I think the military designates anyone who served during the time frame of the war as a Vietnam vet. IOW, I served during the Vietnam war is different than claiming I served in Vietnam or I fought in Vietnam.

Saying you served in country or fought when you didn't won't fly. Gore was in 'Nam, but as an REMF, and even he took shit for kind of insinuating he was a regular troop.
