NO … he wasn't told to sell all of his shit. He was free to do with it as he wished. What happened was that he and his wife CLAIMED that they had sold all their shit and had given all the proceeds to the common purse so as to CLAIM welfare from the group and claim some sort of Pharisaical sort of status for having donated so much – just like at temple. All they had to do was tell the truth. They were trying to cheat the people of God. The point being made that you can't lie to God.
