Because, we think these cults of yore have disappeared and only zombie resurrections of their perverted child sacrificing (etc) ways exist today. If, however, the Dark Ages never happened, then these cults weren't ancient, they were quite recent and NEVER lost prominence among the elite of the world.
Who fabricated history? The Vatican. They stretched out the timeline to hide their "pagan" past. This would explain why so much occult and pagan symbology has been "adopted" by the Church. It was never adopted.
