Russian heavy bomber crash-lands in Arctic, killing 2

A Russian long-range bomber crash-landed in the Arctic Tuesday, killing two of its crew of four, the military said.

The Defense Ministry said that the Tu-22M3 bomber crashed Tuesday while landing in a blizzard in the Murmansk region north of the Arctic Circle. It said the plane hit the runway and broke up on impact.

The ministry said two crewmembers were killed while two others were hospitalized.

The bomber wasn’t carrying weapons, according to the ministry’s statement that was carried by Russian news agencies.

Military investigators have started the crash probe, and the Tupolev company that manufactured the bomber said its experts will join the investigation.

Aviation expert Vadim Lukashevich believed that the crash was likely caused by a vertical wind gust that suddenly hit the plane before touchdown, according to the RIA Novosti news agency.

Azerbaijan Laundromat by theOrganised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project or OCCRP.

But now journalists in Italy have suggested Hilux, which has been dissolved, may have connections to another Azerbaijani scandal, in Malta.

Islamic State group targets US convoy in northeast Syria

An Islamic State suicide bomber targeted a joint convoy of U.S. and allied Kurdish forces in northern Syria on Monday, marking the second attack against U.S. troops in less than a week and further highlighting the dangers surrounding U.S. plans to withdraw forces after a declaration that the extremist group had been defeated.

U.S. military Col. Sean Ryan said there were no casualties among the U.S.-led coalition members. He added: “We can confirm a combined U.S. and Syrian partner force convoy was involved” in the suicide bomb attack.

“We will continue to review the situation and provide updates as appropriate,” he added.

Monday’s bombing came days after a suicide attack killed 19 people, including two U.S. service members and two American civilians, in the northern Syrian town of Manbij. That bombing was the deadliest assault on U.S. troops in Syria since American forces moved into the country in 2015 and underscored the threat still posed by IS militants.

Canada blames US for Huawei CFO arrest backlash that left 2 citizens in Chinese prison and a 3rd on death row

Canada has blamed the US for the diplomatic fallout from the arrest of Chinese telcom giant Huawei's CFO, saying it is "paying the price" of Beijing's anger.

Since Canada detained Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's CFO and daughter of its founder, on December 1, two Canadians have been detained in China, and a third had a prison sentence upgraded to the death penalty.

Meng is suspected of violating US sanctions on Iran and of misleading banks and investors about a second company that was selling to Iran.

2 dealmakers named David: Uber and Lyft's expected IPOs will trigger competition at Google's in-house VC firms

The Google parent company has made major investments in both Uber and Lyft through its two investment arms, CapitalG and GV.

Both Uber and Lyft have reportedly filed confidentially to start the IPO process with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Uber is rumored to be weighing a $120 billion valuation, while Lyft could go public at a more modest $30 billion.

CapitalG and GV declined to disclose the value of its various investments, but it's clear from the rounds Alphabet participated in that the company has hundreds of millions — if not billions — wrapped up in both of the ridesharing companies.

Filipino Muslims vote in referendum on autonomous region

Muslims in the southern Philippines voted Monday in a referendum on a new autonomous region that seeks to end nearly half a century of unrest, in what their leaders are touting as the best alternative to a new wave of Islamic State group-inspired militants.

The vote caps a tumultuous peace effort by the government in Manila and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the main rebel group, to seal a deal that was signed in 2014 but languished in the Philippine Congress until it was finally approved last year. Bloodshed including the siege of Marawi city by IS-linked militants and other bombings and attacks in the south threatened to derail it.

Al Haj Murad Ebrahim, chairman of the Moro rebels, has repeatedly said that the creation of a viable Muslim autonomous region is the best antidote to about half a dozen smaller IS-linked radical groups that remain a threat in Mindanao, the homeland of minority Muslims in the largely Roman Catholic nation.

“We can roughly conclude that all these splinter groups are a result of the frustration with the peace process,” Murad said in July, when President Rodrigo Duterte signed the legislation creating the new region, called Bangsamoro

Palestinians to refuse remaining US aid for fear of lawsuits

BETHLEHEM, PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES: The Palestinian government will refuse all US government aid for fear of lawsuits, officials said Tuesday, throwing the future of security coordination and projects already under way into doubt.

Senior official Saeb Erekat confirmed US media reports that the Palestinians had demanded all funding stop at the end of the January for fear they would expose themselves to costly law suits under the US Anti Terrorism Clarification Act (ATCA) which is about to come into force.

“The government sent an official letter to the US administration requesting it stop all aid to the Palestinian Authority, including assistance to the Palestinian security services,“ Erekat told AFP.

He said the main reason for the move was the ATCA legislation, under which the financial aid provided by the US could be used as a means “for various groups to file lawsuits against the Palestinian Authority.”

US President Donald Trump had already pledged to cut almost all humanitarian aid to the Palestinians amid a dispute with president Mahmud Abbas, but projects were being phased out gradually.
