Premier League footballer Emiliano Sala was on a light aircraft which went missing over the Channel Islands, the French Civil Aviation authority said.
The Argentine striker was one of two people on board the Piper Malibu which lost contact off Alderney in the Channel Islands on Monday night.
Cardiff City signed the 28-year-old for a club-record £15m fee from French club Nantes on Saturday.
Guernsey Police said there was "no trace" of the Cardiff-bound aircraft.
Moscow court denies alleged US spy's bail request
Moscow (AFP) - A Moscow court on Tuesday denied bail to a US former Marine who was arrested in Russia on espionage charges last month.
Paul Whelan, 48, was taken into custody on December 28 by the Russian FSB security service, who said he was caught "while carrying out an act of espionage".

Singer Chris Brown arrested in France on suspicion of rape: police source
U.S. singer Chris Brown was arrested in Paris on Monday with two other people on suspicion of rape, a French police source.
The arrests were first reported by Closer magazine, which said Brown, his bodyguard and a friend were detained after a 24-year-old woman alleged she was raped at the singer's suite at the Mandarin Oriental hotel on the night of Jan. 15.

Aachen (Germany) (AFP) - France and Germany Tuesday signed a new friendship treaty to deepen their alliance at a time of crisis for the EU, drawing fire from the far right whom President Emmanuel Macron slapped down for "spreading lies" about the pact.
