US airstrikes kill 52 Islamic militants in Somalia

U.S. forces killed an estimated 52 members of the militant Islamic terrorist group al Shabab in airstrikes in Jilib, Somalia, on Saturday, U.S. Africa Command reported.

Al Shabab, an organization linked to al Qaeda, claimed responsibility for an attack on a Nairobi hotel in Kenya Wednesday that left 14 dead, as well as seven attackers.

"U.S. Africa Command conducted the airstrike in response to an attack by a large group of al-Shabaab militants against Somali National Army Forces," U.S. Africa Command, the branch of the military that coordinates with allies on the continent, said in a statement. The strike was part of a broader effort to prevent the terrorist group from "taking advantage of safe havens from which they can build capacity and attack the people of Somalia."

The action brings the total number of U.S. airstrikes this year to six, and the total number of suspected militants killed to 78. Last year, the U.S. reported that it killed 323 al Shabab militants in 41 separate strikes.

The al Shabab group is centered in southern and central Somalia and is believed to be responsible Somalia’s deadliest attack, a truck bomb in Mogadishu in 2017 that killed more than 500 people in 2017. Four years before that, in 2013, its militants targeted a shopping center in Westgate, Nairobi, killing 67 people. In addition to terrorism, the group steals humanitarian aid and extorts the local population, U.S. Africa Command said.

'Jewish state' will soon cease to exist, Israelis may flee to West: Zionist historian

Influential Zionist historian Benny Morris, professor of the Middle East studies department of the Israeli Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, has foreseen a bleak future for the Zionist establishment.

"Already today there are more Arabs than Jews between the [Mediterranean] sea and the Jordan. The whole territory is unavoidably becoming one state with an Arab majority," said Morris in an interview published by the Israeli Haaretz newspaper on Thursday.

"Israel still calls itself a Jewish state, but a situation in which we rule an occupied people that has no rights, can not persist in the 21st century, in the modern world. And as soon as they do have rights, the state will no longer be Jewish," added Morris.

"I do not see how we get out of it."

Morris, who was injured by an Egyptian artillery shell in 1969, was discharged from the military to eventually become one of Israel’s influential historians.

Describing himself as a staunch "left-winger" and "Zionist," Morris is part of a controversial group of Israeli revisionist historians, openly admitting to and defending events like the 1948 expulsion of Palestinians that is today remembered as the Nakba Day.

"A Jewish state would not have come into being without the uprooting of 700,000 Palestinians. Therefore it was necessary to uproot them. There was no choice but to expel that population," said Morris in an interview with Haaretz in 2004.

Today, however, Morris believes Israel faces a bleak future considering Arabs' non-integration in Israel and their larger population.

"The Palestinians look at everything from a broad, long-term perspective. They see that at the moment, there are five-six-seven million Jews here, surrounded by hundreds of millions of Arabs," the historian said in the Thursday interview.

"They have no reason to give in, because the Jewish state can not last."

Morris further envisions how an Israel dominated by Arabs will slowly disintegrate.

"The Arabs will demand the return of the refugees. The Jews will remain a small minority within a large Arab sea of Palestinians,” the historian said.

"Those among the Jews who can, will flee to America and the West [to avoid persecution]."

Many Jews, however, have rejected the Zionist concept of Israel being a legitimate Jewish state, dismissing Morris’s understanding, which pits Jews against Arabs.

Facing populist assault, global elites regroup in Davos

As the world’s financial and political elites convene here in the Swiss Alps for the World Economic Forum, their vision of ever-closer commercial and political ties is under attack — and the economic outlook is darkening.

Britain’s political system has been thrown into chaos as the country negotiates a messy divorce from the European Union.

A year after getting a standing ovation from the elites at Davos, French President Emmanuel Macron is sinking in the polls as he contends with “yellow vest” protesters who have taken to the streets to call for higher wages and fairer pensions. Nationalist political movements are gaining strength across Europe.

And the economic backdrop is worrying: experts are downgrading their forecasts for global growth this year amid rising interest rates and tensions over trade.

Bush Ran a Secret National Security Team as VP, Says Seymour Hersh

The veteran investigative reporter writes that George H. Bush, as vice president, ran a covert operations team in the early 1980s that even the CIA didn’t know about. As a former CIA director, Bush had the experience to oversee activities.

Hersh says the vice president’s team ran 35 counterterrorism, counternarcotics and assassination operations between 1981 and 1985.

He writes:

At his direction, a team of military operatives was set up that bypassed the national security establishment – including the CIA – and wasn’t answerable to congressional oversight. It was led by Vice-Admiral Arthur Moreau, a brilliant navy officer who would be known to those on the inside as ‘M’.

Hersh says this operation ended in 1985 when Admiral William Crowe, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff took exception to Bush’s secret group and arranged for Moreau’s promotion to another job.

Iran-Contra Prequel

Hersh depicts the Bush operation as a kind of prequel to the Iran-Contra scandal.

It was in 1984 that CIA director William Casey and National Security Council Staffer Oliver North started organizing a conspiracy to bypass a congressional ban on aid to counterrevolutionary forces in Central America. Their too-clever-by-half scheme was to secretly sell arms to Iran in return for the release of U.S. hostages in Lebanon and use the proceeds to fund the contra rebels fighting a leftist government in Nicaragua.

Perhaps the most startling claim in Hersh’s story is that Bush’s secret team leaked word of the Casey-North scheme to a Lebanese magazine.

An unnamed source is quoted as saying

‘We’re going nuts. If we don’t manage this carefully, our whole structure will unravel. And so we’ – former members of Moreau’s team who were still working for Bush – ‘leaked the story to the magazine in Lebanon.’ He was referring to an article, published on 3 November 1986 by Ash-Shiraa magazine in Beirut, that described the arms for hostages agreement.

That story triggered the scandal that changed the course of Reagan’s presidency.

Is It Credible?

I thought Hersh’s last story for a German publication was weak. Relying on what seemed to be a single unnamed source, Hersh claimed that Trump launched a cruise missile attack on Syria in April 2017 without any evidence from U.S. intelligence that Syria was responsible.

Counterpunch complained Hersh’s reporting, which once appeared in the New Yorker and the London Review of Books, was being marginalized for political reasons.

But there were sound journalistic reasons to question the value of the story. The reporting was sketchy and the thesis unconvincing.

This story, published in the London Review of Books, with a wealth of corroborating references, is much stronger. It sheds new light on secret government in the 1980s.

Syrian Army Artillery Pounds Militant Positions In Idlib And Hama

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the artillery and rocket strikes were a response to new violations of the Russian-Turkish demilitarized zone agreement. The state-run agency claimed that the strikes killed and injured many militants and destroyed some of their military equipment.

Earlier, Turkey’s national defense minister claimed that his country is implementing its commitments within the demilitarized zone agreement. However, the tense situation around Idlib shows otherwise.

Russian Warplanes Smash Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham Positions In Southern Idlib

At the early hours of January 20, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out a series of airstrikes on positions of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in the towns of Khan al-Sabil and al-Janudiyah in the southern Idlib countryside.

A Russian military source told the Sputnik news agency that the airstrikes were carried out in order to prevent the radical group from launching rockets at positions of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in northern Hama. Recent reports indicate that Moscow and its allies may be planning to take their response a step further and launch a ground operation around Idlib, if the militant continue their destructive behavior.

Attorney Robert Barnes: I Will Represent Pro-Life Catholic Children FOR FREE If They Sue NY Times Hack Haberman

BuzzFeed and the hateful left-wing media is at it again — these MAGA teens were doxxed and are now in fear for their lives!

On Friday, a group of high school boys from Kentucky went to the Lincoln Memorial after attending the March For Life.

While standing at the memorial a Native American activist, Nathan Phillips, approached the boys and started harassing them.

Phillips, reportedly a Vietnam veteran, got up in one boy’s face and started screaming and beating his drum inches from the boy’s face.

Phillips also has a history of setting up similar incidents.

According to one of the high school boys who was present, a group of black men were taunting the Trump supporters, calling them “shooters” and “crackers” and said the white kids “had everything given to them by their parents.”

According to a witness, it was at this point that a Native American man showed up “out of nowhere” and began drumming in the high school kid’s face.

“We weren’t even chanting at him, we were chanting at the African American guy, but obviously social media made us look bad to get views and stuff,” a witness said.

Washington fears new threat from 'deepfake' videos

Lawmakers and experts are sounding the alarm about "deepfakes," forged videos that look remarkably real, warning they will be the next phase in disinformation campaigns.

The manipulated videos make it difficult to distinguish between fact and fiction, as artificial intelligence technology produces fake content that looks increasingly real.

The issue has the attention of lawmakers from both parties on Capitol Hill.

“It is almost too late to sound the alarm before this technology is released — it has been unleashed … and now we are playing a bit of defense,” Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Mark Warner (D-Va.) told The Hill.

Asked whether this is the next phase of disinformation campaigns, Warner replied "Absolutely."

Experts say it is only a matter of time before advances in artificial intelligence technology and the proliferation of those tools allow any online user to create deepfakes.

“It is regarded by political and technology experts as the next weapon in the disinformation warfare,” Fabrice Pothier, senior advisor with the Transatlantic Commission on Election Integrity, told The Hill.

Pottier worries that technological advances will make it harder to detect false or doctored videos.

“I think it is probably going to be very hard to just use the human eye to distinguish something that is fake from something that is real,” he said.

Intelligence experts say the threat from deepfakes is immense and warn of potentially dangerous scenarios if the technology to create them is not reined in.

“This technology should be considered criminal, counterterrorism or even counterespionage behavior,” said Bob Anderson, principal at The Chertoff Group.

For example, experts posed hypotheticals such as terrorist groups ISIS or al Qaeda manufacturing videos of American soldiers creating atrocities on the battlefield as propaganda; videos falsely showing political candidates making controversial remarks before an election; or CEOs announcing incorrect financial projections.

The fallout from such scenarios could be disastrous.

Tesla Job Cuts: How Many Employees Will Be Let Go?

Tesla (TSLA) has announced that it will be cutting 7 percent of its full-time workforce in an effort to become more competitive with its Model 3. The cuts come as CEO Elon Musk said focus must be on delivering “at least the mid-range Model 3 variant in all markets.”

In an email to employees, Musk laid out the plans for the company going forward as well as how only the “only the most critical temps and contractors” will be retained. In a tweet from October 2018, Musk revealed that the company had 45,000 employees, which suggests that over 3,000 will be cut.

Musk warned employees of the volatility of the company saying, “many companies that can offer a better work-life balance, because they are larger and more mature or in industries that are not so voraciously competitive.”

“Tesla will need to make these cuts while increasing the Model 3 production rate and making many manufacturing engineering improvements in the coming months,” he added.

“Higher volume and manufacturing design improvements are crucial for Tesla to achieve the economies of scale required to manufacture the standard range (220 mile) standard interior Model 3 at $35k and still be a viable company. There isn’t any other way.”

In the email to employees, Musk reported that 2018 was the most successful year to date for Tesla. The company revealed a 4 percent earnings increase, which Musk attributed to the Model 3. He said it was the best-selling premium U.S. vehicle of the year.

“As we all experienced first-hand, last year was the most challenging in Tesla’s history. However, thanks to your efforts, 2018 was also the most successful year in Tesla’s history: we delivered almost as many cars as we did in all of 2017 in the last quarter alone and nearly as many cars last year as we did in all the prior years of Tesla’s existence combined!” Musk said.

“Model 3 also became the best-selling premium vehicle of 2018 in the US. This is truly remarkable and something that few thought possible just a short time ago.”

The job cuts are just one of a number of reductions that the company has made as of recently. Earlier this week, Tesla announced that it would be eliminating its buyer referral program because it proved to be too costly.

Share of Tesla were down 12.47 percent as of 2:13 p.m. EST on Friday.

“Below 1%”: The Monarch Butterfly Is Approaching Total and Irreversible Extinction

The monarch butterfly, the majestic black-and-orange pollinator that once covered winter trees like leaves from the Baja California Peninsula up to California’s Central Coast, is facing a sharp population decline that could spell its irreversible doom.

According to a new survey conducted by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, the iconic North American butterfly, which migrates thousands of miles across the continent on an annual basis, is now hovering inches away from extinction.

In 1980, the monarch butterfly population reached about 4.5 million. By the mid-2000s, the count dropped to barely 100,000; and last year, the number of western monarchs fell to a staggering 28,429 – a 99.4 percent decline that Xerces Society conservation biologist Emma Pelton described to the San Francisco Chronicle as “this other order of magnitude drop.”

“It’s mind-boggling. We’re now down below 1 percent of the historic population,” Pelton explained to the Chronicle.

Continuing, the biologist explained that the death of the monarch species could have a knock-on effect on other insects such as bees and insectivorous bird species:

It is very apt to say this is a canary in a coal mine for a lot of our native pollinators … There’s a tight link in a loss of insects and our songbirds, which rely on insects. We have declines in songbirds, and I think that links directly to declines in insects.

By now, the process of extinction could prove inexorable, plunging the monarch into an “extinction vortex” wherein the species will be unable to replenish its numbers through its natural reproductive process.

The cause of the monarch’s steep and rapid decline has forced biologists to look for answers as to why the die-off has occurred. A variety of factors could be involved, all of which are tied to human economic activities ranging from logging and sprawling urbanization to pesticide and herbicide use on industrial corn and soybean crops as well as the plowing of the monarch’s milkweed habitat along the route by which it migrates.

The Xerces Society conducted the survey on Thanksgiving Day with the aid of hundreds of volunteers who counted butterflies in about 300 locations across California, a method by which the conservationist group has maintained a record of the monarch populations over the course of decades.

Scientists have suggested that since the mid-20th century, when radioactive fallout from above-ground nuclear weapons tests began to spread across the globe and human impacts on the environment began to rapidly accelerate, the earth entered a new epoch whereby human society became the primary geological force whose actions determine the future of the entire Earth system.

Dubbed the Anthropocene – a combination of the Greek word anthropos (“human”) and kainos (“new”) – the modern epoch is the first truly man-made geological period in the Earth’s history. It has also entailed mass extinctions of plants and animals alike.

Whether humankind still maintains the ability to shape our ecological environment for the better remains an open question, but the mass demise of the monarch butterfly and innumerable other species suggests that the precious time within which we can steer the Earth in a radically different direction on a system-wide level is fast running out.

NEW YORK, January 19. /TASS/. A Delta IV Heavy rocked with a satellite for the US National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) blasted off from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on Saturday, according to a live broadcast on the ULA website.

The launch took place at 11:10 local time (22:10 Moscow time), with a five-minute delay caused by strong winds. The weather conditions were only 40% favorable for the launch.

The rocket’s two side boosters separated four minutes into the flight.

The first phase of the launch was a success. The broadcast was concluded six minutes after the blastoff, after separation of the rocket's payload fairing, at the request from NRA.

The mission was rescheduled several times, the latest delay was announced on December 21.

No information is available about the payload, known under the codename NROL-71.

Delta IV Heavy is the heavy modification of the Delta IV rocket. It features two additional boosters, adjusted to the sides of the main segment. The rocket is capable of taking the payload of up to 14.2 tonnes to the geostationary orbit and up to 28.8 tonnes - to the low-earth orbit.

technology expert claims Humans will download their SOULS onto microchips so they can ‘live FOREVER’

Richard Skellett, a founder of Digital Anthropologist and an expert for Future of Work, has warned of a future in which British workers have chips inserted underneath their skin.

The process has already been trialled with company BioTeq fitting 150 implants in the UK.

And Sweden-based firm Biohax told the Sunday Telegraph that it is in discussions with several British companies about microchipping.

But as humans and machines become more in-sync, it could open up all sorts of possibilities – including being able to live forever.

Speaking to Daily Star Online, Mr Skellett explained: “There’s a lot of talk at the moment about microchipping employees and there are some companies that are actually doing that.

Mr Skellett added: “Living forever might sound crazy at the moment because the technology isn’t quite there, but we already have the technology to clone.

“The only thing is that something may be an exact replica in terms of DNA but it may be nothing like you because we are made up of both nature and nurture.

“So imagine now that you’ve got a chip, and that chip has been collecting all of your personal details, all of your learning, that effectively becomes our soul.

Meet the Team Behind CNN Brasil: A Businessman Accused of Exploiting Slave Labor and An Executive From a Fox News-style Outlet

Last Monday, CNN announced that it will launch a Portuguese-language channel in Brazil. The U.S.-based cable news channel will roll out the latest foreign operation to bear the CNN brand through a license. However, the scandal-prone records of the two Brazilian partners behind the venture are already raising questions over the forthcoming channel’s credibility.

Principal funding for the venture will come from the new channel’s chair of the board, Rubens Menin, a construction magnate who is a vocal cheerleader for far-right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and whose company has been caught multiple times using modern slave labor. CNN Brasil also announced that it will bring on Douglas Tavolaro as its CEO. Tavolaro previously served as vice president for news of Rede Record, a channel that in 2018 earned the nickname “Fox News Brasil” for its fawning coverage of Bolsonaro’s presidential campaign and the preferential access it secured as a result. When orders from on high at Record demanded that journalists cease criticism of Bolsonaro and increase negative coverage of his competitor, a minor staff revolt ensued and multiple journalists resigned in protest.

On Friday, the two figures behind CNN Brasil — Menin and Tavolaro — met with Bolsonaro and his son Eduardo at the presidential palace. Earlier this week, Eduardo tweeted his skepticism of the new outlet.

CNN Brasil said it plans to hire 400 journalists and begin operations during the second half of 2019. A press release noted that the 24-hour news channel will have total editorial independence, as well as the rights to rebroadcast CNN’s non-Portuguese language content. CNN Brasil appears to be swimming against the tide in an industry in which wave after wave of layoffs in major TV and print news organizations have thinned out Brazil’s newsrooms in recent years.

Over the last 20 years, CNN has made several attempts to create a Brazilian channel, but previous negotiations have never gotten off the ground. A representative from CNN declined to respond to The Intercept’s questions and instead issued the following statement: “CNN does a comprehensive audit of all its licensing partners. This is the case of the licensees who will operate CNN Brasil, who have our full support. As with all licensing agreements, CNN Brasil will program the channel independently, but in line with CNN standards and practices.” But, according to the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas-Austin, CNN-licensed media companies abroad are not always viewed as hewing to the guidelines that govern the U.S.-based CNN operation’s journalism.

Brazil’s corporate media landscape is extremely consolidated and uniformly pro-business. In 2016, nearly every major publisher supported the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff and her replacement by Michel Temer, who immediately undertook a campaign of austerity and neoliberal reforms.

Bolsonaro, for his part, regularly puts the media in his crosshairs, at times sounding like a carbon copy of U.S. President Donald Trump. In recent months, multiple outlets like Record and the television network SBT have scampered to curry his administration’s favor, often serving as an unofficial mouthpiece in exchange for exclusive interviews and the prospect of an increased cut of the hundreds of millions of dollars in annual government ad spending. SBT even gave Bolsonaro his own show. Other publishers, worried that they might lose this crucial revenue, have quietly ordered journalists to tone down their coverage and refrain from calling Bolsonaro “far-right” or “extremist.”
