2 dead as strong earthquake hits central Chile

A strong earthquake measuring 6.7 has struck near Coquimbo in central Chile, causing damage and leaving more than 200,000 customers without power, officials say. At least 2 people died of heart attacks.

The earthquake, which struck at 10:32 p.m. local time on Saturday, was centered in the ocean, about 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) southwest of Coquimbo, a port city in the region that carries the same name.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) put the magnitude of the earthquake at 6.7, down from an initial estimate of 6.8. It struck at a depth of 53 kilometers (33 miles), making it a relatively shallow earthquake.

Damage was reported at a number of locations, but there was no indication of serious damage. Two people died after suffering heart attacks during the earthquake, according to officials in Coquimbo and Peñuelas.

MEPs in Strasbourg: everywhere but the plenary

On Tuesday (15 January), during a plenary debate with Austrian chancellor Sebastian Kurz, two centre-right German MEPs could be seen reading newspapers.

Something was amusing, apparently. MEP Werner Langen showed the front page of the broadsheet Bild newspaper to his European People's Party (EPP) colleague Jens Gieseke, who laughed.

In any case, the contents of Bild, and several other newspapers, were apparently more interesting to Langen than his colleagues' speeches, delivered in response to Kurz' opening statement.

German spies to monitor far-right AfD party

Germany's domestic intelligence agency, the BfV, is to start monitoring the far-right AfD party in a move endorsed by the government, but decried as a political witch-hunt by the party's leaders.

"The BfV has initial indications that the AfD's policies are against the democratic constitutional order," Thomas Haldenwang, the BfV head, told press in Berlin on Tuesday (15 January).

The Alarming Cost Of Climate Change Hysteria

The U.S. Government Accounting Office (GAO) can't figure out what benefits taxpayers are getting from the many billions of dollars spent each year on policies that are purportedly aimed at addressing climate change.

A May 20 report noted that while annual federal funding for such activities has been increasing substantially, there is a lack of shared understanding of strategic priorities among the various responsible agency officials. This assessment agrees with the conclusions of a 2008 Congressional Research Service analysis which found no "overarching policy goal for climate change that guides the programs funded or the priorities among programs."

Half a million attend opposition rally to remove India’s Modi | India News

India‘s opposition parties have drawn half a million supporters to the eastern city of Kolkata for the largest show of force yet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of national elections due by May.

The massive “Unite India” rally held on Saturday brought together leaders of over 20 national and regional parties – many of whom have previously fought against each other during elections – to rail against Modi and his ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“The Modi government is past its expiry date,” said Mamata Banerjee, chief minister of West Bengal state.

Her government, which organised the rally, had suggested four million would attend, but Kolkata Police chief Rajeev Kumar said 500,000 showed up in the eastern city.

Modi, who was inspecting military hardware in Gujarat state on Saturday, accused the opposition of acting in self-interest.

Decentralization Is The Solution To The Government Shutdown Problem

The partial shutdown with the federal government has helped, perhaps more than any other recent political event, to illustrate some of the biggest problems that come with centralizing an ever-larger number of government activities within a single, centralized institution.

Were the US government more decentralized, we’d not now be facing a nationwide systemic failure that has continues to cripple the private sector in many ways.

Held Hostage by a Shuttered Regulatory State

The federalization of resources and regulatory power over the past century has created a situation in which numerous industries depend on licensing and regulatory approval from federal regulators to function. And, yet, thanks to the shutdown, these industries can do little when facing a federal government that imposes mandates, but won’t provide the agency “services” necessary to allow agencies to function under those mandates.

For example, As The Washington Post has reported, those areas where the federal government has a large regulatory footprint — such as Alaska — are at the mercy of politicians thousands of miles away.
