The last team she was speaker she basically wanted her own Air Force One. Since then, as minority leader, this is how she traveled, most likely. So this should be a dog bites man story.
Story here is that she took a big hit by the POTUS pulling the codel flight. Not just because of the cancellation, but also that she's not going to be getting military planes to fly back and forth to CA on the weekends this time around as speaker.
Here's my theory. POTUS's tweet with the letter cancelling trip said itinerary was Brussels, Egypt, Afghanistan. Stop in Brussels was for pilot rest, supposedly (dems excuse).
I don't believe the pilot rest story because longest non-stop commercial flight is/was Montreal-Singapore (18 hours?). Add to that troops fly US <-AFG all the time on military. Do they stop? If they do stop, why Brussels (private airport) when Ramstein is about a 1/2 hour down the road flight time. Doesn't wash.
Also, Brussels -Afghanistan wouldn't take you over Egypt, rather over Ukraine and North of Greece and Turkey. So the Egypt stop would be kind of like flying SF -> NYC with a stop in Dallas.
All this means to me is, if Egypt was in itinerary, that they were going to drop the families off in Egypt for sightseeing, make a quickie with officials to AFG, then pick the families up in Egypt on the way back. Those Egypt hops would also be pawned off as 'pilot rest'.
Other big question in this is that a incoming congresswoman was scheduled to go, This new critter is a Navy vet with nuke training. Put the scheduled meeting with the EU's Federica Mogherini in Brussels (Iran supporter/wants EU to disregard US sanctions) into the mix and you have the potential for some big league fuckery.
TL;DR: They were going to drop the kids off in Egypt to see the pyramids. (my speculation)
