Jewish tradition held that rich people had somehow been blessed by God. That they were somehow holier or chosen and that is why they enjoyed their wealthy reward. On the flip side, Jewish tradition also held that the sick, diseased, dying must have sinned or otherwise angered God - that is why they were being punished.

Jesus' purpose in this verse is to say that this way of thinking is wrong. Wealth has nothing to do with standing with God. Disease has nothing to do with standing with God. Those temporal conditions do not qualify us or disqualify us for anything. Instead, follow Jesus - the one true mediator between God and men, he is the way, the truth and the life.

That's why scripture sums up these verses by saying: When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished and asked, โ€œWho then can be saved?โ€

But Jesus looked at them and said, โ€œWith man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.โ€

The point was that EVERYONE (wealthy, sick, everyone in the middle) is disqualified from standing with God, apart from Jesus and a relationship with him.
