the court to open cases on its own initiative to set its stamp on wide swaths of public life and denounce the failure of public institutions.

It has ordered inquiries into issues ranging from payments to farmers by powerful sugar mills to milk prices, city water supplies and corruption allegations against managers of the railways and national airline PIA.

However the outgoing chief justice’s activism did little to drain the backlog of more than 40,000 cases at the Supreme Court and a staggering 1.9 million combined cases pending in other courts.

“It’s a highly problematic period at multiple levels,” said legal scholar Osama Siddique, an Associate Fellow at the Institute for Development and Economic Alternatives in Lahore.

“Justice Saqib Nisar’s entire emphasis was on other institutions and how they should improve their governance but he did not do anything to improve the governance and internal administration of the judiciary.”

CAUTIONARY TALE

Nisar’s high media profile has drawn parallels with Iftikhar Chaudhry, a chief justice who initially won plaudits for helping oust military dictator Pervez Musharraf in 2008, but was later criticized for overstepping his constitutional remit.

“Saqib Nisar’s tenure was in many ways a cautionary tale in unfettered judicial overreach,” said Ijaz. “It was unprecedented in the extent of its activism and disregard of formal legal procedures.”

Nisar himself has said his suo motu cases and frequent public appearances to inspect development projects and facilities such as schools and hospitals were aimed at protecting the poor.

Allies of Sharif say his assertiveness served the interests of Pakistan’s powerful military and hinted at a return to the past, when they say judges cut politicians down to size at the behest of the generals.

The military, which has ruled Pakistan for nearly half its history since independence in 1947, denies involvement in domestic politics.

But Sharif’s removal and the defeat of his PML-N party in elections last year led to the appointment as prime minister of Imran Khan, a cricketer-turned-politician seen by analysts and opposition politicians as close to the military.

The new Chief Justice, who will hold office for 11 months, has a tough task to reform Pakistan’s sluggish judiciary.

Khosa wrote the judgment that ousted Sharif, opening with an epigraph he took from “The Godfather”, Mario Puzo’s bestselling novel on the mafia: “Behind every great fortune there is a crime.”

But literary flourishes apart, Ijaz said his record suggested he would adopt a much lower profile than his interventionist predecessor.

“Khosa has in the past written strongly worded judgments (and) has never shown a desire for publicity… The hope is that he will continue on that theme and work towards reform, starting with the judiciary itself.”

Agencies recall employees, shutter more functions as shutdown lingers: Jory Heckman

January 17, 2019 7:36 am

As the partial government shutdown stretches into uncharted territory, agencies previously unaffected by the lapse in funding now find themselves either reopening services that have been unavailable since Dec. 22 or shuttered offices that had previously been unaffected by the shutdown.

The shutdown entered its 25th day Wednesday, breaking the previous record for the longest U.S. government shutdown in history.

Between December 1995 and January 1996, agencies had only closed for 21 days in total.

USDA temporarily reopens Farm Service Agency

The Agriculture Department plans to have about 2,500 employees temporarily reopen about half of the Farm Service Agency’s offices Jan. 17 through Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Insight by Lookout: Federal security and IT practitioners examine the state of mobile cybersecurity in this exclusive executive briefing.

Once reopen, agency staff will help farmers and ranchers process existing farm loans, as well as give them their 1099 tax documents in time for the start of this year’s tax filing season.

“Until Congress sends President Trump an appropriations bill in the form that he will sign, we are doing our best to minimize the impact of the partial federal funding lapse on America’s agricultural producers,” USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue said in a statement Wednesday. “We are bringing back part of our FSA team to help producers with existing farm loans. Meanwhile, we continue to examine our legal authorities to ensure we are providing services to our customers to the greatest extent possible during the shutdown.”

The Federal Aviation Administration will bring back nearly all of its aviation safety inspectors by the end of this week.

An agency spokesman told the Associated Press that FAA will bring 2,200 inspectors back on the job in the coming days. That’s in addition to the 500 inspectors the FAA brought back to work last week. The agency has more than 3,000 inspectors as part of its workforce.

According to the Transportation Department’s contingency plan, which it updated Monday, more than 30,000 FAA employees will be working by the end of the week.
