Donald Trump’s team has sparked fury with ‘Send A Brick’ campaign directed at Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer

Donald Trump’s campaign team is facing a backlash over a controversial fundraising campaign to build a wall on the US-

Donald Trump’s campaign team is facing a backlash after launching a fundraising drive to send “bricks” to the offices of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The campaign encourages people to “send a brick to Chuck and Nancy” to remind them of the importance of building the President’s proposed wall on the US-Mexico border.

Its home page offers people to either “send Nancy a brick” or “send Chuck a brick”, with a photograph of a red brick with an SMS number to which people can donate to the cause.

Text on the brick also states: “2018: Fentanyl at the border … enough entered US to kill every American.”

“Since Chuck and Nancy keep stonewalling the President, why don’t we send the wall to them, brick by brick, until they agree to secure the border!” tweeted Donald Trump Jr.

“President Trump came up with a brilliant idea to make sure Chuck and Nancy have no choice but to listen to the American people,” reads the text on the home page.

“We have set a goal to send 100,000 BRICKS to their offices to prove that WALLS WORK!” it adds. It allows people to “send” one brick for $20.20. Subsequent bricks work out at $20 each.

But social media users were quick to spot that the money will actually go to the Trump Make America Great Again Committee ― “a joint fundraising committee composed of Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. and the Republican National Committee”.

The campaign also sparked concerns the campaign will end with acts of violence.

An analysis in The Washington Post of the cost of Mr Trump’s wall — using his $US20.20 gimmick bricks — would cost a total of $US58 billion, almost 12 times more than the President is currently requesting from the Democrats.

And given they’re still refusing to budge on the requested $US5 billion, it’s safe to assume this campaign won’t be all that effective.

Schultz: Pistorius's a bunch of liars

Sars after Kebble killer

EXCLUSIVE: Agrizzi to implicate Zuma, Jiba in Bosasa scandal

ANC distances itself ahead of more revelations expected at state capture inquiry from former Bosasa COO

Self-confessed hitman and security boss Mikey Schultz insists he has not been hired by controversial company Bosasa or its CEO Gavin Watson to act as an enforcer or protector.

He says he has never met the Watsons and isn't interested in getting involved in "their sh*t". Instead, Schultz alleges that former Bosasa COO Angelo Agrizzi, who he describes as a "greedy clown", asked him to assault Watson in order to collect debt from him.

Over the past week, Agrizzi has given explosive testimony to the Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture, detailing the extensive corruption of politicians, prosecutors and government officials.

Prior to the start of his evidence, lawyer Paul Pretorius told the commission about a series of threats that have been issued against Agrizzi as a result of his imminent evidence implicating his former employers.

Adv Pretorius told Zondo that Agrizzi had received a series of threatening and strange phone calls between December 2017 and March 2018.

"The allegation is made in relation to a warning given to Mr Agrizzi telephonically that 'Watson could make people disappear.'"

Pretorius also explained that in his affidavit, Agrizzi mentions that Schultz had been hired to protect the Watsons.

READ: Agrizzi testimony gives NPA key piece of evidence its needs to prosecute, after 8-year delay

"There's evidence of an interaction with a private security person hired by Bosasa to protect its interests involving amongst others Mikey Schultz, who is well known in circles in Johannesburg and South Africa," said Pretorius.

Schultz, who received indemnity from prosecution in 2010 for the murder of mining tycoon Brett Kebble, says he "doesn't know these people and they must leave me the f*ck alone".

Schultz earned a reputation as a debt collector and muscle for hire during the late 1990s and early 2000s when he was a co-owner of bouncing outfit Elite. He also testified in court about how he had been hired to kill Kebble in an apparent assisted suicide in 2005.

Affidavit

He deposed to an affidavit in April last year, in which he states that it was in fact Agrizzi who attempted to hire him to recover money owed to him by Watson.

Schultz recounts how in March 2018, he received a phone call from a friend asking him if he knew Gavin Watson or a company called Bosasa. He had never heard of either of the two. A few days later, his friend came to his house and "told me that a certain Angelo Agrizzi wanted me to intimidate Gavin Watson" in order to "soften Gavin up and ensure that Gavin pays Angelo R10-million that was owed to Angelo". His friend told him that "Angelo would pay me a substantial amount for this service". Schultz says he told his friend that he was "not interested in getting involved with illegal transactions to intimidate people to pay others".

ALSO READ: Why Agrizzi is spilling the beans now

Agrizzi then allegedly requested a meeting with Schultz in April 2018, which he agreed to.

"While everyone was talking, Angelo started speaking to me privately. I mentioned to Angelo during this general discussion that I have a non-profitable orphanage in the East Rand. Angelo started explaining that he wanted me to intimidate or arrange that a certain Gavin Watson is seriously assaulted, as this would ensure that Gavin pays Angelo an amount of R10m that was due to Angelo as part of some sort of agreement.

"Angelo offered me 20% (R2-million) of the R10-million as payment upfront. Angelo went further and told me that he has several other business ventures where he will include me going forward if I agreed to his request. I told Angelo that I was not willing to get involved with any illegal transactions, specifically not to seriously assault or arrange that a person that I have never met is assaulted, that he can get R10-million. I also asked him not use my name again and not to contact me again."

Huge backlog could trigger new wave of shale oil

Published time: 21 Jan, 2019 08:57

The number of drilled but uncompleted wells (DUCs) in the US shale patch has skyrocketed by roughly 60 percent over the past two years.

That leaves a rather large backlog that could add a wave of new supply, even if the pace of drilling begins to slow.

The backlog of DUCs has continued to swell, essentially uninterrupted, for more than two years. The total number of DUCs hit 8,723 in November 2018, up 287 from a month earlier. That figure is also up sharply from the 5,271 from the same month in 2016, a 60 percent increase. The EIA will release new monthly DUC data on January 22, which will detail figures for December

Some level of DUCs is normal, but the ballooning number of uncompleted wells has repeatedly fueled speculation that a sudden rush of new supply might come if companies shift those wells into production. The latest crash in oil prices once again raises this prospect.

The calculus on completing wells can cut two ways. On the one hand, lower oil prices – despite the recent rebound, prices are still down sharply from a few months ago – can cause some E&Ps to want to hold off on drilling new wells. That may lead them to decide to complete wells they already drilled as a way of keeping production aloft while husbanding scarce resources. Companies that are posting losses may be desperate for revenues, so they may accelerate the rate of completions from their DUC backlog.

On the flip side, producers don’t exactly want to bring production online in a market that is subdued. “The lower oil price raises some questions about whether you go ahead with completing these wells,” Tom Petrie, head of oil and gas investment bank Petrie Partners, told S&P Global Platts. “Some companies want to get them in a producing mode; others say they won't get an adequate return right now, so they'll wait.”

Argentina and Spain scientific research on climate change impact on hake in Tierra del Fuego

Monday, January 21st 2019 - 08:57 UTC

Scientific study suggests snoek (Thyrsites atun) can re-colonize the marine area of the Beagle Channel and South-Western Atlantic waters, an area in the southernmost point of the South American continent where this species competed with the hake (Merluccius sp.) to hunt preys in warmer periods.

The conclusions open a new scenario in the prediction of potential changes that can affect trophic networks in this marine region –where the hake is a key species for industrial fisheries- due the effect of the rise of ocean temperatures due global change.

The new study is part of the ongoing doctoral thesis by the researcher Maria Bas, member of the Austral Center for Scientific Research (CADIC-CONICET, Argentina) and the Biodiversity Research Institute (IRBio) of the University of Barcelona, since it is co-supervised by the lecturer Lluís Cardona, from the Research Group on Large Marine Vertebrates of the Department of Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Environmental Sciences at the Faculty of Biology of the UB and IRBio, and by the expert Iván Briz (CADIC-CONICET, Argentina).

The snoek is a pelagic species from the family of Gempylidae, common in deep waters in the austral areas in South America, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. This species was exploited for about 6,000 years by aboriginal hunter gatherers of the area in the Beagle Channel, a tectonic bay that connects the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans in the southern area of South America, in sub-Antarctic latitudes. However, the fish disappeared in the area during the period known as Little Ice Age, a period of cooling dating from the late Middle Age until the eighteenth century.

According to the study, the potential temperature rise in the area could allow the snoek to re-colonize in a near future from the coasts in Chile, an area where the species is abundant. This would have a negative impact on the population of hake, its fishing and the regional economy because although the snoek is a species of fishing interest, its economic value is lower than the hake’s.

Isotopic ecology: reconstructing diets from the past.

The study, now published in the journal Global Change Biology, compares the current structure of the trophic network in the Beagle Channel to the one from the past, when temperatures were higher. To do so, experts analyzed zoo-archaeological remains of marine fauna which were found in Tierra del Fuego (Argentina) in sites of hunter-gatherer and fisher populations, who lived in the region about 10,000 years ago.

In particular, the studied records come from the archaeological site of Lanashuaia-II, located in the Beagle Channel, dated approximately 1,300 years AP (late Holocene, a warmer period than the current one).

The experts made an analysis of the stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes in bone samples of ancient and modern marine species in the Beagle Channel. The objective was to compare the structure of the trophic networks of the late and modern Holocene and predict potential changes caused by the rise of temperatures in shallow waters in the region. They also conducted complementary isotopic analyses on the shells of ancient and modern molluscs to explore the changes in the basal isotopic line and therefore compare the evolution of marine trophic networks over time.

The results of the study confirm a declining pattern in the marine primary productivity in the Beagle Channel during the late Holocene, as well as an isotopic overlap between the snoek and the hake in the past. Also, the exploitation of marine resources in southern South American coasts has altered the position of all those species that are intensely exploited by humans in the present and recent past in the trophic network, such as the South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis), the South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens), and the hake (Merluccius sp.).

The study also reveals the introduction of salmonids in rivers has altered the diet of imperial shags (Phalacrocorax atriceps), a species which is currently strictly marine in the region, but in the past it depended on native fish that migrated between rivers and estuaries to breed. (FIS and University of Barcelona).

Rohingya Muslim group fleeing India to Bangladesh stuck on 'zero line'

Serajul Quadir

3 MIN READ

DHAKA (Reuters) - Bangladesh has denied entry to 31 Rohingya Muslims trying to enter from India and they are stuck in no-man’s land on the border, Bangladesh authorities said on Monday, as India cracks down on members of the community.

FILE PHOTO: A man from the Rohingya community fills out an identification form, provided by local police, inside his shop at a camp in New Delhi, India October 4, 2018. REUTERS/Adnan Abidi/File Photo

The stranded Rohingya, including women and children, had been living in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, according to a Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) official who said he had seen some of their identity cards issued by the U.N. refugee agency in India.

The 31 had been stuck on Bangladesh’s border with northeast India since Friday, said the BGB commander in the area, Golam Kabir.

“We stopped them as they were crossing the border,” Kabir told Reuters by telephone.

“They’ve been on the zero line since the 18th of this month,” he said, referring to the border. Two rounds of talks on what to do with the 31, with India’s Border Security Force on Sunday, had “ended without any conclusive decision”, Kabir said.

Many hundreds of thousands of members of mostly Buddhist Myanmar’s Rohingya community have left their homes in Myanmar’s Rakhine Sate over the decades, most fleeing military crackdowns and discrimination.

Many have sought shelter in Bangladesh - where nearly 1 million live - but others have ended up in India, Southeast Asia and beyond.

An Indian border force officer in Tripura state told reporters on Sunday that they were providing food and clothing to the Rohingya, 16 of whom were children.

The force could not be reached for comment on Monday.

India estimates that 40,000 Rohingya are living in scattered settlements in various parts of the country.

But its Hindu nationalist government regards them as illegal aliens and a security threat, and has ordered that they be identified and repatriated.

The U.N. refugee agency, UNHCR, has issued about 16,500 Rohingya in India with identity cards that it says can help “prevent harassment, arbitrary arrests, detention and deportation”. India does not recognize the cards.

Hundreds of Rohingya families have left India for Bangladesh since seven Rohingya men were deported to Myanmar in October. This month, India sent a Rohingya family of five to Myanmar.

Protesters clash with police outside parliament during rally against Macedonia deal

The United Nations says conditions are not conducive for Rohingya to return to Myanmar.

In August, the United Nations accused the Myanmar military of mass killings and rapes of Rohingya with “genocidal intent” in a 2017 military operation that drove more than 700,000 of them into Bangladesh, according to U.N. agencies.

Myanmar has denied the accusations, saying its military launched a counter-insurgency operation after attacks on security posts by Muslim terrorists.

MOSCOW, January 21. /TASS/. Authorities of Russia’s Urals city of Magnitogorsk have warned citizens against panicking over terror alert emails, the city administration told reporters on Monday.

The regional branch of the Federal Security Service confirmed to TASS that spam had been sent. "In Magnitogorsk, spam with terror attacks alerts has been sent to email addresses. We are working jointly with competent authorities according to earlier approved schemes."

Earlier reports said law enforcement authorities in Magnitogorsk were checking reports that a terrorist attack could be carried out at city hospital number 1.

"There have been a growing number of cases of anonymous spam messages sent and their key goal is to destabilize the situation in the city and sow panic among citizens. All services in Magnitogorsk are reacting promptly checking all messages," the press service said. "We ask citizens not to give in to provocations and not to panic."

On December 31, 2018, a section of a ten-storey apartment block collapsed in Magnitogorsk, killing 23. As many as 18 people were rescued in the first hours after the collapse, another six were pulled out of the rubble alive later. Gas blast is believed to be main cause of the building collapse, the Russian Investigative Committee said. Investigators have found no traces of explosives at the site.

UK parliamentary committee urges MSC to review sustainable fishing standards

Monday, January 21st 2019 - 08:45 UTC

A UK parliamentary committee has called on the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) to address concerns about the organization's standard for sustainable fishing in the world's oceans. The House of Commons' Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) issued recommendations following its Sustainable Seas inquiry, whose findings were published last November.

The inquiry focused on how marine life can be protected from climate change, over fishing and pollution, and how the UK government can “create a sustainable blue economy”.

Among other recommendations, the committee urged the government to take urgent action to help create a legally binding ‘Paris Agreement for the Sea’, in order to protect the world’s oceans. It also suggested bringing forward the 2042 target date for achieving avoidable plastic waste.

The committee also noted the criticism recently directed toward the MSC, as regards how and which fisheries are certified as sustainable.

The EAC inquiry was supported by a campaign led by On the Hook and backed by scientists, retailers and non-governmental organizations, including Professor Callum Roberts from the Environment Department at the University of York, World Wise Foods (WWF), the Blue Marine Foundation and chef and TV personality Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.

Activists' criticisms of MSC standards are mainly directed at their evaluation unit, the need to take into account the carbon from ships and concerns about shark finning.

In order to ’ensure consumer confidence’ in MSC certification, the committee recommended the NGO ’addresses specific criticisms’ into the upcoming five-year review into its standards, and strengthen them accordingly. The review should be ’transparent and independently evaluated’, committee members warned.

“It is vital the MSC deals with incidences of shark finning in certified fisheries,” said committee member and On the Hook supporter Zac Goldsmith MP.

“They must provide up-to-date evidence that finning is not taking place and, when isolated incidents do occur, make appropriate sanctions. In line with the report’s recommendations, I look forward to the publication of data verifying the reduction of this practice in 2019,” he added.

Erin Priddle, director of the MSC program in UK, said the NGO took these concerns seriously, and that she hoped the review would reassure critics of the program’s rigor.

“While some claim the bar is too low, others warn that it is ‘becoming too high even for world leading fisheries’. This illustrates the challenge of a global standard: if the bar is raised too high, it risks preventing fisheries – such as small-scale and developing world fisheries – from ever reaching that bar,” Priddle explained. (FIS).

'Sitting ducks': Volunteer describes rescue at besieged Kenyan hotel

Hereward Holland

5 MIN READ

NAIROBI (Reuters) - As the sun set on an upmarket hotel complex in Nairobi, Serge Medic’s phone pinged with a message from his son: “Dad, are you OK?… Don’t do anything silly, please.”

FILE PHOTO: Serge Medic, the Swiss owner of a security company, helps to evacuate civilians at the scene where explosions and gunshots were heard at the Dusit hotel complex in Nairobi, Kenya January 15, 2019. Picture taken January 15, 2019. REUTERS/Thomas Mukoya/File Photo

Medic chuckled as he recounted the moment.

“It was 18:43. Too late.”

Three hours earlier, at least four gunmen and a suicide bomber had stormed 14 Riverside Drive, a leafy office, restaurant and hotel complex in the heart of Kenya’s capital, kicking off a 20-hour siege in which 21 people were killed.

At 3.39 p.m. (1339 GMT), Medic, the 56-year-old Swiss founder of a private security firm, was on his way home from work in a taxi when he saw injured people being carried along the side of the road.

At the same moment, a flurry of WhatsApp messages pinged on his phone from a group called “LFH (Licensed Firearm Holders) Kenya.”

“Seems to be an attack of some sort. Heavy explosions and gunfire,” one message read.

Medic turned the taxi around and headed towards the complex, a plush regional headquarters for international companies such as Colgate Palmolive, Dow Chemical and SAP.

As the car hit traffic, he grabbed his khaki emergency bag and ran the remaining 500 metres towards the billowing black smoke and the sound of gunfire.

“At the time, there was no thought about being a hero,” Medic told Reuters. “It was automatic.”

Entering the compound, he joined forces with two Kenyans in civilian clothes, each carrying a 9mm carbine and a shotgun.

Medic drew his pistol. The motley volunteers were the first rescuers on the scene.

At 3.59 p.m. they made their way past three burning cars and discovered the glass facade of I&M Bank riddled with bullet holes.

“Somewhere in my mind, I hoped that it was just a bank robbery gone wrong, because bank robbers, after all, are more reasonable people than terrorists,” he said.

KITCHEN KNIVES

Rounding the corner, they heard gunshots from the direction of the dusitD2 hotel and paused.

When the gunfire stopped, they moved slowly towards the hotel lobby, checking for ditches to dive into in case of a grenade attack. On the path they discovered a severed arm belonging to a suicide bomber who, half an hour earlier, had detonated his vest outside the Secret Garden restaurant.

“I remember vividly it had a shiny ring on one of the fingers,” Medic said.

As they walked over the shattered glass of the hotel’s front doors, Medic worried about a new threat: booby traps.

Then they came under fire from automatic weapons.

“We were sitting ducks,” Medic said.

He fired two shots as the group lay down suppressing fire and, one by one, ran back to their position behind the bank.

At 4.02 p.m. Medic sent a message to the group: “I’ve just been shot at in dusit.”

By now a mix of Kenyan security teams had arrived, along with several other armed civilians.

With the number and location of attackers still unknown, Medic joined a dozen maroon-bereted policemen in securing an adjacent office block, the Arlington building.

Taliban assault on Afghan military compound kills 12 troops, wounds 30

Mon Jan 21, 2019 08:55AM [Updated: Mon Jan 21, 2019 09:00A

At least a dozen of Afghan security forces have been killed and more than 30 others wounded in an assault by Taliban militants on a military base in the south.

Afghan provincial officials said the militants detonated an explosive-laden car at the base in the southern province of Maidan Wardak on Monday.

Two gunmen, who tried to enter the compound after the bombing, were shot dead, said Mohebullah Sharifzai, spokesman for the provincial governor.

“A (second) car, packed with explosives, was also discovered and defused,” he said.

A number of the wounded are in critical condition and were transferred to the capital, Kabul, according to Salem Asgherkhail, head of the area’s public health department.

Looking at the damage, the number of casualties may rise and our health team is still searching for victims,” he was quoted by Reuters as saying.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack through their spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid.

The assault followed an earlier attack on a convoy of security forces on Sunday, in the country’s eastern province of Logar, where the Taliban killed at least eight security forces and wounded several others.

The militants have stepped up attacks on security forces in recent months, though it has recently been engaged in talks with the US for finding a solution for the 17 year-old war in the country.

Taliban’s five-year rule over at least three quarters of Afghanistan came to an end in the wake of a US-led invasion in 2001, but the militant group still continues to flex its muscles against the government and the foreign troops remaining on Afghan soil……..

France holds trial over horse meat found in frozen lasagna

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PARIS — Jan 21, 2019, 4:05 AM ET

Email

Four people are going on trial in Paris over an elaborate alleged scheme that fed consumers across Europe frozen foods containing cheap horse meat fraudulently labeled as pricier beef.

The defendants at the trial starting Monday include two former executives of French company Spanghero, accused of various fraud charges. The executives deny intentional wrongdoing, according to French media reports.

Horse meat turned up in a dozen European countries in 2013 in frozen supermarket meals such as burgers and lasagna, and in school lunches and hospital meals. Investigators say Spanghero bought horse meat then mislabeled it as beef used in prepared foods.

The EU toughened food control rules as a result. Horse meat is not dangerous, but the scandal shocked consumers in places where such meat traditionally is not eaten.

First responder in Skripal poisoning turns out to be Britain’s most senior military nurse

Published time: 21 Jan, 2019 10:08

Colonel Alison McCourt. Photo from www.qarancassociation.org.uk

Sergei and Yulia Skripal were given first aid by the British Army’s most senior nurse, who just happened to be nearby, according to a new report – adding further intrigue to the highly controversial case.

The latest development in the Salisbury poisoning affair will fuel the claims of skeptics, who don’t believe the official British narrative. UK authorities have claimed that the former double agent and his daughter were targeted by the Russian government in a bizarre failed assassination plot involving a military-grade nerve agent.

It was previously reported by British media that the first person to provide medical assistance to the Skripals after they collapsed on a bench in Salisbury was “an off-duty nurse who had worked on the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone.”

However, the healthcare professional turned out to be not just any nurse. She was Colonel Alison McCourt, a veteran service member who currently holds the position of chief nursing officer in the British Army.

"This year, we need to fully make up our own plan of preparing and conducting launches. The next launch of the Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket will take place already in the summer and we undoubtedly must provide for it," Vostochny Space Center Director Valinur Agishev was quoted by the spaceport’s press office as saying.

Russian engineers will take part in the launches from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana while work will be continued to build the launch compound for the Angara carrier rocket and the basic work will be carried out further to provide for the continuous operation of the ground-based space infrastructure at the Vostochny spaceport, he noted.

The Vostochny Cosmodrome is the first Russian civilian spaceport. In April 2016, the first successful launch was conducted from the space center, with the delivery of three satellites into orbit.

The Vostochny Cosmodrome will provide for Russia’s full access to outer space and cut its dependence on the spaceport located in Kazakhstan.

It’s time for Plan B, as UK’s Theresa May battles to save Brexit

As the UK enters uncharted territory, critics of the PM believe her latest move exposes the secret plan she had right from the start.

Andrew Koubaridis@akoubaridis news.com.auJANUARY 21, 20199:46PM

Days after her Brexit plan was savagely rejected by MPs, Theresa May returns to parliament for round two in a desperate attempt to break the deadlock that has paralysed British politics.

It remains unclear whether she will be able to convince MPs - from her own Conservative Party or the opposition - to back her revised deal, which is expected to be a revamped version of the one that was so badly defeated last week.

Already some have come up with a conspiracy theory they believe is proof Mrs May is plotting to get her own way after all.

She is believed to be attempting to remove or amend the hated Irish backstop from her plan in a bid to win over MPs. The backstop is the insurance policy that would kick in at the end of a transition period in December 2020 if no trade deal had been agreed to.

The backstop avoids a hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland, but keeps the UK in a customs union with European Union they would not unilaterally be allowed to leave.

After a week of debate in the House of Commons, the revised plan will face a vote on January 29 and the prime minister hopes it will be passed, proving to the EU there is a mandate from parliament. At present the EU has essentially said the political mess Mrs May is in is one of the UK’s own making, and have urged the Brits to sort it out among themselves and then return with a coherent way forward……….

MOSCOW, January 21. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expects consistency in the dialogue with new UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen.

"We definitely highly value our cooperation in the Astana format and with the UN in promoting the political process in correspondence with [UN Security Council's] Resolution 2254. So, we hope for continuity and your working experience both in the structures of your homeland and in international organizations, including the UN," Lavrov said at a meeting with Pedersen on Monday.

The Russian minister especially noted the contribution to the work to implement Resolution 2254 made by former UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, highlighted that the joint efforts of the UN, Russia and the Middle East countries made it possible to achieve numerous results "on land" in Syria, including humanitarian issues.

U.S. calls on Russia to destroy new missile system

GENEVA (Reuters) - The United States called on Russia on Monday to destroy a new cruise missile system which it said constituted a “direct violation” of the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, and accused Moscow of destabilizing global security.

“Unfortunately, the United States increasingly finds that Russia cannot be trusted to comply with its arms control obligations and that its coercive and malign actions around the globe have increased tensions,” Robert Wood, U.S. disarmament ambassador, told the U.N.-sponsored Conference on Disarmament.

“Russia must verifiably destroy all SSC-8 missiles, launchers and associated equipment in order to come back into compliance with the INF Treaty,” he said, reiterating the Trump administration’s plan to withdraw from the 1987 pact in early February.

Germany sanctions Iranian airline over spying claims

For months now, European countries have called for concrete action against entities linked to Iranian intelligence. Mahan Air reportedly maintains close ties to an elite group of Iran's security services.

The German government on Monday imposed sanctions against Iranian airline Mahan Air in connection to Iran's illegal activities in Europe, including the discovery of a spy working as a translator for the country's armed forces .

Germany's Federal Aviation Office withdrew Mahan Air's operating permit in Germany with immediate effect.

A spokesperson for the Transport Ministry said the airline had been informed it had to suspend all connections in and out of Germany.

Mahan Air cargo flights to Syria and other war zones made teh move vital to "protect Germany's foreign and security policy interests," a Foreign Ministry spokesperson added.

For years, US authorities have accused Mahan Air of maintaining close ties to the elite Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. In 2011, the US Treasury designated Mahan Air a material supporter of terrorism for supporting the group.

A threat to Europe

Earlier this month, European authorities imposed punitive measures against Iran's Intelligence and Security Ministry for thwarted attacks and assassination attempts against Iranian opposition in France, Denmark, the Netherlands and other EU countries.

Iranian agents have been accused of attempting to bomb an opposition rally in Paris and assassinate Iranian Arab dissidents in Denmark and the Netherlands.

In July, Germany arrested and later deported an Iranian diplomat for providing a Belgian-Iranian couple with a bomb to commit the attack in Paris.

I once heard gw and ? aren't really married, she plays the role then goes home to her real husband when not on presidential duty. It may in some way, explain the phenomenon of the 'president's wives looking manly as first lady tho well done, because they need a handler with a firm grip we see and wife or the handler.
