Jobless Claims Fall Amid Shutdown Showdown

The number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits fell last week, but claims filed by federal employees jumped due to the partial shutdown of the federal government.

Initial jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs across the U.S., fell by 3,000 to a seasonally adjusted 213,000 in the week ended January 12, the Labor Department said Thursday. That is up from 216,000 reported a week earlier. Economists had forecast 221,000 jobless claims.

A year ago, there were 226,000 new applications for unemployment in the second week of January.

Those figures reflect claims filed under regular state programs. The lower than expected number for the past week indicates that private contractors working for the federal government, many of whom are not working during the shutdown, are not piling into unemployment benefits

Taking the art of fake news to new heights, a non-profit has circulated mock Washington Post issues near the White House, telling readers that President Donald Trump fled to Crimea on the back of women-led protests.

Activists giving out fake copies of the Washington Post commuters were spotted near the White House on Wednesday morning. Vigilant readers immediately alerted the newspaper, which said that the copies, dated May 1, 2019, were “not Post products” and that it was “looking into this.”

The fake copies include an eye-catching headline for the lead story: “UNPRESIDENTED. Ending Crisis, Trump Hastily Departs White House,” complete with a picture of a glum Trump on his way to “slip in a private car in the wee hours of the morning.”

There are fake print editions of The Washington Post being distributed around downtown DC, and we are aware of a website attempting to mimic The Post’s. They are not Post products, and we are looking into this.

The paper “reports” that Trump abruptly left his office at 3:15am on May 1, leaving a message on a napkin in the Oval Office that blamed “crooked Hillary,” the mysterious “Hfior,” and “the Fake News Media” for his flight. The report, meticulously mimicking the Washington Post’s source-based reporting style, cites “four White House aides” speaking on condition of anonymity, that they found the napkin two days before events took a dramatic turn.Trump’s fictional resignation and the subsequent swearing-in of Vice President Mike Pence, who instantly promises to keep as low a profile as possible, comes amidst “massive protests” staged by a grassroots movement with #MeToo as its backbone

Maddow and Sally show have a lot in common

When you think of daytime talk shows today, the first ones that probably pop into your head are Ellen or Oprah. They may be two of the biggest today, but if it weren't for Sally the two might not have existed. Hosted by Sally Jessy Raphael, the issue driven talk show was the first of its kind to be hosted by a woman with audience participation. The show ran from 1983-2002, but it changed formats in its later years to more bombastic tabloid subject matter- something that Raphael regrets to this day.

Twitter Sends Pamela Geller Notice to “Consult Legal” for Violating Pakistani Law — Pamela Geller to Twitter Legal: “Kiss my Free A**”

In December Twitter legal issued TGP’s Associate Editor, Cristina Laila a warning that she violated Pakistan’s blasphemy laws over a tweet wherein she called for burkas to be banned in the United States.

The specific Pakistani blasphemy laws Cristina violated are punishable by life imprisonment or death and Twitter happily delivered the threat to her.

Twitter, an American company, warned an American citizen who was exercising their First Amendment rights about Pakistan’s Islamic blasphemy laws.

In a years-old, since deleted tweet, Cristina called for the burka to be banned; this offended the Pakistani government enough to force Twitter to spring into action — even though the year-old tweet had been deleted.

Jamie Glazov, a Canadian columnist and critic of Islam received the same warning from Twitter after he tweeted out his new book “Jihadist Psychopath.”

How Gun Control Became an Instrument of Tyranny in Venezuela

Is Venezuela paying the price for adopting gun control?

The shocking nature of Venezuela’s economic collapse has been covered ad nauseam. However, one aspect of the Venezuelan crisis that does not receive much coverage is the country’s gun control regime.

Fox News recently published an excellent article highlighting Venezuelan citizens’ regret over the gun control policies the Venezuelan government has implemented since 2012. Naturally, this regret is warranted. The Venezuelan government is among the most tyrannical in the world, with a proven track record of violating basic civil liberties such as free speech, debasing its national currency, confiscating private property, and creating economic controls that destroy the country’s productivity.

Elections have proven to be useless, as they’ve been mired with corruption and charges of government tampering. For many, taking up arms is the only option left for the country to shake off its tyrannical government. However, the Venezuelan government has done well to prevent an uprising by passing draconian gun control which will be detailed below.
