Ham radio is a whole different animal. The moon is a whole lot bigger target. BTW the moon is actually the only "satellite" - what we commonly refer to as satellites are actually "spacecraft"

Why would anyone spend half a billion dollars on a communications satellite if all ya had to do is launch a big mirror into orbit?
