Oklahoma data leak: 7 years of FBI data, corporate info, SSNs & names of AIDS patients exposed

A trove of unprotected data including FBI investigations into corporations like AT&T, Goldman Sachs, and Lehman Brothers, along with personal information, has been exposed in a data leak by the Oklahoma Securities Commission.

Three terabytes of data – millions of files – were left on a server with no password protection, freely available to anyone who stumbled across them, according to cybersecurity researchers Greg Pollock and Chris Vickery at cybersecurity firm UpGuard.

The files belonged to the Oklahoma Securities Commission, the government agency that regulates all financial securities business in the state. Among them were FBI files dating back seven years, covering cases open since the 1980s.

These documents included spreadsheets, interviews with witnesses, bank records, and emails and letters from agents, witnesses, and subjects. Major companies involved with these cases included AT&T, Goldman Sachs, and Lehman Brothers.

Personal information on around ten thousand brokers was also exposed, including their social security numbers. Life insurance information, including names of AIDS patient and T cell counts was also revealed.

Amnesty International’s Troubling Collaboration with UK & US Intelligence

Amnesty International, the eminent human-rights non-governmental organization, is widely known for its advocacy in that realm. It produces reports critical of the Israeli occupation in Palestine and the Saudi-led war on Yemen. But it also publishes a steady flow of indictments against countries that don’t play ball with Washington — countries like Iran, China, Venezuela, Nicaragua, North Korea and more. Those reports amplify the drumbeat for a “humanitarian” intervention in those nations.

Amnesty’s stellar image as a global defender of human rights runs counter to its early days when the British Foreign Office was believed to be censoring reports critical of the British empire. Peter Benenson, the co-founder of Amnesty, had deep ties to the British Foreign Office and Colonial Office while another co-founder, Luis Kutner, informed the FBI of a gun cache at Black Panther leader Fred Hampton’s home weeks before he was killed by the Bureau in a gun raid.

These troubling connections contradict Amnesty’s image as a benevolent defender of human rights and reveal key figures at the organization during its early years to be less concerned with human dignity and more concerned with the dignity of the United States and United Kingdom’s image in the world.

A conflicted beginning

Amnesty’s Benenson, an avowed anti-communist, hailed from a military intelligence background. He pledged that Amnesty would be independent of government influence and would represent prisoners in the East, West, and global South alike.

But during the 1960s the U.K. was withdrawing from its colonies and the Foreign Office and Colonial Office were hungry for information from human-rights activists about the situations on the ground. In 1963, the Foreign Office instructed its operatives abroad to provide “discreet support” for Amnesty’s campaigns.

Also that year, Benenson wrote to Colonial Office Minister Lord Lansdowne a proposal to prop up a “refugee counsellor” on the border of present-day Botswana and apartheid South Africa. That counsel was to assist refugees only, and explicitly avoid aiding anti-apartheid activists. “Communist influence should not be allowed to spread in this part of Africa, and in the present delicate situation, Amnesty International would wish to support Her Majesty’s Government in any such policy,” Benenson wrote. The next year, Amnesty ceased its support for anti-apartheid icon and the first president of a free South Africa, Nelson Mandela.

The following year, in 1964, Benenson enlisted the Foreign Office’s assistance in obtaining a visa to Haiti. The Foreign Office secured the visa and wrote to its Haiti representative Alan Elgar saying it “support[ed] the aims of Amnesty International.” There, Benenson went undercover as a painter, as Minister of State Walter Padley told him prior to his departure that “We shall have to be a little careful not to give the Haitians the impression that your visit is actually sponsored by Her Majesty’s Government.”

The New York Times exposed the ruse, leading some officials to claim ignorance; Elgar, for example, said he was “shocked by Benenson’s antics.” Benenson apologized to Minister Padley, saying “I really do not know why the New York Times, which is generally a responsible newspaper, should be doing this sort of thing over Haiti.”

Fewer Americans Ask for Unemployment Benefits, Surprising Economists

Fewer Americans signed up for unemployment benefits in the week ending Jan. 12, surprising economists who predicted an increase.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits decreased 3,000 to a seasonally adjusted 213,000, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) stated on Jan. 17 (pdf). Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims rising to 220,000.

The economy has regularly broken expectations over the past year. In December, it added 312,000 jobs, nearly double the expected 176,000, The Associated Press reported.

Job growth averaged 220,000 a month in 2018, the third best since 1999. Unemployment averaged 3.9 percent in 2018, the best since 1969, according to seasonally adjusted BLS data.

Hispanic unemployment was the lowest on record by far last year, averaging less than 4.7 percent. No previous year has come close, according to date reaching back as far as 1973. The distant second lowest was 2017 with over 5.1 percent.

Tempered Optimism

While the economy somewhat plateaued in the last quarter, Main Street remained upbeat.

The Small Business Optimism Index inched down to 104.4 in December, still hovering around historical highs, according to the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), which puts together the index based on surveying its members.

“Recently, we’ve seen two themes promoted in the public discourse: first, the economy is going to overheat and cause inflation and second, the economy is slowing and the Federal Reserve should not raise interest rates,” said NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg in a release. “However, the NFIB surveys of the small business half of the economy have shown no signs of an inflation threat, and in real terms Main Street remains very strong, setting record levels of hiring along the way.”

A year ago, small businesses most commonly identified taxes as their most important problem—now it’s “finding qualified labor,” the NFIB survey showed.

“Optimism among small business owners continues to push record highs, but they need workers to generate more sales, provide services, and complete projects,” said NFIB President and CEO Juanita Duggan.

Bases, Bases Everywhere… Except in the Pentagon’s Report

These installations exist somewhere between light and shadow. While acknowledged as foreign military outposts, they are excluded from the official inventory.

Within hours of President Trump’s announcement of a withdrawal of U.S. forces from Syria, equipment at that base was already being inventoried for removal. And just like that, arguably the most important American garrison in Syria was (maybe) being struck from the Pentagon’s books — except, as it happens, al-Tanf was never actually on the Pentagon’s books. Opened in 2015 and, until recently, home to hundreds of U.S. troops, it was one of the many military bases that exist somewhere between light and shadow, an acknowledged foreign outpost that somehow never actually made it onto the Pentagon’s official inventory of bases.

Officially, the Department of Defense maintains 4,775 “sites,” spread across all 50 states, eight U.S. territories, and 45 foreign countries. A total of 514 of these outposts are located overseas, according to the Pentagon’s worldwide property portfolio. Just to start down a long list, these include bases on the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia, in Djibouti on the Horn of Africa, as well as in Peru and Portugal, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom. But the most recent version of that portfolio, issued in early 2018 and known as the Base Structure Report (BSR), doesn’t include any mention of al-Tanf. Or, for that matter, any other base in Syria. Or Iraq. Or Afghanistan. Or Niger. Or Tunisia. Or Cameroon. Or Somalia. Or any number of locales where such military outposts are known to exist and even, unlike in Syria, to be expanding.

According to David Vine, author of “Base Nation: How U.S. Military Bases Abroad Harm America and the World,” there could be hundreds of similar off-the-books bases around the world. “The missing sites are a reflection of the lack of transparency involved in the system of what I still estimate to be around 800 U.S. bases outside the 50 states and Washington, D.C., that have been encircling the globe since World War II,” says Vine, who is also a founding member of the recently established Overseas Base Realignment and Closure Coalition, a group of military analysts from across the ideological spectrum who advocate shrinking the U.S. military’s global “footprint.”

Such off-the-books bases are off the books for a reason. The Pentagon doesn’t want to talk about them…

War on BDS: How AIPAC-Israel agenda became US priority

The Israeli-US war declared on the Palestinian boycott movement is coming to a head, culminating in a well-orchestrated effort aimed at suffocating any form of tangible protest of the ongoing Israeli colonization of Palestine.

But an Israeli ‘victory’, even with blind US government support, is still too elusive if at all guaranteed. Killing unarmed protesters at the fence separating besieged Gaza from Israel is often whitewashed as Israel ‘defending itself’. However, legislating unconstitutional laws against the rights of ordinary people to boycott a state that practices war crimes might not be an easy endeavor.

The fact that 26 US states have already passed legislation or some form of condemnation of the civil act of boycott, as championed in the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS) should, in fact, raise more awareness of the iniquitous Israeli influence on the United States, rather than actually thwarting BDS.

The US Senate first bill of 2019 (S.B.1) titled: “Strengthening America’s Security in the Middle East Act of 2019” called on state and local governments to withhold contracts from any individual or business entity that boycotts Israel.

The bill was defeated, which is a promising sign. However, it must be noted as profound, if not altogether outrageous, that a country that is subsisting in a government shutdown and political crisis would find it both compelling and necessary to push for such a law in defense of a foreign country.

The bill will reappear again, of course. Alas, Americans should now get used to the idea that Israel’s priorities, however skewed and irrational in defense of its illegal military occupation of Palestine, will become the main rally cry for the US government for years to come.

While such a notion has proved true in the past, never before did ordinary Americans find themselves the main target in the political agenda of the far-right government of Benjamin Netanyahu.

Even the mere protest of this agenda is being shunned. Iconic US civil rights activist, Angela Davis, 74, deservingly celebrated for her contribution to American society for decades, was denied an award by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute because of her defense of Palestinians and support of BDS.

This witch-hunt, which has now reached the most admired intellectuals of American society is affecting ordinary citizens everywhere as well, which is an alarming development in Israel’s unchecked power in the United States.

But how did Israel and its supporters acquire such disproportionate influence over the US government and society as a whole?

In short, the Lobby.

Journalist in Ghana who helped expose FIFA corruption shot dead

ACCRA, Ghana – An investigative journalist in Ghana who helped expose a high-ranking official at world soccer body FIFA as corrupt was shot dead by gunmen on a motorbike as he drove home alone at night, police said Thursday.

His employers said he was assassinated.

Ahmed Hussein-Suale was killed late Wednesday, shot twice in the chest and once in the neck at close range while driving in the suburb of Accra where he lived. He died immediately, according to police.

Tiger Eye PI, the investigative journalism house Hussein-Suale worked for, said it had the hallmarks of a professional hit.

"We call on the security agencies to unmask the elements behind this assassination and bring them to book," Tiger Eye PI said.

Police haven't announced any arrests.

Hussein-Suale worked under the leadership of Anas Aremeyaw Anas, a renowned Ghanaian investigative journalist once singled out and praised by former U.S. President Barack Obama as courageous and who has used undercover television documentaries to expose graft and organized crime in Ghana and across Africa.

Anas, who himself has gone undercover to investigate issues like human trafficking and corruption among Ghanaian judges, appears in public wearing elaborate, multicolored veils over his face to protect his identity. The veils allow him to work without being recognized but also help to avoid reprisals.

Anas confirmed Hussein-Suale's death on Facebook: "Sad news, but we shall not be silenced. Rest in peace."

The team's most recent work focused on exposing corruption in African soccer, which they portray as a murky world of backroom meetings where coaches, referees and even the most senior officials can be bribed to fix games or hand out favors.

The team got one of its biggest scoops when it caught Kwesi Nyantakyi, a member of world soccer's FIFA Council and the second most powerful man in African soccer at the time, taking a bribe of $65,000 from their undercover reporters, who were posing as unethical businessmen. Nyantakyi smiles as he stuffs the wads of cash into a black plastic bag and agrees to use his position as president of the Ghanaian Football Association to help the businessmen – for a cut of their profits.

Polk County Sheriff: ‘Deviant’ Mexican National Arrested For Felony Sexual Abuse of a Child Under the Age of 12

41-year-old Carlos Calderon was arrested by Polk County, Florida police on Tuesday and charged with eight felonies related to sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12.

Carlos Calderon’s immigration status is unclear because of conflicting data gathered by law enforcement.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd described Calderon as a ‘deviant alien from Mexico’ who is here on an “expired work visa” although data came back suggesting Calderon is in the country on a valid work permit.

Regardless of Calderon’s immigration status, ICE issued a warrant for him to be removed from the United States.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd could hardly contain his anger and disgust over what Carlos Calderon did to the poor little girl he sexually abused for several years.

According to deputies, Calderon began abusing his victim when she was just seven years old. The abuse continued for five years, reported FOX 13.

Detectives said Carlos Calderon had sexually explicit photos of the child on his phone and created child pornography — Calderon admitted to law enforcement to taking the pictures and the sexual abuse.

It gets worse…

Polk County Sheriff said Calderon blamed the child for the abuse and told investigators “hell I don’t know” when they asked him “how many times he committed a specific type of sexual battery.”

FOX 13 reported on Calderon’s criminal history:

Calderon is being held in the Polk County Jail on $400,000 bond and two counts of no bond. A search of his fingerprints brought back an illegal immigration arrest warrant from the U.S, Department of Homeland Security and, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, ICE is aware of his arrest.

However, Judd said his goal was to see Calderon imprisoned in the state of Florida for the rest of his life.

Calderon has a criminal history includes eight arrests, including six for driving with a non-valid, suspended, or revoked driver’s license, probation violation, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He now faces eight felonies, including two charges of sexual battery of a child, two counts of lewd molestation of a child under 12, use of a child in sexual performance, two counts of sexual performance by a child, and unlawful use of a two-way communication device.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd gave a press conference Wednesday and said, “Calderon’s continued molestation and sexual battery against this child is unconscionable. He preyed upon her and groomed her to commit these horrific acts. We are going to make sure he is held accountable for his actions.”

“We have an ICE warrant that said he is removable from the country,” Judd said in a press conference Wednesday. “However, other data we’ve gathered says, well, he’s here on a valid work permit and he was in the process of applying for permanent residency.”

The Democrats who are fighting to abolish ICE are advocating to have vicious child sex abusers like Carlos Calderon wandering around freely in society.

Two Child Rapists Caught Entering US With Illegal Migrant Caravan

Both were previously convicted in the US for sexual offenses with minors and deported home, the Border Patrol says.

US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) apprehended a previously convicted and subsequently deported child sex offender when he tried to cross the US-Mexican border together with the illegal migrants from the caravan, according to a report by The Daily Caller.

The CBP camera surveillance team noticed a group of 24 individuals trying to cross the border illegally not far away from a port of entry in San Luis, Arizona, the report says. The group immediately surrendered when approached by CBP agents.

When CBP checked the identities of the perpetrators, they found out that one of them was one Marcos Velasquez-Taperio, a 37-year-old from Guatemala, who was previously sentenced to a prison term in Kansas in 2009 for a child sex offense. He was deported home after spending 32 months in prison. Now, he will be prosecuted once more for reentry after deportation, CBP said Wednesday.

The announcement of Velasquez-Taperio's arrest was quickly followed by the apprehension of Wilfredo Perez-Aguilar, another child rapist, also from Guatemala. Convicted of sexual abuse and rape of a minor under the age of 12 in Kentucky in 2005, he was caught Monday trying to cross the border in Southern California.

"I am proud of our Border Patrol agents for making this arrest," Gloria Chavez, the chief patrol agent of the El Centro Sector in California, said in a statement Tuesday. "Deported sexual predators seeking to illegally enter the US will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

The news comes amid the longest government shutdown in US history, with Democrats denying President Donald Trump the $5.7 billion in funding he demands for the construction of a wall on the US-Mexican border in order to stop uncontrolled, illegal crossing of the border by immigrants.
