Explosion in Londonderry, Police Investigate Suspected Car Bomb
Police in Northern Ireland reported a suspected car bomb that exploded in Londonderry on Saturday, Jan. 19, around 8:15 p.m. local time. There are no apparent injuries from the incident as people were urged to stay away from the area.
An image released by police on Twitter showed what appeared to be a burning vehicle in Bishop Street in the center of the city. The suspected blast occurred outside the city’s courthouse.
A journalist from the Irish edition of the Sunday Times newspaper reported that the attack was carried out by the New IRA, a terrorist group opposed to the 1998 peace deal that largely ended three decades of violence in the British-run province.
Some 3,600 people were killed in the conflict that was fought between mainly Protestant unionists who want Northern Ireland to remain part of the United Kingdom and predominantly Catholic nationalists. Some sporadic violence continues among small, splinter groups but car bombings are rare.
The reported bombing comes as police on both sides of the now-open border between Northern Ireland and European Union-member Ireland have express fears that a return to a hard border after Brexit, complete with customs and other checks, could be a target for terrorist groups.

Docs claim US trained UAE pilots for combat in Yemen, signaling deeper involvement in conflict
The American military has trained UAE fighter pilots for combat missions in Yemen, indicating Washington’s deeper involvement into the ongoing conflict, a recent report citing US Air Force documents claims.
The papers were obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request by Yahoo News. They appear to show how United Arab Emirates (UAE) pilots and crew were prepared for the Yemen conflict by US instructors under the UAE’s “F-16 pilot training program.”
It was completed at the USAF’s Warfare Center in Al Dhafra, just south of the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi.
The training which, according to the documents, took place between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2017, resulted in four new instructors and 29 combat wingmen prior to their immediate deployment “for combat operations in Yemen.”
Also revealed was the escorting of four UAE F-16s to the USAF’s Red Flag exercises in the Nevada desert. The two-week advanced aerial combat training oversaw 150 Emirati personnel participate in “challenging exercises” with the goal to “prepare” them for combat action in Yemen.
The UAE has been involved in Yemen’s civil war as part of a Western-backed, Saudi-led coalition battling Houthi rebels who rose up against the government in 2015.
While Saudi Arabia’s bombing campaign in the country has garnered the most international criticism, the UAE’s role has received less coverage. However, it has been an active partner in the coalition, contributing both troops on the ground in addition to planes in the sky.
When pressed for comment on the UAE training by Yahoo News, both a US Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesperson and a second CENTCOM official, Lt. Col. Josh Jacques, repeatedly denied the claims of prepping pilots for Yemen sorties.
“We do not conduct exercises with members of the [Saudi-led coalition] to prepare for combat operations in Yemen,” Jacques said.
US officials have long been coy regarding the true extent of their support for the coalition, insisting that arm sales, air-to-air refueling, as well as intelligence training and sharing constitute the extent of their involvement.
However, in November, the US government said it would end mid-air refueling of coalition aircraft in response to growing outrage that the Saudi-led bombing campaign was unlawfully targeting civilians and putting the country on the brink of famine. For its part, Riyadh has repeatedly denied targeting civilians and not military related infrastructure on purpose.
In December, top US military brass reiterated Washington’s lack of involvement. Speaking at a Washington Post event, General Joseph F. Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, insisted that the US was not participating in the civil war, “nor are we supporting one side or the other.”

Sen. Durbin Co-Sponsored Plan To Protect Dreamers — Now That Trump Wants It, He’s Against It
Democratic Illinois Senator Dick Durbin came out against the border security proposal announced by President Donald Trump on Saturday, publishing a statement before the president even delivered his remarks.
In his statement, the Senate Minority Whip explained that he could not accept the deal Trump offered. “I cannot support the proposed offer as reported, and I do not believe it can pass the Senate.”
The president’s plan included a three-year extension of legal protections for DACA recipients and those in Temporary Protected Status (TPS) — concessions that mirror those proposed in December 2016 in the bipartisan Bridge Act.
The Bridge Act was drafted to protect Dreamers after then President-elect Trump promised to tear up the Obama-era executive order that put DACA on the books in the first place.
Republican South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, who co-sponsored the bill in 2016 and has said several times that Trump should consider offering DACA protections in exchange for the security measures he wants, told Politico why he supported the bill.
“In my view, the [executive action] issued by President Obama was unconstitutional and President-elect Trump would be right to repeal it,” he said. “However, I do not believe we should pull the rug out and push these young men and women — who came out of the shadows and registered with the federal government — back into the darkness.”
Graham’s co-sponsor on Bridge Act was the very same senator who announced Saturday he would reject a deal from the White House that included everything he asked for just over two years ago.

Kirsten Gillibrand Announces Presidential Candidacy – Fails To Mention Her NXIVM Connections
Earlier this week, Kirsten Gillibrand, the junior U.S. Senator from New York State, announced on The Stephen Colbert Show that she was running for President.
The next day she made the same announcement in Troy, NY – which is where she plans to base her campaign.
Accompanying her at the Troy, NY announcement were her husband, Jonathan – and her two sons, Theodore and Henry. Also standing next to her was her mother, Polly Noonan.
Notable by their absence at the second announcement were Gillibrand’s father, Doug Rutnik – and her step-mother, Gwenn Bellcourt.
As reported first in Frank Report – and followed up later in several other publications like the New York Post and The Daily Mail – Rutnik and Bellcourt both have ties to the NXIVM cult and two of its leaders, Keith Raniere and Nancy Salzman.
Back in 2004, Rutnik was hired as a consultant/lobbyist by the cult at a rate of $25,000 per month.
One of Rutnik’s first NXIVM-related assignments was to smooth over the problems that resulted because Raniere had reneged on his promise to pay $40,000 to the Office of the New York State Attorney General in conjunction with the shutting-down of his Consumers Buyline operation.
Rutnik was reportedly also tasked with getting Toni Natalie and Rick Ross indicted – which he was apparently unable or unwilling to do. In fairness to Rutnik, this all happened before David Soares became Albany County District Attorney – and started indicting anyone who was on Raniere’s “Enemies List”.
Bellcourt, who happens to be Rutnik’s significantly younger second cousin, got involved with NXIVM when she was hired by Rutnik to take a 5-day intensive in order to determine if NXIVM needed to be licensed as an educational institution.
But instead of just completing her assignment, Bellcourt became enamored with the cult – and kept taking more and more sessions on her own.
Raniere and Salzman kept pressing for Bellcourt to drop everything else she was doing – and work for NXIVM full-time. They also pressed her into breaking off her engagement with her then-fiancé – which she did.
When Rutnik tried to convince Bellcourt to leave the cult, NXIVM responded by firing him for his alleged sexual harassment of Salzman – and suing him for all the money he had been paid. He quickly settled the lawsuit by paying back $100,000 – and signing a Non-Disclosure Agreement.
