Chief Justice, On Panel To Pick New CBI Chief, Withdraws From Key Hearing

NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has withdrawn from the hearing on a case challenging the appointment of M Nageswara Rao as interim CBI chief.

The Chief Justice said he was recusing himself because he is a member of the high-powered selection committee that will pick a successor to Alok Verma, who was removed as CBI director months after he was sent on leave and replaced by Nageswara Rao.

Nageswara Rao took over from him a second time after the selection committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to remove Alok Verma and transfer him to fire services.

An NGO had filed a petition last Monday through advocate Prashant Bhushan, seeking a direction to cancel the government's order appointing Mr Rao as the acting director of the agency. Common Cause, that filed the petition, said it was "illegal, arbitrary, mala fide and in violation of the Delhi Police Special Establishment (DPSE) Act".

The NGO also sought a direction to the government to appoint a regular director of the CBI as per the rules.

The Israeli military attacked Iranian targets Sunday night in Syria, the Israel Defense Forces spokesman said, hours after it said it intercepted "dozens" of missiles launched by Iranian forces from Syria toward Israel.

Russia's Defense Control Center said that four Syrian soldiers were killed in the attack.

"We warn the Syrian Armed Forces against attempting to harm Israeli forces or territory," The IDF said in a statement, adding that it struck targets belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' elite unit Quds Force. The Israeli military said Syrian air defense units had also been attacked.

Woman injured in Sandringham crash ‘surprised’ at lack of contact from Prince Philip

A mother-of-two injured in a car crash involving Britain's Duke of Edinburgh has said she has received a message from the Queen – but is “surprised” Philip has not tried to contact her personally.

Emma Fairweather said a member of the Queen’s staff left a voice message after trying to ring her to find out how she was following the incident that left her with a broken wrist.

The 46-year-old said it was “confusing” to receive a message “from someone else’s partner who wasn’t involved in the accident”.

“The door is absolutely still open for him to reach out,” she told the Daily Mirror.

While it’s nice the Queen has seen it may be appropriate to ask one of her staff to contact me and wish me well, she wasn’t involved in the accident.

“I’m still quite surprised that Prince Philip hasn’t felt he wants to contact me and inquire as to how I am.”

The Queen attended a church service on the Sandringham Estate on Sunday accompanied by the Duke of York.

Her husband did not attend, although he has missed several services in recent weeks.

It emerged on Sunday that Ms Fairweather had not been contacted by anyone from the palace following the crash, which happened on Thursday afternoon, despite officials saying the parties involved had exchanged “well-wishes” with Philip.
